To sand wood smoothly with a Ryobi sander, first match the abrasive to your exact model and pad, then work in controlled passes while managing dust and checking the surface as you go. Ryobi’s A21701 5-inch hook-and-loop assortment labels 80 grit for stripping, 120 grit for smoothing, and 220 grit for finishing; those are the manufacturer’s use labels, not a required sequence for every project. Check your sander’s manual before choosing discs or connecting dust collection.
Identify your Ryobi model and pad before you start
Ryobi makes different sanders and product configurations. The examples below are 5-inch random-orbit sanders, but that does not mean every Ryobi sander takes the same size disc. Find the model number on your tool and check its manual or product page for pad diameter, abrasive attachment, and dust-collection setup.
- The PCL406B is an 18V ONE+ 5-inch random-orbit sander with a hook-and-loop pad and a listed speed of 10,000 OPM. Its listing specifies dust ports for 1-1/4-inch and 1-7/8-inch hoses; battery and charger are sold separately. Ryobi PCL406B product page.
- The PBLSD01B is an HP brushless 5-inch random-orbit sander with a hook-and-loop system, dust bag, and three speed settings from 7,000 to 11,000 OPM. Ryobi lists compatibility with 1-1/4-inch or 1-7/8-inch wet/dry-vacuum hoses. Ryobi PBLSD01B product page.
These model details are examples, not universal instructions. Use the manual for your own tool to confirm the pad, settings, and connection method.
Choose an abrasive that fits the job and pad
Match the disc diameter, backing type, and hole pattern to your sander. A disc that does not fit securely or align with the pad’s dust holes may not work as intended. Ryobi’s A21701 is one documented option: a 5-inch, hook-and-loop assortment for wood. Ryobi labels its grits as follows: Ryobi A21701 assortment.

Those labels describe Ryobi’s assortment; they do not establish a mandatory progression for every wood species, starting surface, or planned finish. Choose based on the work in front of you, follow the abrasive and finish makers’ guidance where applicable, and inspect the result before moving to a finer grit.
Sand in controlled passes and inspect the surface
- Prepare the workpiece. Secure the wood so it cannot shift, and clear the area of loose objects. Refer to your manual for safe handling and operating instructions.
- Fit the disc. With the sander stopped, attach the correctly sized abrasive to the pad and align any dust holes. Make sure the disc is seated evenly and securely.
- Set up dust collection. Use the dust bag or a compatible hose connection as specified for your model. Do not assume a hose size or port arrangement from another Ryobi sander will fit yours.
- Sand and check often. Keep the pad moving in controlled passes rather than holding it in one spot. The exact movement and speed depend on the tool, material, and task; the cited Ryobi product pages do not prescribe a universal technique. Stop periodically, remove dust, and inspect the surface in good light before deciding whether to continue or change grit.
- Finish deliberately. When the surface meets your needs, stop the tool and remove dust from the work area before applying a finish. Follow the coating maker’s surface-preparation directions.
Control dust and keep hands clear
Wood sanding creates fine airborne dust. OSHA’s woodworking guidance says, “Sanders produce a considerable quantity of fine wood dust,” and advises that “All sanders should be well ventilated.” Its handheld orbital-sander guidance also identifies contact with the abrasive surface as a hazard that can cause abrasions and lacerations. Use ventilation and dust collection appropriate to the tool and workspace, and avoid breathing sanding dust. NIOSH’s 1996 publication describes a tested additional-exhaust system with a slotted sanding pad that reduced emissions by approximately 90 percent compared with an aspirator-controlled sander. That result belongs to the specific tested system; it is not a performance claim for an ordinary dust bag or consumer vacuum attachment.
