You can reduce the risk of connecting an AI assistant to your inbox by granting only the permissions its task needs, starting with read-only access when possible, and requiring your review before it sends or changes messages. Treat email as untrusted input: a message can contain instructions designed to manipulate an assistant that reads it.
What can go wrong when an AI reads email?
An email can carry text intended to mislead an assistant into ignoring its instructions or taking an unsafe action. This is a form of prompt injection: the risky instructions arrive inside content the assistant is asked to process, rather than directly from you. OpenAI describes the risk in its prompt-injection guidance; Google also discusses malicious email content in its Gemini safety guidance and warns that hidden instructions in email or documents can hijack a session when using Workspace MCP.
Safeguards may warn about suspicious content, omit it, or refuse a request, but they do not guarantee that every malicious message will be recognized. The practical protection is to limit what the assistant can access and do, and to review consequential actions yourself.
Should you give AI access to your Gmail?
Only if the feature is useful to you and the requested permissions fit the job. Google’s Secure AI Framework recommends least privilege for agents: allow only the tools and actions they need. Gmail’s permission scopes illustrate why that distinction matters:

| Gmail scope | What it allows | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
gmail.metadata |
Access to message metadata such as labels and headers, not message bodies. | When the task needs message details such as headers or labels, but not the email text. |
gmail.readonly |
View email messages and settings; Google classifies this scope as restricted. | When the assistant needs to read or summarize message content but should not make changes. |
gmail.compose |
Manage drafts and send emails; Google classifies this scope as restricted. | When drafting or sending is an actual feature you intend to use. |
gmail.modify |
Read, compose, and send email; it does not permit immediate permanent deletion that bypasses Trash. | When the requested workflow needs these broader capabilities. |
mail.google.com |
Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all Gmail. | Google says to request this only if immediate, permanent deletion is required; other actions can use less permissive scopes. |
These definitions are from Google’s Gmail API scope reference. A connector may request several scopes, and scope availability or classification can change. Check the current consent screen and provider documentation rather than relying on a broad “secure” or “read-only” label. These Gmail scope names do not describe Outlook or Microsoft 365 permissions.
Google’s OAuth policy tells app developers to request “the smallest set of scopes that are necessary” for the functionality a user chose. It also says production apps using sensitive or restricted scopes require verification. That policy concerns apps built on Google OAuth; its least-privilege principle is also a useful way to assess an integration’s consent request. See Google’s OAuth 2.0 policies.

How to connect an inbox more safely
- Define the job. Decide whether the assistant needs to search, summarize, classify, draft, send, archive, or delete. Do not grant broad access for a narrow task.
- Inspect the consent screen. Check whether it requests message-body access, compose or send, modification or deletion, and access to other account data. Ask whether each permission is necessary for the feature you want.
- Start with the narrowest useful access. Use metadata access if headers and labels are enough. If the assistant needs message contents, begin with read-only access when the integration offers it. Add write permissions only for a specific task that requires them.
- Keep consequential actions reviewable. Require your confirmation before sending or changing a message. Review the recipient, exact message body, and action—not just the assistant’s summary of what it plans to do.
- Give specific instructions. Limit a request to named messages, a date range, or a defined task. OpenAI advises asking an agent to do specific things rather than giving it wide latitude to follow potentially harmful instructions from sources such as email. Avoid prompts like “handle everything in my inbox.”
- Verify the integration. Confirm the app’s identity and inspect its requested permissions and controls. Google advises against connecting Workspace MCP servers to untrusted or unverified applications and recommends reviewing actions; see its Workspace MCP documentation.
- Revoke access when finished. Remove an integration you no longer use. Google’s OAuth policy says tokens should be stored encrypted, revoked when no longer needed, and deleted after revocation. The account’s connected-app settings are the usual place to review and remove access; exact labels vary by provider.
Can an email hack your AI assistant?
An email can attempt to manipulate an assistant through instructions embedded in the message. That does not mean every email can take over every assistant: the possible actions depend in part on the assistant’s design and the permissions granted. If it can only read messages, it has less ability to alter the inbox than an integration allowed to send, modify, or delete mail. Least privilege limits possible damage; it does not make malicious content harmless.
OpenAI recommends limiting an agent’s access to the data it needs, reviewing consequential actions before confirming, and using explicit, narrow instructions. Google Cloud similarly recommends separating untrusted data from instructions and giving an agent only the roles and permissions needed for its task. Human approval is a useful control, not a guarantee: it helps only when you check what you are approving.

How to compare inbox-connected assistants
Compare the integration’s actual controls, not just its marketing description. Look for clear answers to these questions:
- What can it read? Metadata only, selected messages if supported, or message bodies across the inbox?
- What can it change? Nothing, drafts, sent mail, archived or modified messages, or deleted messages?
- When is approval required? Does a person have to confirm before a consequential action, and does the confirmation show the exact recipient, content, and change?
- How is data handled? What are the retention period, model-training use, subprocessors, deletion process, and revocation options?
- Can you audit it? Are requested scopes and tool actions clearly listed, with a record you can review?
Retention and training practices depend on the assistant and integration; no universal answer applies. Read the provider’s current privacy terms and the consent request before connecting an account.
