You can run FFmpeg in a Docker container to send a church’s prerecorded video or other prepared media continuously to YouTube Live. Create a stream in YouTube Live Control Room, configure FFmpeg with YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL and stream key, and set Docker to restart the container if it exits. That helps recover from some failures, but it does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy picture and sound: monitor both the container and YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. A genuine 24/7 service also needs a plan for YouTube stream boundaries, content rights, and the machine and internet connection hosting the container.
What you need before configuring the stream
- A YouTube channel with access to create or schedule a live stream in Live Control Room.
- A host that can run Docker continuously—such as an existing church computer, a dedicated machine, or a VPS—with a stable upload connection.
- Media you have the right to stream, plus an FFmpeg build that supports the protocols and options you intend to use.
- A person or monitoring procedure able to check YouTube’s preview and stream-health status and respond if delivery fails.
Docker manages a container on its host; it does not provide hosting, internet connectivity, a YouTube stream key, or an audience-facing health check. You remain responsible for the host, network, YouTube session, and content.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Use the stream’s settings to obtain its server URL and stream key.
- Choose the RTMPS URL shown by Live Control Room where available. YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted extension to RTMP; FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.
- Provide the URL and key to FFmpeg when you start the encoder. YouTube’s setup guidance says to enter the server URL and key into the encoder, start sending the feed, and inspect the preview.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not commit it to source control, paste it into public examples, or expose it in logs. Use a private environment file or another secret-handling method appropriate to your host, restrict access to it, and rotate the key in Live Control Room if it is exposed. Do not assume a key copied from one stream’s settings is suitable for a different stream; verify the destination and session in YouTube.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the real connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For an H.264 stream, its recommended ingest rates include the following:

These are YouTube’s listed recommendations, not a measurement of your church’s upload connection or a requirement to select those formats. Higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate. Test the actual, sustained upload path from the host that will run FFmpeg; leave headroom for connection variation and other traffic rather than setting the encoder at the line’s theoretical maximum. YouTube explicitly recommends a speed test and monitoring stream health. Its full settings guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Use CBR and set a two-second keyframe interval as the starting point. Match the codec and audio format to your FFmpeg build and chosen encoder settings; do not copy settings intended for a different resolution or frame rate without checking their bitrate and keyframe behavior.
Run FFmpeg in Docker
The exact image, input, and FFmpeg command depend on your media and host. The essential pattern is to make the media available inside the container, pass the ingest destination securely, and keep FFmpeg in the foreground so Docker can observe its exit. The following Compose outline is illustrative; substitute a maintained FFmpeg image and valid input and command for your environment. It deliberately does not include a real stream key.

This is a starting shape, not a copy-and-run recipe: replace every uppercase value, select an image that actually contains the required FFmpeg encoders and protocols, and validate the resulting command against its documentation. In particular, use the exact RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room and the correct key for the selected stream. Keep credentials out of the Compose file if it is tracked or shared; inject them using a protected environment or secret mechanism supported by your deployment. Be aware that command-line arguments and environment configuration can still be visible to privileged users or diagnostic tools on the host.

A single looping file is only appropriate when its audio and video are suitable for continuous repetition. If the church needs a changing schedule or multiple items, build and test a playlist workflow rather than assuming one file represents a complete service schedule. FFmpeg options and protocol support vary by build: check FFmpeg documentation and verify the installed image with its own ffmpeg -version and encoder/protocol listings.
For a basic deployment, save the Compose configuration and start it from its directory with docker compose up -d. Check docker compose ps to see container state and docker compose logs -f church-stream to inspect FFmpeg output. Configure restart behavior without mistaking it for monitoring
Docker’s unless-stopped policy restarts a container after it exits and after Docker restarts, but respects a deliberate manual stop across daemon restarts. The always policy also restarts after exit or daemon restart, but its manual-stop behavior differs: Docker can start the container again when the daemon restarts. For an unattended service where operators expect an intentional stop to remain stopped, unless-stopped is generally the clearer starting choice. Docker explains these policies in Start containers automatically.
A restart policy reacts to container/process and daemon events; it cannot determine that the output is frozen, that the ingest URL or key is rejected, or that YouTube has interrupted delivery while FFmpeg remains alive. Pair container checks and logs with YouTube Live Control Room preview and health monitoring. A service that must be unattended needs an explicit alert and human response path for failures that automatic restart does not fix.

Plan for YouTube stream boundaries
Keeping a Docker container and FFmpeg process alive is not the same as maintaining one unlimited YouTube live session or archive. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as a platform-documented boundary, not a guarantee that a single archive can continue indefinitely. Decide how stream sessions will be created, ended, and restarted, and who will verify each transition in Live Control Room. The specific session workflow depends on how the church schedules streams and operates its channel; do not assume that restarting the container alone starts a fresh, audience-visible YouTube event.
Clear music and other content rights before unattended streaming
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A matched stream may be replaced by a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated if third-party material continues. For licensed material, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist; possessing a license by itself does not ensure automated live delivery will avoid interruption. Before leaving a church stream unattended, confirm that the church has appropriate rights for music, recordings, and other third-party material and that any required channel allowlisting is in place. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Choose where Docker should run
| Host option | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Existing local computer | May avoid new hardware, but must remain on, run Docker reliably, and have a dependable upload path. Someone at the church must handle power, updates, and failures. |
| Dedicated small computer | Separates the stream from everyday desktop use, but adds hardware, maintenance, and local network responsibilities. A mini PC is an option, not a requirement; test the actual workload and FFmpeg build. |
| VPS or other hosted compute | Can avoid dependence on a church computer and local power, but adds recurring hosting cost and administration. Verify network capacity, Docker support, and the host’s policies before choosing. |
Compare recurring cost, responsibility for operating-system updates, network reliability, and who can respond to a failed stream. No host type removes the need to monitor YouTube delivery.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm that FFmpeg is running, inspect its logs, and check that the exact server URL, RTMPS protocol, and stream key correspond to the active Live Control Room stream. Check for a protocol or port mismatch and verify the FFmpeg build supports the protocol.
- The container exits repeatedly: Read the FFmpeg error in
docker compose logs, verify the input path is mounted correctly and readable, and check the command and image’s available encoders. Docker can restart an exited container, but it cannot correct a bad input or invalid command. - The container is running but the picture is frozen or unhealthy: Check the input file and FFmpeg progress, then inspect YouTube’s preview and health indicators. A running process alone does not show that usable media is reaching YouTube.
- Video or audio buffers, drops, or becomes unstable: Test sustained upload from the streaming host, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a rate the connection can sustain, and leave headroom. Check that the selected CBR, codec, and keyframe interval follow the intended settings.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream: Check Live Control Room for stream warnings and review third-party content rights and any required Content ID allowlisting. Restarting FFmpeg does not resolve a rights match or a YouTube session issue.
- The stream ends around a session transition: Check whether the YouTube event ended or needs a new session. Follow the church’s planned Live Control Room procedure rather than treating a Docker restart as an event reset.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel rather than operating FFmpeg infrastructure, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- One flat price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; this is not a claim that every platform or content interruption can be prevented.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Plans can be purchased for a day, a week, a month, six months, or a year, and cancelled any time.
- Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The product is the same on every plan; only duration changes.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. Details are at StreamNeo.
