For printing, match the image’s pixel dimensions and print size to the printer or lab’s specifications; changing the PPI number alone does not add detail.
What “high resolution” means for a JPG
There is no single pixel size or JPEG quality setting that makes every image “high resolution.” The right export depends on where the image will go, the detail in the original, and any size or format limits set by a website, app, printer, or photo lab.
For screens, check pixel dimensions and upload limits
Pixel dimensions are the image’s width and height in pixels. They determine how much image data is available for a screen display or later resizing. Adobe uses 3000 × 2000 pixels—6 million pixels—as an explanatory example, not as a minimum quality threshold. If you export at fewer pixels than your destination needs, the image may look soft when enlarged. If a platform imposes a maximum dimension or file size, follow that limit rather than exporting a larger file that it will reject or resize.
For prints, connect pixels to physical size
PPI means pixels per inch: it describes how densely the existing pixels are placed across a printed image. With the same pixel dimensions, a different PPI changes the calculated physical print size; it does not create image detail. To choose an export size, start with the print’s requested physical dimensions and the printer or lab’s specifications. Adobe’s Lightroom Classic documentation says 180–480 ppi is suitable for inkjet output, but that is Adobe guidance, not a universal requirement. Adobe advises checking with the service provider for offset or lab prints.

JPEG quality trades file size for compression
JPEG is a lossy format. Adobe’s Lightroom Classic documentation describes it this way: “JPEG uses lossy compression, discarding data to make a file smaller.” Higher quality settings generally preserve more image information while producing larger files, but setting scales vary between applications. A quality value in one editor does not necessarily match the same value in another.
Before exporting: check the source and destination
- Find the destination’s requirements. For a website or upload form, check accepted formats, maximum file size, and pixel-dimension limits. For a print, ask the provider for its preferred dimensions, format, and PPI guidance.
- Inspect the original dimensions. Work from the largest suitable source image available. If the original is already too small for the intended display or print, exporting it at larger dimensions cannot restore missing detail.
- Decide whether to resize. Export at the original pixel dimensions unless the destination needs a specific size or a smaller file. Keep the aspect ratio constrained unless the required crop or shape calls for a change.
- Plan for compression. If there is a file-size cap, export a JPG and adjust quality until the file fits while still looking acceptable at its intended viewing size.
Save a high-resolution JPG in Photoshop
- Open the image and choose Image > Image Size. Review its width and height in pixels.
- Keep the aspect ratio constrained when changing dimensions, unless the destination specifically requires a different crop or shape.
- If the image is for print, set the intended physical size and use the print provider’s resolution requirements. Remember that pixel dimensions, PPI, and calculated print size are related; changing PPI alone does not add pixels.
- Export or save a JPEG using Photoshop’s output options. Adobe’s Photoshop educational tutorial describes export controls for format and dimensions, but its example settings are not a universal quality prescription.
- Check the saved file’s dimensions and file size. View it at the expected screen or print size to judge whether the result is suitable.
Adobe’s Photoshop documentation cautions that “Upsampling can’t add detail that wasn’t in the original image.” Enlarging a small source may produce a larger file, but it does not recover detail that was never captured.
Export a high-resolution JPG in Lightroom Classic
- Select the photo and choose File > Export.
- Under File Settings, select JPEG, choose a color space appropriate for the destination, and set quality. JPEG compression is lossy, so balance appearance against file size.
- Under Image Sizing, decide whether to resize. If the destination needs the full available image, do not accidentally enable a smaller output size. For print, use the provider’s PPI guidance.
- Optionally set output sharpening for screen, matte paper, or glossy paper. Sharpening does not replace suitable source dimensions.
- Export, then inspect the resulting dimensions, file size, and appearance at the expected display or print size.
Adobe’s Lightroom Classic documentation lists 180–480 ppi as suitable for inkjet output and 65,000 pixels as the maximum exported long edge in that application. These are Lightroom-specific documentation figures, not general standards for all software or destinations.

Export a JPG in GIMP
- Open the image and use GIMP’s JPEG export workflow, choosing the option to export the image as JPEG.
- Set the JPEG quality in the export dialog. GIMP’s quality scale is not necessarily comparable with another application’s scale.
- Save the file, then check its dimensions and appearance. If file size matters, compare the exported size with the destination’s limit.
GIMP 3.2 documentation says quality values above 95, or even 90, are rarely useful and can greatly increase file size. Treat this as GIMP-specific guidance, not a recommended universal setting for every image or JPEG encoder.

Common problems and how to fix them
The exported JPG is smaller than the original
Check the export dialog’s image-sizing or resize controls. Disable unintended resizing or enter the destination’s required pixel dimensions. Also verify that you opened the full-size source rather than a preview or smaller copy.
The file has a large PPI value but still looks soft
PPI is not a substitute for pixel dimensions. Check the image’s actual width and height in pixels and compare them with the intended display or print size. A high PPI value attached to a small image does not create new detail.

The image looks worse after export
JPEG compression discards image data. Export again at a higher quality setting, if the destination’s file-size limit allows it, and avoid repeatedly opening and re-saving the same JPEG. If the source is already low resolution or blurry, use a better original if available rather than enlarging it and expecting lost detail to return.
The JPG is too large to upload
First confirm the platform’s exact maximum file size and pixel dimensions. If the dimensions exceed what the destination needs, resize while preserving the aspect ratio. If the dimensions are appropriate, lower the JPEG quality in small increments and inspect the result. Do not reduce dimensions or quality more than necessary.

The print size or result differs from what you expected
Confirm the exported pixel dimensions, the intended physical size, and the printer’s requirements. Changing PPI changes the calculated print size when pixel dimensions stay fixed; it does not add image information. Ask the print provider which specifications it expects for that product and process.

One application’s quality number does not match another’s
Quality scales are application-specific and may use different encoders or mappings. Judge the exported file by its appearance and size at the intended use, not by assuming that the same numeric setting is equivalent across programs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save a JPG without losing quality?
JPEG is lossy, so a JPEG export can discard image data. If avoiding that loss is essential, keep an original in a lossless format and export a JPEG copy for destinations that require it.
Should I use 300 PPI for every image?
No. Use the print provider’s specifications. PPI relates pixel dimensions to physical print size; changing it alone does not increase image detail.
Does a higher JPEG quality number always mean better quality?
Within a particular export workflow, a higher setting generally favors image quality over file size. Numeric scales differ among applications, so compare the saved file rather than assuming settings are interchangeable.
