Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A managed cron service can reliably trigger a job, but it cannot guarantee that the work behind the trigger completes exactly once. Build for at-least-once delivery: make each logical run safe to repeat, bound its execution and retries, provide a path for exhausted failures, and monitor both scheduler delivery and application results.
What a managed cron service does—and does not—guarantee
A scheduler handles when to trigger work and how to deliver that trigger to a configured target. For example, Amazon EventBridge Scheduler supports cron, rate, and one-time schedules for AWS targets; Google Cloud Scheduler sends recurring jobs to supported targets such as HTTP/S endpoints, Pub/Sub topics, and App Engine applications.
Neither trigger nor delivery is proof that the business task finished correctly. AWS documents at-least-once delivery, and Google says Cloud Scheduler is designed for at-least-once delivery, with rare duplicate requests possible. A timeout can also leave the outcome uncertain: the target may have completed work even if the scheduler did not receive an acknowledgment. Design for repeated requests rather than assuming exactly-once effects.
Choose a scheduler by operational fit
Choose based on where the target runs, how failures are recovered, and how you will observe results. The table summarizes documented differences; it is not a universal ranking.

Build a reliable scheduled-job pattern
- Define what counts as one logical run. Give each intended occurrence a stable identity, such as a job name plus its scheduled timestamp. Decide whether a late run should catch up, be skipped, or process only the latest state. Google documents using the job name and the
X-CloudScheduler-ScheduleTimeheader to identify a request across retries. Cloud Scheduler overview - Make repeated requests harmless. Store or derive the occurrence identity and check it before applying side effects. For example, a payment or email operation should not happen twice because a request was retried. Use a durable record or a downstream idempotency mechanism appropriate to the operation.
- Bound the work and acknowledge at the right point. Set a target timeout that reflects the task. Return success only when work has reached its intended success point. If the task may exceed the scheduler’s request or execution limits, have the schedule enqueue durable work and let a worker process it; monitor that queue and worker separately.
- Choose finite retries deliberately. Set retry count, backoff, and event age or retention to match the time downstream dependencies may need to recover and how stale the work may become. A retry window that overlaps the next scheduled occurrence can create collisions or a backlog, so decide how overlap and lateness should be handled.
- Route exhausted failures somewhere actionable. Where supported, send undelivered events to a dead-letter queue (DLQ). Alert on dropped events or new DLQ messages, and document how an operator can inspect and safely replay a failed occurrence. A retry policy does not repair the underlying cause.
- Observe delivery and business outcome separately. Alert on missing invocations and scheduler delivery errors, but also record whether the application completed the intended work. Use structured logs containing the schedule or job identity, intended run time, attempt, target, and outcome. An invocation-attempt metric alone does not prove successful completion.
- Exercise failure paths before relying on the schedule. In a controlled environment, verify duplicate handling, retry behavior, timeout ambiguity, downstream throttling, alerts, and replay. Confirm that retrying a completed-but-unacknowledged request does not repeat its side effect.
Handle timing and overlapping executions explicitly
Use UTC for a steady cadence
A schedule expressed in local time can shift around daylight-saving transitions. Google identifies this as expected behavior and recommends UTC when exact cadence matters. Also confirm the provider’s timing precision: AWS documents invocation within the scheduled minute, rather than at a guaranteed exact second. Do not promise wall-clock precision beyond the service’s documented behavior.

Decide what happens when a run is still active
Do not assume providers have identical overlap semantics. Google documents that only one instance of a job should run at a time; later executions can be delayed while an earlier execution remains outstanding, and rare duplicates are still possible. A long-running job can therefore make work late. If punctuality matters, keep the scheduled handler short and enqueue durable work, or design explicit locking and recovery for the target.

Diagnose the common silent-failure patterns
- The schedule appears healthy, but no business result exists: trace the target’s application logs and durable side effects; an attempted invocation is not task completion.
- A timeout is followed by duplicate work: treat the first attempt’s outcome as ambiguous and use the stable run identity to prevent a second side effect.
- Retries keep running after the result is useful: shorten or otherwise tune the retry window to the job’s acceptable lateness, and define whether stale occurrences should be skipped or caught up.
- Later executions are delayed: inspect for an outstanding or unacknowledged run, then review target timeouts and overlap behavior. Google documents this failure mode for Cloud Scheduler; check the corresponding semantics for other providers.
- Failures disappear after retry exhaustion: use a DLQ where available, alert on its activity or dropped invocations, and follow a safe investigation-and-replay procedure.
