Install the Playwright-matched Chromium browser and system dependencies, save timestamped captures, and make the job fail visibly when a page cannot be captured. No specific VPS plan has been verified as sufficient for every site or capture frequency, so begin with one target at a time and measure the workload on the plan you choose.
What you need before you start
- A Linux VPS running a distribution and architecture supported by your Playwright version. Playwright’s current installation documentation lists Debian 12/13 and Ubuntu 22.04/24.04/26.04 on x86-64 or arm64; confirm support against the documentation when setting up or upgrading. Playwright system requirements.
- Node.js and a project directory where you can pin the Playwright dependency in a lockfile.
- Enough available memory, CPU, disk, and network transfer for your pages and schedule. Advertised VPS specifications do not establish how a particular browser workload will perform.
- Permission to capture each target site. Keep credentials out of source control, avoid excessive request rates, and restrict or rotate stored screenshots if they may contain personal or confidential information.
The steps below use Ubuntu or Debian, Node.js, and Chromium. The same approach can be adapted to other supported Linux configurations, but package installation commands may differ.
Install Playwright and Chromium

Install the Chromium build and Linux dependencies that match that installed Playwright package:
npx playwright install --with-deps chromiumPlaywright requires its supported browser binaries; after changing the Playwright version, check whether you also need to reinstall those binaries. See Playwright browser installation.
Create a recurring screenshot script
Save this as capture.mjs in the project directory. It processes URLs sequentially, waits for a page-specific readiness condition, and writes a timestamped PNG for each successful capture. The example uses a DOM-ready condition rather than waiting for every network request to stop, since analytics and other persistent requests can prevent network idle from arriving.

Choose the right screenshot scope and format
By default, page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }) captures the viewport. Setting fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page, potentially producing a very tall file. Playwright describes it as a screenshot of the full scrollable page, “as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.” See Playwright screenshots.

Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshots. Choose the format according to your downstream use and file-size needs, and use its scale setting to choose CSS-pixel or device-pixel output. See the Page screenshot API for current option names and behavior.
Make readiness explicit
A fixed delay is not a guarantee that a page is ready. Prefer a page-specific selector or other condition tied to the content you need. If the page loads images lazily, determine whether scrolling is needed to trigger them before taking a full-page capture. Animations, rotating content, timestamps, and personalized elements can also change between runs; consider whether to wait, mask, or hide them using Playwright’s supported screenshot options and page controls.
Schedule the script with cron
For a daily run at 02:15 server time, edit the crontab for the Linux user that owns the project:

Run the command manually once before relying on the schedule:
cd ~/site-captures && node capture.mjsInspect captures/ for output and capture.log for errors after the scheduled time. For more control over retries, environment variables, or missed-run behavior, a systemd timer is another standard Linux scheduling option.
Choose an Indian VPS by workload, not headline price
There is no verified cheapest plan for a particular screenshot cadence in the available provider information, and no independent resource benchmark establishes a minimum VPS size. Treat provider specifications as vendor claims, then validate your own pages and schedule before scaling up.

Before purchasing, compare the full recurring cost and the terms, not only the introductory monthly figure:
- Memory available to Chromium, CPU allocation, and whether CPU cores are shared.
- Storage headroom for the operating system, browser, logs, and retained screenshots.
- Monthly transfer allowance and datacenter location relative to the target sites and your users.
- Whether backups are included, how restoration works, and what support is offered.
- Billing currency, GST treatment, promotional period, and renewal price.
- Whether the provider permits the workload you intend to run.

Keep captures comparable, reliable, and affordable
Control environmental variation
Two screenshots of the same site can differ because of operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, or headless mode. For comparisons, keep the VPS image, Playwright version, Chromium build, viewport, device scale, timezone, and capture settings stable. Playwright discusses these sources of visual variation in its visual comparisons documentation.

- Begin with one browser process and one target at a time. Increase concurrency only after observing memory, CPU, and completion times on the actual VPS.
- Set navigation and script timeouts, as in the example, so a slow or stuck site does not hold the job indefinitely.
- Keep nonzero exit status on failure and review logs or add monitoring that alerts you when the scheduled job fails to produce expected files.
- Use timestamped filenames to avoid overwriting earlier evidence; remove old captures on a retention schedule that matches your storage capacity and privacy needs.
Estimate storage and transfer before scaling
Screenshot size varies with page dimensions, format, content, and capture scope; full-page images can be much taller than viewport captures. Track actual output sizes and free disk space over several runs before setting a retention period. Likewise, check transfer consumption against the VPS allowance rather than estimating from the advertised port speed alone.

Chromium will not launch
Likely cause: The installed browser binary or Linux libraries do not match the Playwright package. Fix: From the project directory, rerun npx playwright install --with-deps chromium. After upgrading Playwright, check whether its browser needs reinstalling.
Navigation times out or the page is blank
Likely cause: The target is slow, unavailable, blocking the request, or waiting on resources that never settle. Fix: Check that the VPS can reach the URL, use a navigation condition appropriate to the page, and wait for a specific content selector rather than relying on an arbitrary long delay. Keep timeouts finite and log the failing URL.
The screenshot misses content or lazy-loaded images
Likely cause: The page has not rendered the content, or images load only after scrolling. Fix: Wait for the relevant selector and, where necessary, scroll through the page before capturing. Verify the result on the target page; fullPage: true changes capture dimensions but does not itself define when all site content is ready.

Cron runs manually but not on schedule
Likely cause: Cron uses a limited environment, a different working directory, or a different Node path. Fix: Use absolute paths, include the cd command, confirm the user’s crontab with crontab -l, and inspect the redirected log and server timezone.
Disk fills or old screenshots disappear
Likely cause: Timestamped captures accumulate without a retention policy, or full-page files are larger than expected. Fix: Check free space with df -h, measure real file sizes, reduce unnecessary full-page captures, and implement a retention rule after deciding how long the files must be kept.
