Its EC2 article was last updated April 16, 2020, so treat its named instance-family and Windows-version guidance as historical and verify today’s AWS options and drivers before deploying.
What you need to run vMix on EC2
Unlike a basic cloud Windows desktop, a suitable vMix instance must expose graphics hardware through a virtual display that vMix can use. vMix’s EC2 overview says G4 or higher instances support the needed technology and calls for NVIDIA Grid drivers, warning that standard NVIDIA drivers will not work. Because that overview was last updated April 16, 2020, it is not a current AWS catalog guarantee: check the current EC2 instance families, Windows images, driver instructions, and vMix requirements before you launch.
The same vMix page names Windows Server 2019 x64 and at least four allocated CPU cores as its documented baseline. These are requirements stated in that older guide, not a workload-specific instance-size recommendation or a performance promise. Your actual needs depend on the sources, resolution, frame rate, graphics, recording, and number of outputs in your production.
- A Windows EC2 instance with directly attached graphics and virtual-display support.
- The EC2-specific NVIDIA Grid driver path, rather than an ordinary NVIDIA driver.
- A remote-control method other than RDP for operating vMix.
- A production plan covering sources, target output, recording, destinations, and the operator’s network location.
Plan the workload before choosing an instance
Write down what the production must do before selecting a machine. Include the number and type of video sources, output resolution and frame rate, graphics or overlays, whether you will record locally, how many streams you will send, and where the operator will connect from. The cited vMix and AWS material does not establish a current EC2 size for a particular combination of workloads, so do not select a family or size based on a generic claim that it will handle every show.

Also decide where you will send the finished program. The vMix streaming help page recommends FFMPEG for most situations and lists H.264, AV1, or HEVC video with AAC audio. Those are encoding options, not a universal preset: use the receiving provider’s current ingest requirements and test the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with your real output workload.
Set up vMix on AWS EC2
- Choose a GPU-backed Windows instance. In the EC2 launch workflow, select a Windows image and an instance that provides directly attached virtual-display graphics. vMix’s 2020 overview names G4 or higher, but confirm the currently available family and supported Windows image in your AWS region instead of treating that older recommendation as a live catalog list.
- Install the correct graphics driver. Follow the current AWS instructions for the EC2 instance’s NVIDIA Grid driver. vMix’s EC2 guide says Grid is required and that normal NVIDIA drivers will not work. Confirm that the driver matches the instance and Windows image you launched.
- Make the GPU display primary in Windows. In Windows display settings, identify the display connected to the graphics adapter, set it as the primary display, and disable other displays connected to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or a similar virtual adapter if they interfere. vMix needs access to the graphics-backed display.
- Check graphics access before building the show. Open vMix and add an MP4 input. If the video appears blank, vMix’s guide says it cannot access the graphics card; resolve the display or driver configuration before adding production complexity.
- Install and configure vMix for the planned production. Add the intended sources and graphics, set the desired output format, configure recording if needed, and set up streaming to the selected destination. For encoding, use the destination’s ingest specification; the current vMix help page recommends FFMPEG for most situations and lists H.264, AV1, or HEVC with AAC audio.
- Use a supported remote-control approach. vMix recommends a direct screen-capture solution such as VNC, TeamViewer, or AnyDesk, or a cloud desktop login solution such as Teradici. Some options may require an extra license. Do not rely on RDP to operate vMix; test the chosen approach from the operator’s actual location.
- Rehearse the complete workload. Run the actual sources, graphics, recording, stream outputs, remote-control session, and network route together. vMix warns that shared cloud services do not guarantee performance and advises thorough testing in advance. A configuration that opens vMix successfully is not by itself proof that it can sustain a live production.
Configure and validate the stream
There is no bitrate or resolution number that fits every destination and production. Set the output to the receiving platform’s current ingest requirements, then validate it with a rehearsal. Confirm that the selected video codec and AAC audio are accepted, that the resolution and frame rate match the intended program, and that the remote session remains usable while vMix is under load. The vMix help page recommends FFMPEG for most situations, but destination compatibility and the actual workload should determine the final settings.

Fix common EC2 vMix problems
MP4 input is blank in vMix
vMix identifies this as a sign that it cannot access the graphics card. Recheck that the NVIDIA Grid driver is installed for the instance, that the graphics-connected display is primary, and that a basic-adapter display is not taking precedence. Test the MP4 again before proceeding.
vMix opens, but graphics or performance are unreliable
Confirm the instance exposes the required virtual-display graphics and that the correct driver is in use. Then reduce the test to the planned workload and validate each component under load. vMix explicitly cautions that shared cloud services do not guarantee performance; the cited material provides no current workload-specific EC2 sizing guarantee.

Remote operation behaves incorrectly over RDP
Switch to a direct screen-capture or cloud desktop login method of the kind vMix recommends, and test it during the actual production rehearsal. Account for any additional software licensing requirements.
The stream will not connect or the output is rejected
Check the receiving provider’s current ingest requirements and compare them with vMix’s output codec, audio format, resolution, and frame rate. The vMix help page’s FFMPEG recommendation is general guidance, not a guarantee that every destination accepts every listed format.

EC2 vMix versus AWS’s managed live-streaming solution
Running vMix on EC2 means you operate the vMix production and mixing layer on a Windows machine with graphics access. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference solution is a different architecture: it uses MediaLive for ingest and transcoding, MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for delivery. Its guide describes redundant source feeds and adaptive-bitrate output. It is a managed pipeline option, not a recipe for installing vMix on EC2.
| Consideration | vMix on EC2 | AWS Live Streaming reference solution |
|---|---|---|
| Production and mixing | You operate vMix on a GPU-backed Windows EC2 instance. | The reference architecture uses managed ingest, transcoding, packaging, and delivery services; it is not a vMix installation. |
| Source and output workflow | Plan and test the vMix sources, outputs, and remote operation for your production. | The AWS guide describes redundant source feeds and adaptive-bitrate output. |
| Regional availability | Current vMix-compatible EC2 family and image availability must be checked in the chosen region. | The AWS guide says supported regions matter for MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect. |
| Cost information established by the cited pages | A current workload-specific EC2 price is not stated. | A numeric comparable price is not stated; AWS advises stopping solution resources after an event to help avoid unnecessary charges. |
For the managed reference solution, AWS’s implementation guide advises stopping the resources created for the solution after the event to help avoid unnecessary charges. That instruction applies to that solution; it is not specific EC2 billing guidance for a vMix instance. Current EC2 rates and regional availability should be checked directly with AWS before committing to a production setup.
