Install Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition from Steam, force Proton Experimental (or the newest numbered Proton available), and make a first launch before adding any options. Start at 1280×800 with medium graphics and a firm 30, 40, or 45 FPS cap; choose the cap that remains consistent on your Deck. Proton versions change, so the best setting is the build that launches and gives stable frame pacing on your current SteamOS, game files, and Rockstar account state—not a universal version that works for everyone.
The Complete Edition needs 22GB of drive space and requires a Rockstar Games account plus an internet connection for initial activation. GTA IV is a Windows game, so Steam Deck runs it through Proton. The procedure below gives you a controlled setup and a way to recover when the game returns to the library, shows a black screen, loses controller input, or develops uneven pacing.
What you need before installing
Confirm these prerequisites before changing compatibility settings. They prevent many apparent Proton failures that are actually installation, account, or storage problems.

The Steam listing identifies Rockstar North and Rockstar Toronto as developers, Rockstar Games as publisher, and 24 March 2020 as the Complete Edition release date. The Complete Edition replaced earlier digital releases; Games for Windows Live, multiplayer mode, and leaderboards were removed from this package. Do not expect the old PC services to reappear through a different Proton build.

Storage expansion when the internal drive is full
A Steam Deck-compatible microSD card can provide the needed space when internal storage is occupied. Choose a reputable UHS-I A2 V30 512GB or 1TB card and format it through Steam Deck’s storage settings. Storage capacity does not change Proton compatibility or frame rate; it only gives Steam room to install the game and its prefix.
Install the Complete Edition and complete first-run setup
- Open Steam in Gaming Mode, select Store, and search for Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition. Purchase or select the edition already in your library.
- Choose Install, select the internal drive or a formatted microSD card, and wait for the download and shader processing to finish.
- Open Library, highlight the game, and press the Menu button (the three-line button on the left side of the Deck).
- Select Properties, then Compatibility. Turn on Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose Proton Experimental first. If your menu has a newer numbered stable Proton, that is also a reasonable starting point. Close Properties and launch without adding any launch options.
- Allow the Rockstar account window or first-run installer to appear. Sign in, link the account if prompted, and let activation complete while the Deck is online.
- Exit normally, then launch once more. This second launch confirms that the prefix and account state were created before you begin performance tuning.
Do not add several fixes during the first launch. If the game fails, you need to know whether the failure comes from the Proton build, an option, the prefix, or account activation. A clean baseline makes each later change meaningful.
Choosing the best Proton version
There is no permanent, one-size-fits-all “best Proton” for GTA IV. Proton builds, SteamOS images, game updates, and Rockstar launcher states move independently. A build that works today can regress after an update, while another build may fix a video or input problem without changing your graphics settings.

- Start with Proton Experimental.
- If Experimental does not launch, select the newest numbered stable Proton shown in Properties → Compatibility.
- Launch and record the exact symptom: immediate return to the library, a black screen, missing video, sign-in failure, controller loss, or inconsistent pacing.
- Change only the forced Proton version and test again. Keep the graphics profile and launch-options field unchanged.
- When a build works, play a repeatable route for several minutes, including driving and entering a mission, before deciding that it is stable.
ProtonDB reports are useful community evidence for matching a Proton build, launch option, or workaround to a symptom. They are not guarantees across different Deck models, SteamOS images, Proton versions, game updates, or Rockstar launcher states. Read recent reports that describe your same symptom and note the date and Proton build; do not copy an old workaround automatically.

How to compare two builds fairly
Use one variable at a time. Keep resolution, graphics settings, frame cap, refresh rate, and controller layout constant. For each Proton build, note:
- Whether the Rockstar sign-in and activation flow completes.
- Whether the game reaches the main menu and loads a save without a black screen or missing video.
- Whether Steam Input and the in-game bindings respond correctly.
- Whether a fixed cap produces even frame pacing during driving, combat, and cutscenes.
- Whether the result survives a full exit and relaunch.
- Power draw and battery behavior on your specific Deck model.
Select the build with the fewest compromises, not simply the one that produces the highest uncapped counter. If a SteamOS or game update changes the result, repeat this short comparison instead of assuming your previous choice remains optimal.
Baseline graphics settings for stable frame pacing
Begin conservatively at the Deck’s native 1280×800 resolution and medium quality. GTA IV can vary its workload substantially between quiet interiors, dense traffic, long view-distance scenes, and scripted video. A stable cap usually feels better than an uncapped rate that rises and falls constantly.

Set and test a cap
- In Gaming Mode, open the Quick Access menu with the three-dot button.
- Open the Performance tab and enable the frame-rate limit control.
- Set 30 FPS and enable the performance overlay if you need to observe frame time and GPU/CPU load.
- Load the same save and repeat a short route that includes driving, turning the camera, entering an interior, and starting a mission.
- If pacing is even and you want more responsiveness, repeat at 40 FPS, then 45 FPS. Keep the lower target whenever the higher one produces frequent drops or visible judder.
Do not treat the overlay’s peak number as a promise. Valve notes that Deck product specifications are subject to change, and Deck display, memory, storage, and thermal configurations differ by model. Your sustained result can therefore differ from another owner’s report even with identical Proton and game settings.

Controller, display, and Rockstar sign-in checks
Controller input
Steam Input normally supplies a gamepad layout, but a migrated or community layout can map buttons unexpectedly.
- From the game’s library page, choose the controller icon and inspect the active Steam Input layout.
- Try the official gamepad layout first. If a control is missing, test a well-rated community layout rather than stacking custom bindings immediately.
- Inside GTA IV, open the controls menu and confirm that movement, camera, accelerate, brake, and pause are assigned to the expected buttons.
- Disconnect external controllers temporarily while testing; two active devices can make it appear that inputs are being ignored.
Black screen or missing video
Complete the first-run account and installer steps before changing graphics. Remove every launch option that is not clearly required, then test another Proton build. If the title still shows a black screen, create a fresh prefix as described below. A video symptom can be build-specific, so compare current community reports rather than assuming the graphics profile is at fault.
Rockstar account and activation
Confirm that Wi-Fi is connected, the system clock is correct, and the Rockstar account used in the sign-in window is the one linked to the purchase. Activation is required for the first setup; a later offline launch may depend on the launcher state and current service behavior, so do not promise offline or online features that the Complete Edition does not provide.

Verify the installation
- Open Library, highlight GTA IV, press Menu, and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files (the label can vary slightly with the Steam client), then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Relaunch with the same Proton build and no new launch options.
Verification replaces damaged or missing game files but does not erase a problematic Proton prefix. If the symptom remains, proceed to a single Proton change before considering a prefix reset.

Remove unnecessary launch options
In Properties → General, inspect the Launch Options field. Delete options copied from an unrelated guide unless a current report specifically ties that option to your symptom and Proton build. Multiple flags can conflict, mask the real cause, or stop working after an update. Test with the field empty, then add at most one documented option and retest.
Rebuild a damaged Proton prefix
A prefix stores the Windows compatibility environment and per-game launcher data. Rebuilding it can fix a corrupted first-run state, but it also removes per-game tweaks and may require Rockstar sign-in again. Record your Proton choice, launch options, controller layout, and graphics settings first.
- Exit the game and Steam completely, then restart the Deck.
- Return to Properties → Compatibility and note the currently forced Proton build.
- Use Steam’s installed-files tools or desktop file manager to remove only GTA IV’s Proton prefix, not the game installation or unrelated prefixes. If you are unsure which folder belongs to the game, do not delete files blindly; switch Proton versions and consult current support guidance instead.
- Launch with Proton Experimental or the newest stable build and no launch options.
- Complete the Rockstar first-run and activation flow again, then restore settings one at a time.
If a clean prefix fails on two current Proton builds while verification succeeds, the remaining cause may be account service availability, a game update, or a SteamOS regression rather than a graphics setting.
Power, storage, and model-to-model differences
Frame-rate and battery outcomes vary with the Deck model, display configuration, thermal conditions, SteamOS version, Proton build, game update, and graphics profile. No authoritative single FPS or battery figure applies to every Deck. Use the performance overlay to compare your own fixed-cap tests, and prefer a lower cap when it reduces fan noise and frame-time spikes.

Installing on a microSD card can solve a capacity problem, but it is not a compatibility tweak. Keep adequate free space for Steam downloads and shader or prefix work, and avoid interrupting updates while the device is writing to the card.
Keeping the setup reliable after updates
- Before a SteamOS, Proton, or GTA IV update, note the working Proton build, launch-options state, cap, and graphics profile.
- After updating, launch once without changing anything. If the symptom changes, revert only the Proton build first.
- Do not reset the prefix as a routine maintenance step. Use it when the prefix appears corrupted or when a documented first-run problem persists after verification and a Proton comparison.
- When reading ProtonDB, match the report’s game edition, Proton build, symptom, and approximate date. Community reports describe individual systems, not guarantees.
- Keep account credentials available because a prefix reset or launcher change can trigger sign-in again.
What the Complete Edition does and does not include
The package includes the original GTA IV campaign and both Episodes from Liberty City. The Steam update notice states that Games for Windows Live, multiplayer mode, and leaderboards were removed. Proton can make the Windows single-player software run on Deck, but it cannot restore services that were removed from this edition.
For the most dependable setup, keep the installation clean, force one current Proton build, finish activation, cap the frame rate, and troubleshoot in a controlled sequence. That method gives you a repeatable baseline while allowing for differences between Deck hardware and future updates.
