AWS Elemental MediaLive Anywhere runs MediaLive channels on node hardware at your facility, while AWS manages the encoding software and traffic. To set it up, design channel and node capacity, finalize network configuration, create networks and clusters, register nodes running RHEL 9.5, then create and start a compatible channel. Before going live, confirm the input type, single-pipeline configuration, public-internet output, permissions, and current AWS charges.

What MediaLive Anywhere does—and where it runs

MediaLive Anywhere is an on-premises deployment managed through AWS: the channels run on your organization’s node hardware rather than on AWS cloud infrastructure. AWS manages the encoding software and traffic, but your organization must secure access to the nodes and protect channel fidelity, logs, and metrics.

It is intended for organizations planning a managed live-encoding workflow around their own facilities and interfaces. It is not simply a standard cloud MediaLive channel pointed at a different location: Anywhere has its own input constraints, single-pipeline requirement, network setup, node capacity planning, and charge categories.

Check workflow compatibility before provisioning

  • Pipeline: Anywhere channels must use a single pipeline. If a second pipeline is present, its content is ignored.
  • Output: Output delivery must use the public internet. Anywhere channels cannot run on an Amazon VPC.
  • Inputs: Input support differs from standard AWS Cloud MediaLive. Check the Anywhere input deployment requirements for every source type before designing the channel. SDI inputs are specific to Anywhere.
  • Quotas and charges: Anywhere has a separate input quota category, and its input, output, and channel charges differ from Cloud MediaLive. Check the current AWS quotas and pricing before committing to a design; no numeric price is established here.

Plan hardware capacity, placement, and resilience

Start with the channels you expect to run at the same time, their encoding requirements, and any physical interface needs. Determine the processing power, memory, and SDI interfaces each workflow requires. The reviewed AWS node guidance names RHEL 9.5 but does not establish approved node models, processor or memory minimums, or SDI card models; obtain compatibility confirmation for the exact hardware before purchasing or deploying it.

Group channels by matching requirements

Use channel placement groups for channels with matching hardware requirements. Nodes in a cluster share processing capabilities and physical interfaces. MediaLive assigns the first running channel in a placement group to a free node; subsequent channels in that group run on that same node. Size each group for its expected peak concurrent processing, rather than assuming channels will distribute themselves across all nodes.

Choose active and backup capacity

Plan enough active nodes to handle peak demand in each group. Select backup capacity according to the resilience the organization needs. A backup node is part of capacity planning; it does not remove the need to size active nodes for the channels that must run concurrently.

Plan networks before you add nodes

Work with the network engineer to map management, input, and output traffic. AWS describes these as typical separate networks, but an organization can share networks where its traffic design permits. Reserve CIDR space for push-input addresses and output source addresses, document routes and gateways, and decide which route will be the default.

Order matters: create networks first, then clusters, then nodes. Finalize network configuration before adding nodes. AWS warns that a network cannot be modified after a node has been added to a cluster associated with it.

Create the network, cluster, and nodes

  1. Create the networks in the MediaLive console. Use the finalized traffic design, CIDRs, routes, gateways, and default route. Do not proceed with provisional network details if they may need to change after nodes are attached.
  2. Create the cluster. Associate it with the intended network and plan its nodes around the processing and physical-interface needs of its channel placement groups.
  3. Prepare each node. Install RHEL 9.5, the operating-system version specified in the reviewed AWS node setup guidance. Confirm hardware and interface compatibility for your workload separately; the reviewed guidance does not publish a model-by-model approval list.
  4. Create a registration script for each node. In the MediaLive console, specify that node’s permanent name, Active or Backup role, and interface mappings.
  5. Run the script on its assigned node over SSH. Run each script only on the node it was created for and within 24 hours of script creation. In the console, check for the node state to move from Registering to Active. AWS estimates activation takes approximately one minute.

Create compatible inputs and configure the channel

Set up inputs first

Create the inputs before creating the channel, and check the Anywhere input requirements for each source type. For SDI, the node must have the corresponding card, and the SDI source must be mapped to the card and port actually used on that node. AWS supports single-link and quad-link SDI configurations when the relevant cards are present; it does not establish specific card models in the reviewed guidance. Match cables to the installed card, ports, and signal configuration.

Choose the channel settings deliberately

When creating the channel, select the cluster and channel placement group chosen during capacity planning. AWS warns that an unsuitable selection can prevent the channel from running or overload a group needed by later channels. Set the channel class to single pipeline and output delivery to the public internet. Confirm the input is supported for Anywhere before starting the channel.

Set permissions and operate the channel

Separate configuration permissions from day-to-day runtime permissions where appropriate. The MediaLive Anywhere permissions guidance lists MediaLive actions for managing networks, clusters, nodes, and SDI sources; cluster creation also requires Amazon ECS actions. Operators need the MediaLive actions required for their runtime duties.

After configuration, start the channel and monitor its state and alerts through the MediaLive console and your organization’s operational process. MediaLive supports start and stop actions. Establish who responds to alerts and how node access, published logs, and metrics are protected as part of the deployment’s operating procedures.

Troubleshoot common setup blockers

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
A node does not become Active The registration script was run on a different node, was used after its 24-hour validity window, or the node has not completed registration. Verify the permanent node name and interface mappings, run the correct script over SSH on its assigned node within 24 hours of creation, and check whether the state progresses from Registering to Active.
A channel fails to run The selected cluster or placement group may not suit the channel, the input may not be supported for Anywhere, or the channel may not meet Anywhere’s pipeline or output requirements. Check the channel’s cluster and placement group against the capacity plan; verify input compatibility; use a single pipeline and public-internet output delivery.
A later channel cannot be placed or a group is overloaded Channels with mismatched needs may have been assigned to the same placement group, or peak concurrent demand may exceed its planned capacity. Revisit channel grouping and peak load before adding channels. Placement groups are intended for channels with matching hardware requirements, and later channels in a group run on the same node as the first running channel.
Network changes are blocked after node setup A node has already been added to a cluster associated with the network. Finalize networks, CIDRs, routes, gateways, and the default route before nodes are added; AWS warns that the associated network cannot then be modified.
An SDI source is unavailable or mapped incorrectly The node may lack the corresponding SDI card, or the source may not be mapped to the card and port in use. Confirm the installed card supports the intended single-link or quad-link configuration, then map the source to the correct card and port. Verify hardware compatibility with AWS before relying on a particular card or node model.
The team cannot create a cluster The operator may have MediaLive permissions but lack the Amazon ECS actions required for cluster creation. Review the operator’s configuration permissions, including the Amazon ECS actions needed for cluster creation.

Understand the cost and infrastructure trade-off
