Safest option: remove the heavy graphics card, pack it separately in a sturdy, well-cushioned box, and transport the PC chassis without it. ASUS recommends separate packing to reduce the risk of the card being damaged inside the chassis during transit. If removal is not practical, handle the PC carefully; an in-case support holder is not established as a substitute for removing the card.
Should you remove your GPU before moving your PC?
Yes, if you can remove it safely. ASUS Support recommends taking a heavier graphics card out and packing it separately before transporting the computer, to help prevent damage to the card within the chassis. Follow the removal instructions for your exact graphics card, PC, and motherboard. Shut down the computer and disconnect its power cable before handling or removing the card.
If you cannot remove it confidently, do not improvise with the hardware. Handle the chassis carefully and consider asking a qualified technician to remove and reinstall the card. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that transporting a heavy card installed in the chassis is safe under any particular conditions.
How to pack a graphics card for shipping or transport
ASUS’s packaging instructions are for service shipments; treat them as the manufacturer’s packing guidance, not as a guarantee for every carrier or type of move.

- Choose a sturdy carton. ASUS recommends a suitable corrugated box; for high-end, heavy graphics cards it recommends double- or triple-layer corrugated cardboard.
- Cushion the card from the bottom. Put foam, bubble cushioning, or other suitable padding beneath it, thick enough to support its weight. ASUS specifies approximately 6 cm of clearance between the card and the box’s inner walls or corners. This is packaging guidance, not a safety guarantee.
- Wrap and protect the card. Wrap it and add protection around the PCB and components, including the bracket. Avoid letting the card press directly against the box walls.
- Immobilize it. Fill the gaps around and above the card so it cannot shift inside the carton. Make sure the bottom padding supports it rather than leaving it suspended or able to move.
- Seal the carton. Use wide packing tape over the top and bottom seams. ASUS warns against shipping a graphics card in a delivery bag without a protective box.
If the graphics card must stay installed
Move the chassis carefully and avoid rough handling. ASUS describes a graphics-card holder as in-case support intended to help prevent sagging or bending from the card’s weight; whether one is included varies by graphics-card model. That guidance concerns support in the case, not protection during transport. ASUS does not establish an internal holder or expanding packing foam as an equivalent alternative to removing and separately packing a heavy card.
What the guidance does not establish
The cited ASUS instructions do not set a universal safe orientation for transporting the PC, specify how to secure foam inside an assembled computer, or prescribe a carrier, insurance level, temperature-acclimation period, or safe weight threshold for leaving a card installed. Do not treat the approximately 6 cm carton clearance as a tested safety guarantee or as a substitute for cushioning and preventing movement.
