To stream from Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, capture or open a video source, select or encode its video and audio, then send it in an FLV stream over YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS ingest. The exact command depends on whether you have a Pi camera, USB camera, file, or network stream—and on your Pi model and installed FFmpeg build. Bookworm camera users should start with rpicam-vid, not assume an older raspivid recipe still applies.

Choose the input path before writing a command

The signal path is: capture or input → FFmpeg stream selection and optional encoding → FLV muxing → YouTube RTMP/RTMPS ingest. You do not need to transcode video that is already compatible and can be passed through, but inputs that need conversion must be encoded in real time. Encoding load, audio handling, and device options differ by source.

Source Typical path What to verify
Pi camera Capture with Bookworm’s rpicam-vid; use its supported output or libav integration for processing and delivery. Camera detection, selected mode, encoder availability, and whether the chosen path supplies audio.
USB camera Open the device through the installed FFmpeg build’s supported capture interface, commonly V4L2 on Linux. Device name, supported pixel formats, resolution, frame rate, and separate audio input if needed.
Existing file Read the file with FFmpeg and either copy compatible streams or encode them for the live output. Whether the file has audio, its codecs, and whether real-time pacing and conversion keep up.
Network stream Open the network URL as an FFmpeg input and remux or encode as needed. Input protocol support, credentials, stability, and compatibility with YouTube’s output profile.

These are path choices, not guaranteed working commands for every camera, Pi, or FFmpeg package. Check actual device and build capabilities before committing to a public broadcast.

Check Bookworm, FFmpeg, and camera capabilities

  1. Identify the Pi model and confirm the OS release: cat /etc/os-release. Model matters because encoder hardware and software paths differ.

  2. Check whether FFmpeg is installed and which options and encoders it exposes: ffmpeg -version, ffmpeg -h, and ffmpeg -encoders. An encoder being documented elsewhere does not mean it is compiled into your installed build.

  3. For a Pi camera on Bookworm, inspect rpicam-vid --help and the Raspberry Pi camera documentation. Since Bookworm, Raspberry Pi camera applications use the rpicam-* names. rpicam-vid is the video capture application; it can produce an encoded bitstream, and Raspberry Pi documents libav support as an option.

  4. For USB capture, inspect the Linux video devices and their supported modes before setting FFmpeg input options. Input options belong before the corresponding -i; output options belong after the inputs. Exact syntax depends on the installed build and selected device.

Raspberry Pi says rpicam-vid uses hardware H.264 when available, and libav also uses hardware H.264 when present. Availability depends on device and software. Pi 5 uses software video encoders rather than the same hardware encoding path as earlier models. Raspberry Pi documents a --low-latency option that changes encoder behavior to emit frames sooner, with tradeoffs including somewhat lower coding efficiency, a potentially lower maximum frame rate, and less efficient multicore use. Raspberry Pi states that Pi 5 still achieves 1080p30 with this option; that is vendor documentation, not an independent test of this YouTube workflow. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Set YouTube’s output profile and ingest details

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe every 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes, and progressive scan with square pixels. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are YouTube’s specifications and recommendations; they do not guarantee your Pi’s build can encode every listed codec in real time. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable bitrate range for your chosen resolution; do not guess a bitrate from another resolution or an old recipe.

Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan-Cooled Heavy-Duty Aluminum Alloy Case
  • KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
  • SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
  • SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
  • IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
  • VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
  • Use the active settings: Open YouTube Live Control Room and use its current ingest configuration and stream key. Do not assume a single fixed endpoint applies to every account or session.
  • Prefer secure ingest: YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation describes available protocol options: FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation.
  • Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, terminal recording, or public repository. Avoid placing it in command history that other users can read; use an appropriately protected local configuration or environment mechanism.
  • Match capacity: Choose a bitrate within YouTube’s current guidance and below the stable upload capacity available to the Pi, leaving headroom for network variation. Prefer wired Ethernet where practical.

FFmpeg’s muxer and protocol options vary with the input, build, and chosen encoding path. Debian’s Bookworm FFmpeg manual is a useful command-line reference, but the installed Raspberry Pi OS build is authoritative for available encoders and flags: Debian Bookworm FFmpeg manual.

Build the command for your particular source

There is no single safe universal command for Bookworm: a Pi camera, V4L2 capture device, file, and network URL have different input syntax and may provide different streams. Construct the command in layers and validate each layer before adding the next.

  1. Make the input work by itself. Capture a short local sample or confirm FFmpeg can read the file or network source. For a Pi camera, use rpicam-vid and its documented capture or libav workflow; do not substitute legacy raspivid flags without confirming they exist and apply to your installed version.

    • PASSIVE & ACTIVE COOLING: The kit includes a heatsink with thermal stickers for easy application and if that this not enough you can also connect the pre-installed fan to keep the board cool in any use
    • CONVENIENT ACCESSORIES: The power supply features an inline on/off switch neoprene bag that holds and protects all the parts when not in use and the quick start guide is updated and written for Raspberry Pi 4
  2. Select video and audio intentionally. Check which streams are present. Choose compatible video/audio streams, or provide an audio input if the source has none and the broadcast requires sound. Avoid unnecessary scaling, frame-rate conversion, or filters until the basic path works.

  3. Choose copy or encode per stream. Stream copy avoids encoding cost when the input codec and stream parameters meet YouTube’s requirements. If conversion is required, choose an encoder actually listed by ffmpeg -encoders. Set the output profile to YouTube’s current codec, CBR, frame-rate, keyframe, and audio guidance. Do not assume a Pi can encode H.265 or AV1 in real time merely because YouTube accepts those codecs.

  4. Set real-time behavior and output. Add input options before each input and output options after the inputs. Mux to the format expected by the RTMP/RTMPS ingest, then use the endpoint and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Consult FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation for options supported by your version.

  5. Test privately before the event. Use an appropriate private or unlisted test, check moving video and representative audio, and review YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Test for long enough to reveal thermal, network, or encoding problems, not just whether the preview appears.

Do not copy a command from a different Pi generation or an older forum post and assume it is current. A Raspberry Pi forum post from 2022 describes one user’s experiment, but predates Bookworm and does not establish a universal supported setup: Raspberry Pi forum discussion.

Symptom Likely layers to check Next action
YouTube preview stays blank Capture/input, missing or incorrectly mapped streams, incompatible codec or mux, wrong ingest endpoint or key. Verify the source locally first; inspect FFmpeg’s input and output logs; confirm stream mapping and copy/encode choices; recheck the active Control Room endpoint and key.
FFmpeg rejects an option or reports an unknown encoder Command syntax or unsupported option/encoder in the installed build. Check ffmpeg -h and ffmpeg -encoders on the Pi. Replace flags only with options supported by that build, and keep input options before their input.
Video stutters or encoding falls behind CPU/encoder load, resolution, frame rate, filters, audio processing, or thermal conditions. Reduce resolution or frame rate, remove expensive filters, and investigate hardware H.264 only where the specific device and build support it. On Pi 5, account for software encoding; test its low-latency option only if lower frame latency matters.
Stream starts but buffers or drops Upload capacity, Wi-Fi variation, configured bitrate, or source/network instability. Compare a speed test with the configured bitrate, provide upload headroom, use wired networking where possible, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages during a representative test.
Picture works but audio is absent or wrong Source has no audio, audio input not selected, incorrect mapping, or unsupported audio format. Inspect the input streams, explicitly select the intended audio source, and use AAC or MP3 with YouTube’s stereo recommendations where applicable.

Plan for YouTube rules as well as technical stability

A technically valid live stream does not grant rights to the video or music being broadcast. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules before scheduling a long-running channel. Reused or repetitive material can raise separate monetization-policy concerns; streaming a file through a Pi does not change the content’s rights or policy status. See the copyright safety checklist as a practical review aid.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube loop rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not stream a live camera feed.
