Run wkhtmltoimage --format png --transparent input.html output.png. The --transparent option makes the renderer’s white background transparent in PNG output; it does not remove an opaque background deliberately painted by the page’s HTML or CSS.
Save the page as a transparent PNG
Use the PNG format explicitly and add --transparent before the input and output paths:
wkhtmltoimage --format png --transparent input.html output.pngReplace input.html with the path to your HTML file and output.png with the desired output path. The command-line option is described as making the background transparent in PNGs, and the settings reference specifies that it makes the white background transparent for PNG or SVG output. wkhtmltoimage settings reference · Debian wkhtmltoimage command-line parser, version 0.12.6-2
What the transparency option changes
The option applies to the renderer’s white background. It is not a tool for cutting a subject out of a photograph, deleting every color behind an object, or overriding an opaque background supplied as page content. The documented behavior concerns the renderer’s background, not arbitrary CSS-painted areas.

Check the HTML and CSS backgrounds
If the output still looks opaque, inspect the styles for html, body, and any page wrapper that covers the image. A white or colored CSS background is part of the rendered page; the option is not documented as removing it. This is a practical consequence of the option’s stated scope, rather than a guarantee about every stylesheet or renderer build.
Verify the saved PNG’s alpha
- Open the PNG in an image viewer that displays transparency, or place it over a contrasting background in an editor.
- Check both light and dark backgrounds. This makes it easier to distinguish transparent pixels from pixels that are actually white, black, or another color.
- If the expected areas remain opaque, review the page backgrounds and confirm that the output is PNG and the installed
wkhtmltoimageaccepts--transparent.
Transparency is apparent when the image is composited over another background, so a plain white viewer canvas can make transparent white-looking areas difficult to identify. PNG specification

Troubleshoot noise in transparent output
The wkhtmltoimage issue tracker contains individual reports of random noise pixels in transparent PNGs. One report, opened February 26, 2019, discusses a proposed source-level remedy: initializing the image buffer with transparent pixels. The archived issue does not establish that every released binary includes that change, so do not assume the proposed fix is present in your package. wkhtmltopdf issue #4267 · wkhtmltopdf issue #2629
- Compare the PNG over both light and dark backgrounds to determine whether the pixels are noise or page content.
- Check which exact renderer build produced the file; reports of noise do not establish that all versions have the same behavior.
- Do not assume every dark or colored edge is the same problem. The cited issue reports concern random noise and do not diagnose all halos or fringes.
The available issue reports are examples, not a measured reliability rate or proof that every wkhtmltoimage build is affected.
