You can publish a Raspberry Pi video source to YouTube with FFmpeg over Wi-Fi, but the command depends on whether your input is a Pi camera, USB camera, IP camera, or media file. The basic chain is: capture or open the source, copy compatible streams or encode them, send them to YouTube’s ingest URL with your private stream key, then check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages.
There is no universal ready-to-run command: input syntax, codecs, audio, FFmpeg build, Pi model, and YouTube endpoint all matter. Use the steps below to build and rehearse a setup for your specific equipment.
What you need before starting
- A Raspberry Pi with Raspberry Pi OS and a working camera, network-camera URL, or local media file.
- FFmpeg built with the input and output support your source and chosen publishing method require. If encoding, the build also needs the encoder you intend to use.
- A working Wi-Fi connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate.
- A YouTube channel that can start live streams, plus a stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A plan for audio. Confirm whether your source provides an audio track or whether you need to supply one separately.
Record the exact Pi model, Raspberry Pi OS version, camera software, and output of ffmpeg -version. These details help explain differences between guides and make encoder or input errors easier to diagnose.
Choose the right input workflow
Pi camera
A Pi camera does not necessarily appear to FFmpeg as a generic video device. A common workflow is to use Picamera2 to capture and encode video, then pass that output to FFmpeg for publishing. Raspberry Pi’s Picamera2 documentation covers H.264 encoding and bitrate controls, but it does not establish that every Pi can encode a particular resolution and frame rate in real time. If you use a pipe between a capture process and FFmpeg, you must establish how the video is framed and where audio comes from; there is no single pipe command that applies to all camera setups.

USB camera
Check how your installed OS exposes the camera and which formats it supports before choosing FFmpeg input options. A camera may provide a format that FFmpeg can copy or one that must be converted. Do not assume that a device path, pixel format, frame rate, or audio input is the same across USB cameras.
RTSP or other IP camera
Use the camera’s supported network-stream URL as the input and confirm that the Pi can reach it over the local network. Some IP cameras already send H.264. If the video and audio codecs and parameters are suitable for YouTube, stream-copying can avoid the Pi’s encoding workload. The camera-to-Pi connection and the Pi-to-YouTube connection are separate network paths; a timeout on one does not establish that the other has failed.
Local media file
Use the file as FFmpeg’s input and check its video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and duration. A file can be published as a live feed, but a finite file ends when playback finishes unless you deliberately configure a looping workflow. A file’s existing codecs may be copied only if they fit the output requirements.

Set YouTube’s stream settings
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Start with YouTube’s automatic resolution detection unless you have a reason to use a custom key or settings workflow.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as password-like: do not paste a populated command into a public forum, video description, or shared log. Reset the key in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
- Use the endpoint supplied for the stream rather than copying an old example URL. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS for encoder streaming and recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Prefer RTMPS when the supplied endpoint and your FFmpeg build support it.
See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder and managing live stream settings for the current Live Control Room workflow.
Choose stream-copy or encoding
Stream-copy compatible media when possible
If the input already has compatible H.264 video and AAC audio, and the stream’s parameters fit your target, test stream-copying first. Copying avoids a video re-encode and can reduce CPU load. It does not convert an incompatible codec, change resolution, or make an unstable source stable, so verify the resulting feed in YouTube’s preview and health indicators.
Encode only when conversion is needed
If the source format is unsuitable, select an encoder supported by your installed FFmpeg build and Pi hardware. Set a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate the device can sustain continuously. Hardware and software encoder availability varies by Pi, operating system, and FFmpeg build; a successful command on another setup is not proof that yours can keep up.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. For a straightforward H.264/AAC setup, YouTube recommends these video bitrates:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Pi can encode in real time or that your Wi-Fi can sustain the upload. YouTube also specifies 128 Kbps stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate in its encoder guidance. Check your source and encoder settings rather than assuming audio is present or correctly configured.
YouTube recommends testing before the stream. Consult its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the latest supported guidance.

Build the FFmpeg publishing command
The following is a schematic only, not a verified ready-to-run command. Replace the input options and source with the syntax for your device or file, select either compatible stream-copy options or suitable encoding options, and paste the ingest URL and key from your own Live Control Room. Do not share the command with a real key in it.
ffmpeg [input options] -i [encode or stream-copy options] -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv '[YouTube-provided ingest URL plus private stream key]'
FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation describes the protocol and URL options. The appropriate output format, codecs, timestamp handling, audio mapping, and endpoint depend on your actual input and YouTube’s current settings. A silent video source, for example, may require an audio track to be added or mapped; do not assume audio will appear automatically.

Test the Wi-Fi path before going live
- Test upload capacity from the Pi’s actual location and Wi-Fi connection, not only from another device or a different room. A peak speed-test result does not establish reliable sustained capacity.
- Allow headroom beyond the selected video bitrate for audio and bitrate variation. YouTube’s guidance is to make sure the outbound connection is sufficient for the stream bitrate.
- Run a rehearsal at the intended settings with movement and sound similar to the planned stream. Watch for drops, delayed or missing audio, and YouTube stream-health warnings.
- Check YouTube’s preview and health messages while FFmpeg is running. A connection by itself does not prove the selected codec, audio, resolution, or bitrate is suitable.
- If possible, compare with Ethernet as a diagnostic. It is not required, but a stable wired comparison can help isolate a Wi-Fi problem.
YouTube’s streaming tips advise testing and monitoring the stream and ensuring outbound capacity is enough for the chosen bitrate.
Troubleshoot by following the signal path
No video or audio appears locally
- Confirm that the camera is connected, enabled, and reachable, or that the file path is correct.
- Check the source’s supported formats and the FFmpeg input options for that camera or media type.
- Verify that an audio track exists or that a separate audio source is configured and mapped.
FFmpeg reports errors or cannot keep up
- Check the FFmpeg version and whether the build includes the input format, protocol, and encoder you selected.
- Confirm the source streams FFmpeg detects and whether the command is copying or encoding them as intended.
- If encoding is too demanding, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, or test stream-copying when the source is already compatible.
YouTube does not receive the feed or reports poor health
- Verify that you copied the current server URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream, and that the key remains private.
- Separate the two network checks: confirm local camera reachability to the Pi, then confirm the Pi’s outbound connection to YouTube.
- Check Wi-Fi stability and sustained upload capacity at the Pi’s location. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings.
- Inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages for codec, audio, resolution, or bitrate issues; a successful connection alone is not enough.
