To save a webpage as one self-contained file with SingleFile, let the page finish loading and click the SingleFile toolbar button. To keep the file manageable on a low-storage laptop, first enable HTML compression, duplicate-image removal, and alternative-font removal; remove frames or hidden elements only if you can do without their content. SingleFile normally saves to your browser’s Downloads folder, but its Companion can direct files to another local folder, including one on an external drive.

What SingleFile saves—and what “complete” means

SingleFile is a browser extension that packages a webpage and its resources into one HTML file. The saved file can include images, stylesheets, frames, fonts, and other resources, including ones that are not visible or cached when you first look at the page. That is why a complete page can be much larger than a text-only copy. The extension works in your browser by default, according to the SingleFile project.

A saved page is not necessarily an offline copy of every behavior on the original site. The SingleFile FAQ says scripts are removed by default because they can affect rendering and may not work offline. Maps, carousels, menus, and other interactive features may therefore look different or stop working. SingleFile also cautions that it is not a professional web-archiving tool, particularly for academic work; it describes WARC-based tools as the preference for that use.

Save a page and reduce its size

  1. Wait for the page to finish loading. If the site loads images or other content as you scroll, visit the areas you want included first. SingleFile can also load deferred content, but this takes longer and is best-effort.
  2. Set the size options before saving. Open SingleFile’s options and enable HTML compression, removal of duplicate images, and removal of alternative fonts. These are the least intrusive documented ways to reduce file size, though results depend on the page.
  3. Decide whether to remove content. Removing frames or iframes can considerably reduce size and save time, but deletes their content from the saved page. Removing hidden elements can also reduce size, but may increase CPU use and processing time. Leave these options off if you need those elements.
  4. Capture the page. Click the SingleFile toolbar button and wait for processing and the browser download to finish. If you use a ZIP-based output format, disabling ZIP compression can reduce CPU use or save time, but makes the result larger; it is not a storage-saving option.
  5. Open the saved HTML file. Check that the text, images, and embedded content you need are present. This is especially important if you removed frames or changed deferred-content settings.

SingleFile’s documentation does not give a typical or guaranteed percentage reduction for these options. The result depends on each page’s images, fonts, frames, and markup; there is no reliable file-size target to assume in advance.

Choose a save location that has room

Use the browser’s Downloads folder

By default, SingleFile saves to the download folder configured in your browser. If that folder is on a drive with enough space, no additional setup is needed. The exact browser setting for the download location varies by browser and version.

Use another local folder or an external drive

SingleFile Companion supports saving to a different directory instead of the browser’s Downloads folder. Its repository documents a configurable savePath; consult the SingleFile Companion documentation for setup details. If you already have an external drive, you can choose a folder on it as the destination. A new drive is not required: the built-in size options are the first thing to try.

Balance file size, completeness, and speed

Choice What it can do Trade-off
Compress HTML Removes comments and unnecessary markup, spaces, quotes, and whitespace. Documented as reducing size without altering the document.
Remove duplicate images Avoids saving repeated copies of the same image. Can considerably reduce size when a page reuses images.
Remove alternative fonts Keeps the fonts in use and removes alternatives. Can considerably reduce size; the result depends on the page’s fonts.
Remove hidden elements Can reduce saved content that is not visible. May increase CPU use and processing time; content may be removed.
Remove frames and iframes Can reduce file size and save time. Frame content will not be in the saved page.
Load deferred content May capture resources that have not yet been displayed. Takes longer and is best-effort, not guaranteed.
Disable ZIP compression Can reduce CPU use or processing time for ZIP-based output. Increases the resulting file size.

When processing is slow, the SingleFile FAQ says some options can be disabled to save time or reduce CPU use, but doing so can leave images or frames out. For a low-storage laptop, avoid trading away needed content without checking the saved page.

Troubleshoot missing content, large files, or failed saves

  • The file is larger than expected: complete captures can include off-screen, uncached, or deferred resources. Enable compression and duplicate-image and alternative-font removal; remove frames only if you do not need their contents.
  • An image, font, or embedded item is missing: the resource may not have loaded, may require a request header SingleFile cannot retrieve, or may be deferred. Let the page load, inspect the relevant area before saving, and try loading deferred content. Some browser-restricted domains cannot be processed.
  • The save takes too long or uses substantial CPU: capturing additional resources takes time. Consider disabling resource-processing options, understanding that images or frames may then be omitted.
  • The page opens but controls do not work: scripts are removed by default, so interactive elements may not behave as they do online. The saved HTML is useful for viewing captured content, not necessarily reproducing the live site.
  • The download cannot complete because the drive is full: free space or change the browser’s download folder, or configure SingleFile Companion to use another directory. Then save again and open the resulting file to verify it.
  • The extension will not capture the page: browser-restricted domains are a documented limitation. Check whether the current browser and platform are supported and whether the page is on a restricted domain; supported browser availability can vary by store and platform.

Privacy and archive limitations

The SingleFile FAQ says processing is local by default and that SingleFile does not upload data to third-party servers. Optional cloud and other destinations are separate settings, so review the selected destination before enabling one. A single-file capture is also not a preservation-grade web archive; for professional or academic archiving, SingleFile itself points readers toward tools based on the WARC specification.

If you need a screenshot rather than a downloadable self-contained HTML page, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API returns an image or PDF from one GET request; that is a different output from SingleFile’s HTML file. For example, save a WebP screenshot of a page with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
