You can keep a YouTube stream running without drawing power from your home’s mains, but you cannot run powered equipment without electricity altogether. For a live camera feed, the camera, encoder and internet equipment still need power—typically from a correctly sized off-grid solar-and-battery system. For prerecorded video, a cloud service can play the stream without keeping your home computer on.
Choose the approach that fits your stream

If the content must be live from a camera, a cloud service for prerecorded video is not a substitute for powering that camera and its connection. If the goal is a continuous channel made from recordings, cloud playback may eliminate the need to leave a home PC running.
How to size an off-grid power system
Do not choose a panel or battery based only on the words “24/7.” First calculate the energy use of the complete setup, then account for storage, conversion losses and the sunlight available at the site. 1. Inventory and measure every device
List the camera, computer or encoder, router, modem or cellular equipment, and any accessories that must stay on. Record each device’s actual wattage and hours of operation per day. A device’s label can provide a starting estimate, but measuring its real draw is better where possible: power use can vary with workload, display state and, for cellular equipment, signal conditions.

2. Calculate the daily energy load
For each device, multiply watts by operating hours to get watt-hours per day. Add the results for all devices. A device that draws a steady 1 watt for 24 hours uses 24 watt-hours per day; calculate with the measured draw rather than assuming the nameplate value is constant. Include the router and modem, and include inverter consumption if your equipment needs AC power.
3. Decide how long the battery must carry the stream
Choose how many hours or days the equipment should continue operating when solar generation is low or unavailable. Match that autonomy requirement to the battery’s usable capacity, not just its headline capacity. Battery storage supplies energy after sunset or during disruptions; it does not generate replacement energy on its own. 4. Size solar generation for the site and season
Panel output varies with time of day, weather, season and shading. Cloud cover, dust, haze, rain, snow and dirt can also reduce generation. Plan for the site’s relevant low-sun season and conditions rather than relying on a sunny-day estimate. Panels recharge storage only when there is enough solar input; panels alone cannot provide overnight power. Equipment that can use the battery system’s native DC output may avoid some conversion losses where suitable, but the amount of loss depends on the actual equipment and design.
There is no reliable universal panel or battery size for a 24/7 YouTube stream. A suitable design depends on device loads, location, seasonal sunlight, connection type, required cloudy-weather autonomy and tolerance for interruption. Without those inputs, a specific capacity or continuous-runtime promise would be guesswork.

Set up the YouTube stream and plan for long runs
YouTube’s live streaming tips say a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to livestream. YouTube describes mobile, webcam and encoder routes; for a locally produced feed, an encoder connects to YouTube Live using the stream URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions, since interface labels and workflows can change.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential. Do not share it publicly; anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Monitor stream quality. YouTube advises continuous monitoring. For an off-grid setup, also make a plan to detect power or internet loss and respond to it.
- Check archive and restart behavior. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish how a longer 24/7 stream will be archived, whether it will keep one watch page, or how a particular setup will restart. Confirm the behavior for your configuration rather than assuming one uninterrupted permanent archive.
For prerecorded video, let the stream run in the cloud
YouTube’s encoder help page lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. OneStream Live’s help center also describes continuous streaming of prerecorded material and says its 24/7 feature requires an Enterprise plan; that plan detail is vendor-reported and should be confirmed with the provider. Troubleshoot common interruptions
- The stream stops when the computer is off: A locally encoded live feed depends on the computer or encoder staying powered. Use a suitable off-grid supply for local equipment, or use a cloud workflow if the content is prerecorded.
- The battery runs out overnight: Compare measured daily load with usable battery capacity and the intended hours without solar generation. Revisit both storage and the solar input; panels cannot replenish a battery when sunlight is unavailable.
- Actual runtime is shorter than expected: Check the real draw of every device, including network equipment and inverter consumption. Device loads may differ from label ratings or change with workload and signal conditions.
- Solar input is inadequate: Reassess shading, season and local weather, and account for dirt, haze, rain or snow. Do not size the system from ideal-sun assumptions alone.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Check channel verification and whether the channel has a live-streaming restriction from the preceding 90 days. Confirm the encoder is using the correct stream URL and protected stream key.
- A long stream is missing an expected archive or watch page: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. Verify the archive and restart workflow for the longer configuration you intend to use.
- The feed is live, but the content may not be suitable: Use material you have the rights to stream and review YouTube’s current policies before running a continuous broadcast. A continuous format does not itself establish that you have permission to use copyrighted material.
What to decide before buying equipment
For a trustworthy off-grid recommendation, establish the content type, measured wattage for every device, site location and seasonal solar conditions, connection type, desired cloudy-weather autonomy and acceptable interruption risk. Until those are known, no specific panel size, battery capacity or uninterrupted runtime can be responsibly promised.
