To run a YouTube radio stream with multiple lofi playlists, combine the tracks and playlist blocks in an encoder or automation service, then send that continuous audio-and-video feed to a YouTube live event. A YouTube playlist organizes videos for viewers; it does not switch playlists inside an uninterrupted live broadcast.
How a multi-playlist YouTube radio stream works
YouTube supplies the live event, ingest URL, stream key, audience page, and live controls. The encoder or automation system supplies the program: it plays the tracks, handles transitions, and sends the resulting feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes sending a stream through encoder software or hardware, while its Live Control Room settings cover the event itself. There is no native multi-playlist rotation recipe in the reviewed YouTube guidance. To switch between sets of lofi tracks without ending the live broadcast, configure the software generating the feed to play those sets in the order and pattern you want. Adding several playlists to YouTube does not, by itself, turn them into a continuous live radio stream.
Clear the music rights before you build the stream
You are responsible for having the rights needed for both the live broadcast and any archive. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” YouTube livestream terms.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If its systems identify a match, YouTube may show a warning or placeholder image, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption: the relevant rights holder may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Resolve that with the rights holder before going live, and make sure the permission covers the archive as well as the live use. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams.
Set up the channel and the lofi program
1. Check that the channel can livestream
YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before your planned launch. 2. Arrange the tracks and playlist blocks in your encoder
Choose an encoder or automation tool that can create the full outgoing audio-and-video feed. Arrange the lofi tracks and sets there, not just in YouTube’s playlist interface. Decide how tracks will transition, whether a visual loop accompanies the audio, and what happens when a set ends. The YouTube guidance cited here establishes encoder-based streaming but does not prescribe a particular multi-playlist configuration; confirm that your chosen tool supports the rotation you need.
3. Create the live event and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow.
- Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your event.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming picture and sound in the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast. Use the preview to catch a wrong source, silence, unexpected transitions, or other feed problems. 4. Test continuity, bandwidth, and recovery
For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends preparing the encoder stream at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Its streaming tips recommend keeping upload capacity 20% above the stream bitrate. Test with the actual program and connection, check the preview, and decide how you will respond if the feed or connection drops. Monitor stream quality while live. 5. Set archive and event controls intentionally
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Live Control Room offers controls such as DVR and auto-start/auto-stop, depending on the stream setup. Check the current event settings when scheduling, and decide whether the archive should remain available; having permission for the live music does not automatically establish permission for a replay. Choose local encoding or a cloud service
With local encoding, a computer runs the software and sends the feed to YouTube. It gives you control over track order, transitions, and visuals, but the computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. A mini PC is optional; YouTube’s guidance does not establish a required computer model or minimum specification.

A cloud service can send prerecorded video to YouTube without relying on a home computer staying on. YouTube’s encoder help page mentions Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming prerecorded videos. That mention does not establish Gyre’s current availability, playlist-rotation features, or fit for any particular music-rights arrangement, so verify those details directly before choosing a provider. Troubleshoot common problems
- The stream plays only one set of tracks: The playlist rotation belongs in the encoder or automation system. Check its queue, rotation rules, and end-of-set behavior; YouTube playlists alone do not create a multi-playlist live feed.
- YouTube shows a copyright warning or interrupts the stream: Check the matched material and your rights for the live use and archive. If you are licensed, contact the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license does not guarantee that automated matching will not interrupt the broadcast.
- The Live Control Room does not show an incoming feed: Confirm the encoder is running and that its stream URL and stream key match the event. Re-enter the key privately if necessary, then check the preview again before going live.
- The stream is unstable or loses quality: Check the encoder’s connection and the available upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the stream bitrate; test before the event and monitor quality while broadcasting.
- The first broadcast cannot be enabled yet: Confirm channel verification and eligibility, including the absence of a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The archive is missing or behaves differently than expected: Check the event’s archive, DVR, and auto-start/auto-stop settings. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; longer streams are outside that stated automatic-archive rule.
