The connection is an outbound push, so you do not need to open an inbound RTMP port. For a reliable setup, verify FFmpeg’s required codecs and RTMPS support, protect the stream key, test the actual video and audio, and confirm the instance can sustain your chosen encoding settings.
How the Lightsail-to-YouTube setup works
Lightsail provides the Linux server; FFmpeg reads or generates the audio/video and encodes it; YouTube Live receives the feed at the ingest URL associated with your stream key. AWS supports Linux distributions including Ubuntu and Debian, and you can administer a Lightsail instance through browser-based SSH or a standard SSH client. AWS Lightsail instance options
This tutorial covers the server and YouTube configuration. There is no single safe, copy-paste FFmpeg command for every reader: the input, installed FFmpeg build, codecs, endpoint, resolution, frame rate, and instance capacity all matter. Choose and test those against your actual system rather than assuming a given Lightsail plan can encode a particular profile continuously.
1. Create and secure a Lightsail Linux instance
- Create the VPS. In the AWS Lightsail console, choose Create instance, select a Linux/Unix image such as Ubuntu or Debian, choose the region and instance plan, configure networking, and create the instance. Follow AWS’s current Lightsail instance creation guide. Select capacity based on your input and planned encoding workload, then validate performance; no plan-specific encoding benchmark is established here.
- Connect for administration. Use Lightsail’s browser-based SSH or an SSH client. Restrict inbound SSH access to your own source address where practical.
- Review the firewall. Lightsail’s IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules are separate and govern inbound connections to the public IP. Outbound traffic is allowed by default. Because FFmpeg pushes the stream out to YouTube, do not open an inbound RTMP port for this workflow. See AWS’s Lightsail firewall documentation.
- Decide whether you need a fixed IP. The default public IPv4 address can change after an instance is stopped and restarted. Attach a static IPv4 if you rely on a persistent address for administration or an external reference; it is not required for YouTube to receive an outbound stream. AWS explains the lifecycle and setup in its static IP guide.
2. Install FFmpeg and verify the build
Install FFmpeg using the package manager and repository appropriate for the Linux image you selected. Package versions and enabled features can vary by distribution and repository, so do not assume that an installation command or a particular binary supports the codecs and protocols your stream needs.

Before configuring the stream, verify that the installed FFmpeg build supports:
- The input format or demuxer for your video and audio source.
- The video and audio encoders you intend to use, such as H.264 and AAC.
- The output protocol you plan to use: RTMP or, preferably when supported, RTMPS.
Check the installed binary’s own help and capability listings, and test a short run before relying on it for an event. If RTMPS is unavailable, do not describe an RTMP connection as encrypted; confirm the available options with your installed build and the endpoint information in YouTube Live Control Room.

3. Get the YouTube ingest URL and protect the key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the server or ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Enter those values in your FFmpeg output configuration; use the exact endpoint information displayed in the control room rather than guessing an RTMPS path.
- Keep the key private. YouTube treats it like a password: do not commit it to source control, expose it in public logs, or share it. If it is revealed, reset it in YouTube Live settings. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which protects the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL. Its guidance says, “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the RTMPS URL provided by Live Control Room and confirm your FFmpeg build can connect to it. YouTube: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS
4. Match FFmpeg output to YouTube’s current guidance
For a broadly compatible setup, H.264 video with AAC audio and constant bitrate (CBR) is a practical starting point. Set the output to match your source, frame rate, resolution, encoding capacity, and YouTube’s current encoder table. YouTube’s Help page, current when accessed on October 3, 2026, lists these H.264 recommended video bitrates:

| Output profile | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a promise that a particular Lightsail instance can encode or deliver them reliably. YouTube’s table also gives codec-specific recommendations for other combinations; check the live encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution page for your exact codec and output profile rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate mode: Use CBR, as YouTube recommends.
- Audio: YouTube supports AAC or MP3. For stereo, its advanced settings list a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate.
- Frame rate and codecs: YouTube’s current guidance includes H.264, H.265, and AV1 and supports up to 60 fps. Confirm compatibility for the combination you choose and the encoders available in your FFmpeg build.
Higher output settings are not automatically better. If the source is lower resolution or the server cannot encode smoothly, choose a lower profile and verify it remains stable. Platform recommendations do not establish the sustained capacity of your instance.

5. Test the stream before depending on it
- Run a short test using the same source, resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, bitrate, and ingest method planned for the real stream.
- Check that YouTube’s preview appears and that both audio and moving video are present and synchronized.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. Watch for dropped frames, encoding warnings, or audio problems.
- Repeat the test after changing the instance, FFmpeg build, input, or output profile. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring health during the event. YouTube encoder guidance
A successful short test is useful evidence for that configuration, but it does not by itself prove long-term capacity or uninterrupted operation. Monitor the live stream while it is running.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect to the ingest server | Confirm you copied the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check outbound connectivity, and verify the FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol. If using RTMPS, confirm its TLS/protocol support rather than substituting an assumed endpoint. |
| YouTube receives no video or reports an encoding issue | Check that the input is being read, the selected encoder is present in the build, and the output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s current guidance. |
| Video stutters or frames are dropped | Check instance load and network behavior during a representative test. Reduce the output profile if the server cannot sustain the selected encoding settings; no specific plan’s sustained capacity is established here. |
| Video appears but audio is missing or problematic | Confirm the source contains audio, that an audio stream is mapped and encoded, and that the chosen AAC or MP3 settings are compatible with YouTube’s current requirements. |
| SSH or another inbound connection stops working | Review the relevant Lightsail inbound firewall rule and whether the instance’s public IPv4 changed after stop/start. IPv4 and IPv6 rules are independent; a static IPv4 can preserve the address across that lifecycle. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Reset the key in YouTube Live settings, update the FFmpeg configuration with the replacement, and avoid printing secrets in logs or committing them to a repository. |
Copyright and YouTube channel rules
A technically valid FFmpeg feed does not grant rights to the video or music it carries. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. The supplied YouTube settings source explains configuring a stream but does not establish that any particular content qualifies for monetization or complies with reused-content rules; assess those policies separately for your channel and material.
