Its screenshot tool downloads a full-page PNG image, while the documented PDF workflow is File/menu → Print… → Save to PDF. Printing creates a paginated print rendering, so it may not look identical to the on-screen page or to a screenshot.
This guide explains both choices, how to control the PDF layout, and what to do when you specifically need the screenshot image inside a PDF.
Choose the output you actually need

Mozilla documents these as separate features. A PDF made through Print is not an export of the PNG; Firefox prints the web page again using print styles and pagination. Read the preview before saving, especially for pages with responsive layouts, advertisements, fixed headers, or interactive content.
Save the web page as a PDF in Firefox

Open the page you want to preserve in Firefox.

Open the Firefox menu (the three-line button) and choose Print…. Depending on your operating system and window layout, Print may also be available from the File menu or with Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+P (macOS).

In the print preview, open Destination and select Save to PDF.

Check the preview and adjust the available settings:
- Orientation: portrait generally suits articles; landscape can prevent wide tables from being squeezed.
- Pages: print all pages or enter a page range.
- Paper size: choose the paper standard required by the recipient or printer.
- Scale: reduce it when content is clipped; increasing it can create more pages.
- Margins: change the whitespace around the printed content.
- Format: use the normal or simplified format when offered. Simplified format can remove page elements; Mozilla notes that print backgrounds cannot be selected when Simplified is selected.
- Headers and footers: turn them off if you do not want the URL, title, date, or page numbers added.
- Background graphics: enable this when color blocks or background images are essential. The option may depend on the page or environment.

Select Print, choose a filename and folder if Firefox asks, and save the PDF.
Mozilla’s documented wording is “Select Save to PDF in the drop-down menu to save the shown preview as a PDF file.” See Mozilla’s Firefox printing instructions for the current print-panel labels.
Capture the entire page as an image
Use this route when visual fidelity to the browser view matters more than pagination.

Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. The documented shortcuts are Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux and Command+Shift+S on macOS.

In the screenshot toolbar, select Save full page (Mozilla also describes this as “Capture the full page”). Firefox expands the selection to include the page below the viewport.

Select Download. Firefox downloads the result as a PNG image, normally to the browser’s default download folder.

Why the PDF and screenshot can look different
Print CSS changes the layout
Websites can supply a separate print stylesheet. Navigation, cookie notices, sidebars, animations, video players, and advertisements may be hidden or rearranged. A responsive page can also select a different width for the paper preview.

PDFs paginate; screenshots do not
A full-page PNG is one continuous image. A PDF divides content across sheets and may place a heading at the bottom of one page, repeat a table header, or insert a page break. Use the preview to catch awkward breaks.
Backgrounds and interactive state are conditional
Background colors and images require the background-printing option, and some environments do not expose every setting. A PDF records the rendered print state, not a live form, scrolling position, video, or hover interaction.

Firefox’s documented screenshot and print help does not describe a built-in step that takes the already downloaded PNG and embeds it into a PDF. Do not assume that choosing Save to PDF converts the PNG; it prints the source page instead.
A practical, operating-system-dependent workaround is to download the full-page PNG, open it in an installed image viewer or document editor, and use that application’s Export/Print to PDF command. The exact labels and image scaling vary by Windows, macOS, Linux distribution, and installed software, so verify that the resulting PDF contains the image rather than the original web page. If the recipient needs selectable text, links, or accessible structure, use Firefox’s Print route instead; an image-only PDF will not provide those features.
Settings that improve a saved PDF
- Use portrait for ordinary article pages and landscape for wide dashboards or code listings.
- Reduce scale only enough to prevent clipping; very small scale harms readability.
- Disable headers and footers for a clean handout, or keep page numbers when the PDF will be printed.
- Enable backgrounds when branding or contrast depends on them.
- Try Simplified format for a text-focused document, but remember that it removes the ability to select print backgrounds.
- Check page ranges before saving; a prior range can cause missing pages.
- After saving, open the PDF in a viewer and inspect the first, middle, and last pages.
Troubleshooting
There is no Take Screenshot command
Right-click an empty part of the page rather than a link, image, or form control. You can also use the documented keyboard shortcut. Context-menu entries can be affected by the page and Firefox configuration; reload the page and try the shortcut.

The full-page option is missing
Open the screenshot tool first and look for Save full page in its toolbar. If the page is still loading, wait for content to settle and try again. Very unusual documents or browser UI pages may not expose the same capture controls as ordinary websites.
The PDF is blank or missing colors
Inspect the preview before printing. Turn on background printing when available, and switch away from Simplified format if backgrounds are required. If the page uses content that appears only after interaction, trigger that state before opening Print.
Content is cut off
Try a different orientation, a smaller scale, or wider margins. For a wide table, landscape is usually preferable. Confirm that the preview itself contains the content; a missing item in preview will not appear in the saved PDF.
The PDF has unexpected extra pages
Print styles, margins, and scale determine pagination. Adjust those settings and review page breaks in preview. A full-page screenshot will not have this pagination, but it will be an image rather than a document.
Save Page As does not offer PDF
That is expected. Mozilla’s page-saving documentation lists complete webpage, HTML-only, text, and related formats, not PDF. Use Print → Save to PDF.

Which method should you use?
- Choose Print → Save to PDF for a conventional, searchable, paginated document.
- Choose Save full page for a continuous visual record in PNG format.
- Use an image-to-PDF application only when the PNG itself must be packaged as a PDF.
