A download cannot restore detail that was removed when a photo was resized or compressed. If the only copy is a reduced version, you need the original from the camera, phone, editor, or sender.
What “high resolution” means when you save a photo
For a digital image, resolution is primarily its pixel dimensions—for example, 4,032 × 3,024 pixels. A larger pixel count can preserve more detail when you crop or print, but it does not automatically mean the image looks better. JPEG compression, resizing, sharpening, and the original camera capture also affect quality.
File size is a useful clue, not proof. A high-resolution JPEG may be smaller than a low-resolution PNG, while a photo that looks large on screen may still have modest pixel dimensions. Check the dimensions of the saved file and compare them with the source item’s details.
The important limitation
If a service has already compressed a photo or resized a photo above 16 megapixels to 16 megapixels, downloading it again does not recreate the discarded information. You must locate the original capture or an earlier uncompressed export.

Before downloading: find the best source
- Prefer the camera or phone original. Check the device’s Photos, Files, DCIM, or recently deleted folders.
- Check the cloud item’s backup details. A service may show whether the stored file is original, compressed, or resized.
- Avoid previews and screenshots. A browser preview, thumbnail, or screenshot is usually a new, reduced copy rather than the uploaded file.
- Use the service’s Download or Export command. Do not rely on right-clicking a preview or copying an image from a message.
Google Photos: preserve original quality
Google Photos distinguishes Original quality from Storage saver. Original quality stores photos and videos at the resolution captured, with no quality change, and uses Google Account storage. Storage saver compresses photos; photos above 16 MP are resized to 16 MP. Some files may not be eligible for compression and can remain at their original file size.
Set Original quality on Android
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile image.
- Open Photos settings > Backup > Photos & videos quality.
- Select Original quality.
Set it on iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Photos and tap your profile image.
- Choose Google Photos settings and then Backup.
- Open the photo and video quality setting.
- Select Original quality.
This setting affects future backups. It cannot upgrade items that were already stored as reduced copies. Google says each account includes up to 15 GB of storage; Original quality uses that allowance more quickly than Storage saver.
Download from Google Photos on a computer
- Open photos.google.com and sign in.
- Select the photo.
- Choose More > Download.
- Save the downloaded file to a folder you control. For a large collection, download in manageable groups and keep the original filenames when possible.
On a selected photo, swipe up on a phone to view its details. Compare the listed dimensions and backup information with the local file after downloading.
iCloud Photos: choose the correct download version
iCloud.com offers three download choices. They serve different purposes:

Do not treat Most Compatible JPEG as the unmodified original. It is a compatibility export.
Download selected items from iCloud.com
- Go to iCloud.com/photos and sign in.
- Select one or more photos.
- Open More Download Options (or choose Download).
- Select Unmodified Originals, Highest Resolution, or Most Compatible.
- Confirm the download and check the resulting files.
Apple’s iCloud.com flow allows up to 1,000 items at a time. On a Mac, enable the option to download originals for the library when you need a full-resolution local copy. Apple describes this as downloading the library in full resolution.
How to verify that the saved photo is high resolution
Check pixel dimensions
On Windows, right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Details. On macOS, select the file in Finder and press Command-I; Preview also shows image dimensions under its inspector. On iPhone or iPad, open the item in Photos and swipe up. Android gallery apps commonly show dimensions under Details or Info.
Record the width and height, then compare them with the source item. A 4,032 × 3,024 file has about 12.2 million pixels; a 1,920 × 1,080 file has about 2.1 million. The second may look sharp on a phone but contains much less image information.

Check the format and metadata
HEIC, JPEG, PNG, and RAW are not interchangeable. HEIC can retain high quality efficiently, while JPEG is widely compatible but lossy. RAW files preserve camera data for editing but require compatible software. Conversion can change the format and metadata even when dimensions remain the same.
Open the file at 100 percent
A fit-to-window preview can hide softness. View the downloaded image at 100 percent and inspect fine text, hair, foliage, and edges. If those details are blurred and the dimensions are smaller than the source, you likely saved a reduced copy.
When the downloaded photo looks soft or small
- The source was already reduced: Find the camera original or ask the sender to export it again at full size.
- You selected a compatibility option: Repeat the download with Unmodified Originals or Original quality.
- You saved a preview: Return to the library item and use its Download command.
- The browser changed the file: Try the service’s desktop app or another supported browser, then compare dimensions.
- The image was edited: Export from the editor at its maximum pixel dimensions and an appropriate quality setting.
- The file is incomplete: Check that the download finished and that the archive or transfer was extracted without errors.
Protect your originals after downloading
Keep at least two copies in separate locations. A practical arrangement is the phone or computer copy plus an external SSD, with another copy in a cloud service. An SSD stores the file; it does not increase resolution. Use clear folders, preserve original filenames, and avoid repeatedly opening and re-saving JPEGs in an editor because each lossy save can introduce additional artifacts.
Saving a high-resolution image from a web page
If the image belongs to you, first look for the site’s original download control. A displayed web image may be a resized derivative, and a browser screenshot captures the rendered viewport rather than the source file. If you need a faithful capture of a page or a specific element, a screenshot API can automate the browser step.

- Original-quality cloud backup: best when you need recovery and access across devices, but it consumes more storage.
- Local download: gives you control and works offline, but you must maintain backups.
- Compatibility export: easiest to open on many systems, but it may convert the original format.
- Automated page capture: useful for repeatable web records, not a substitute for downloading an original photo asset.
For important images, verify one sample before downloading an entire library. Confirm dimensions, format, metadata requirements, and available storage first.

Can I make a low-resolution photo high resolution by saving it again?
No. Saving creates another copy; it cannot reconstruct detail removed by resizing or compression.

Is PNG always higher quality than JPEG?
No. Format choice and source data matter. PNG is lossless for supported image data, while JPEG is lossy but often much smaller.
Should I choose Highest Resolution or Unmodified Originals in iCloud?
Choose Unmodified Originals when you require the captured or imported file. Choose Highest Resolution when you want the best-quality device version, and Most Compatible only when compatibility is the priority.
The Bottom Line
Keep the original, select Original quality or Unmodified Originals, and verify the downloaded dimensions. If the source was already compressed or resized, obtain the original rather than downloading the reduced copy again.
