To stream from Raspberry Pi OS Lite to YouTube, install FFmpeg, choose the right input for your camera or video source, and send an H.264 stream to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Use a bitrate your Pi can encode and your internet connection can sustain; test from the actual streaming location before relying on it.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi running Raspberry Pi OS Lite, with SSH or local console access. Lite is the command-line-only edition intended for headless setups. Raspberry Pi OS downloads currently identify the Lite release as Debian Trixie-based 64-bit, dated 15 September 2026; check the download page for the current release when installing.
  • A working video input: a Raspberry Pi camera, USB camera, network stream, or prerecorded file. Each uses a different FFmpeg input method.
  • A YouTube channel able to go live, access to YouTube Live Control Room, and a stable internet upload connection.
  • FFmpeg installed on the Pi. Available package versions and encoders vary with OS repository and build, so verify your own installation rather than assuming a particular hardware encoder is present.

The title is about India, but there is no single useful national upload-speed figure for this setup. Wi-Fi, mobile uplinks, congestion, router placement, and service plans vary. Measure the connection at the Pi’s actual location and at the time the stream will run.

Install and inspect FFmpeg

  1. Update Raspberry Pi OS: connect over SSH or open a local terminal, then run sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade. Reboot if the upgrade requests it.
  2. Install FFmpeg: run sudo apt install ffmpeg.
  3. Check the installed build: run ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders. Look for an H.264 encoder that your build actually provides. Do not put an encoder name in a command unless it appears in this list.
  4. For a Raspberry Pi camera, check the camera tools: Raspberry Pi OS includes the basic rpicam applications; Lite includes rpicam-apps-lite. Run rpicam-vid --help to see options supported by the installed version and camera.

Raspberry Pi documents rpicam-vid as a way to capture video and write an encoded bitstream. Its FFmpeg/libav backend can encode audio and video, using hardware H.264 where available. Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders; Raspberry Pi’s documentation says --low-latency reduces encoding latency with trade-offs in coding efficiency, multicore use, and potentially maximum frame rate, while 1080p30 remains readily achievable in that documented context. This is not a performance guarantee for every FFmpeg pipeline or Pi model. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Choose a YouTube profile the Pi and connection can handle

YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four seconds). Its recommended H.264 bitrates include:

Profile YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
720p30 8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
480p30 4 Mbps
360p30 3 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that your Pi can encode the profile or that your connection can maintain its bitrate. Choose a conservative target based on sustained upload capacity and observed encoder performance, then check Live Control Room’s stream-health feedback. YouTube’s guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; it states, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”

For CBR, set a target bitrate and matching maximum rate where the selected encoder supports those options. Set the GOP/keyframe interval to two seconds: at 30 frames per second that means 60 frames; at 60 frames per second, 120 frames. Encoder option names differ, so consult the encoder’s help output rather than assuming x264-specific flags will work with another encoder. Use AAC or MP3 audio; YouTube requires AAC for RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 surround sound.

Get the ingest URL and protect your stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the event or stream you intend to run.
  2. Copy the current ingest server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Prefer the RTMPS destination when YouTube provides it.
  3. Keep the key private: treat it like a password. Do not paste it into a public script, repository, screenshot, or message. Avoid putting it directly in a command you save in shell history.
  4. Confirm that the stream is configured as intended—such as private or unlisted for a test—and use the current settings displayed in Live Control Room. Ingest endpoints, key names, and account options can vary or change.

The commands below use placeholders. Replace <RTMPS_URL> and <STREAM_KEY> with the current values from your own Control Room; never publish a real key.

Run FFmpeg for the input you actually have

Prerecorded video file

For a file, -re reads at the file’s native rate so FFmpeg does not send it as fast as possible. This example re-encodes to H.264 using the x264 encoder only if your FFmpeg build includes it; adjust the profile, bitrate, frame rate, and audio mapping to match the file and your tested target.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "<RTMPS_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"

This example’s 4 Mbps video target is within YouTube’s recommended 480p30 rate, but the command does not scale the input to 480p. For a different output resolution, add an appropriate video filter such as -vf scale=1280:720 only if that is the profile you intend and the Pi can encode it. A lower resolution does not automatically reduce the encoder’s workload unless the output is actually scaled.

-c:v copy can avoid video re-encoding only when the source is already encoded in a format and settings YouTube accepts and the timestamps and container path work. Do not assume passthrough will be compatible merely because the file plays locally. A looped file playlist requires deliberate segment transitions and continuous timestamps; test the exact loop behavior before using it for a live event.

Raspberry Pi camera

Do not treat a camera as a file: a live capture source supplies frames in real time, so it normally does not need -re. Raspberry Pi documents both rpicam-vid capture and an FFmpeg/libav backend, but the exact options depend on installed package version and camera. First inspect rpicam-vid --help and the available FFmpeg encoders. A starting point with FFmpeg’s V4L2 input, if your camera setup exposes a V4L2 device, looks like this:

ffmpeg -f v4l2 -framerate 30 -video_size 1280x720 -i /dev/video0 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency -g 60 -b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M -an -f flv "<RTMPS_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"

This is not a universal Raspberry Pi camera command: many Pi camera configurations use the rpicam stack rather than exposing the camera as /dev/video0. The example also omits audio (-an). Add a separately configured audio input if needed, and test audio/video synchronization and the full workload.

USB camera or network stream

A USB camera may expose a V4L2 device, but its device path, supported frame sizes, and frame rates depend on the camera and OS. Inspect device capabilities and substitute the actual input device and supported mode. A network source such as RTSP uses a different input URL and may already arrive encoded. Decide whether to copy or re-encode only after checking its codec, timestamps, and compatibility with YouTube.

There is no safe one-size-fits-all command for these sources: their input options, audio paths, buffering, and real-time behavior differ. Preserve the same output requirements—RTMPS, supported video/audio codecs, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate that survives testing—while using the correct input-specific options.

Test before relying on the stream

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test and use movement and audio similar to the real stream. YouTube recommends testing under realistic conditions and monitoring stream health and messages.
  2. Run the stream from the Pi’s intended location and network. Measure sustained upload performance there, at the likely operating time; a brief peak is not a dependable target.
  3. Watch FFmpeg output and YouTube Live Control Room for connection errors, dropped frames, warnings, or poor stream health.
  4. Check Pi CPU load, temperature, and throttling during a sustained run. If encoding falls behind, reduce resolution or frame rate, choose a more suitable available encoder, or use compatible passthrough where possible.
  5. Change one variable at a time—resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or encoder settings—and repeat the test before the real broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg says the encoder is unknown The installed build lacks the named encoder. Run ffmpeg -encoders; select an encoder actually listed or install a build that provides the needed codec.
No camera device or input opens The camera is not exposed through that input path, the device name is wrong, or camera configuration differs. Check the device and camera stack; for a Pi camera inspect rpicam-vid --help and the Raspberry Pi camera documentation rather than assuming /dev/video0.
YouTube does not receive the stream Incorrect or stale ingest URL/key, wrong protocol, network failure, or account/event setup issue. Copy the current destination from Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS where offered, keep the key private, and check FFmpeg’s connection output.
Stream health reports instability or dropped frames Upload variation, Wi-Fi or mobile congestion, or an overloaded encoder. Check upload at the installation site; reduce bitrate or output profile, improve the connection path, and inspect Pi load and temperature.
Video works but audio is absent or out of sync No audio input was configured, the selected audio device is wrong, or timestamps differ. Verify the input mapping and codec, remove -an if audio is required, and test synchronization with the actual source.
Copied video is rejected or behaves erratically The source codec/settings, timestamps, or container path are incompatible. Inspect the source properties; re-encode to an accepted profile if the Pi can sustain it, then repeat the private test.

YouTube policy checks for the content

Technical ingest success does not establish that you have rights to broadcast the material or that the channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules. Use video, music, and other material you own or are licensed to use; check the current YouTube policies that apply to copyright and reused content, especially before building a recurring stream around third-party material. A successful test is not a copyright clearance or monetization approval.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel 24/7 rather than capture a live camera, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud handles the looping, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
