To run a YouTube radio stream in Docker, make your audio and visual media available inside a container, use FFmpeg to encode and mux them in real time, then send the output to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown for your YouTube broadcast. Docker packages the process and its dependencies; it does not provide the media, guarantee a stable connection, or keep a failed stream healthy by itself.
How the stream gets from your files to YouTube
The signal path is: source media → FFmpeg inside Docker → encoded audio/video over RTMPS → YouTube Live. You need media that FFmpeg can read, an FFmpeg build with the codecs your output requires, and the current ingest details for the specific YouTube broadcast.
A radio-style YouTube stream still needs a video output. If your source is audio-only, choose a visual such as a still image or looped artwork and configure FFmpeg to produce a valid audio-and-video stream. The image choice is part of your production; it is not supplied by Docker or YouTube.

Copy the ingest server address and stream key shown for that broadcast. Use those current, account-specific values instead of relying on a hard-coded endpoint from an old example. YouTube’s LiveStreams documentation describes primary and backup ingestion addresses, but the values shown for your stream are the operational reference: LiveStreams.
-
Keep the key secret. Do not put a real key in a public example, Dockerfile, source repository, or shell command saved in shared history. Supply it at runtime using a secret mechanism supported by your Docker host or deployment platform.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content and documents the endpoint and application-path requirements, using port 443: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS. Its encoder guidance also recommends RTMPS for a typical YouTube Live stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Prepare a Docker container
Make the inputs available
Use an FFmpeg image or build an image that contains the FFmpeg version, encoders, and any fonts or artwork your production needs. Mount media into the container; mounting source files read-only is a sensible way to prevent the streaming process from changing them. Set a working directory or use explicit absolute paths so the command can find every input.
There is no single verified Docker image or Compose configuration that fits every source and host. Check that the image actually includes the codecs you intend to use, and adapt volume mounts, environment variables, and secret handling to your deployment target.
Pass credentials and supervise the process
Inject the stream key through your platform’s supported secret facility. Avoid baking it into an image layer or placing it in a command that may be recorded in shell history. Restrict access to container logs and deployment configuration if they could expose credentials.
A Docker restart policy can restart a process after it exits, but it cannot repair a wrong key, unreadable or exhausted media, insufficient upstream bandwidth, rights restrictions, or a broken input. For unattended operation, decide how you will detect failures and alert on them; container restart behavior is only one part of supervision.

Choose FFmpeg settings for the source and broadcast
Use explicit input paths and stream mappings when a file or playlist has multiple audio or video tracks. The correct input flags depend on whether you are reading one file, a playlist, a network stream, or live audio. Real-time pacing and looping are appropriate only when the source and intended continuous broadcast call for them; FFmpeg option order and loop behavior depend on the input type. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for input/output option behavior.
For the output, deliberately choose an encoder, bitrate, frame rate, pixel format, audio format, and muxing format compatible with your selected YouTube ingest method. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends keyframes every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube’s recommendations, checked October 3, 2026—not a guarantee of picture or sound quality.
Select video bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one number to every stream. Upload bandwidth must also be sufficient for the outgoing stream; encoding settings cannot compensate for an unstable or undersized connection. The table and other encoder requirements are on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Illustrative command shape for a looped file
The following is a command pattern, not a tested, universal Docker recipe. It assumes a prerecorded file, a visual track in that file, and an RTMPS URL assembled from the current server address, application path, and secret key from YouTube Studio. Replace every example value, choose supported encoders, and verify the required URL structure for your broadcast and FFmpeg build.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /media/radio.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This example illustrates intent, not copy-and-run settings. Set the keyframe interval in frames to match the target frame rate and YouTube’s two-second recommendation; do not exceed a four-second interval. Replace the video bitrate and buffer values with values appropriate to your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. Confirm that the container’s FFmpeg build has the named encoder and that the output format suits the selected ingest endpoint. The -re and -stream_loop options shown are for this prerecorded-file pattern; do not apply them blindly to a live input, network source, or every playlist setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFFmpeg supports multiple protocols and URL forms, so verify RTMP/RTMPS syntax against the endpoint you are using and the build in your image: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation. YouTube requires an application path as part of RTMPS ingestion; keep server address and stream name/key conceptually distinct when Studio presents them separately.
Audio-only sources and playlists
For audio-only input, add an appropriate visual input, such as a still or looped artwork, and map that video together with the audio into the outgoing stream. Confirm the final codecs and container are accepted by the selected ingest method. For a playlist, decide how tracks should advance, whether gaps are acceptable, and what should happen when a file is missing or ends. A playlist does not automatically provide smooth transitions, reliable metadata, or recovery; test those behaviors with your actual files.

Test and operate the broadcast
-
Start with a private or unlisted broadcast so you can check the result without presenting an unverified stream publicly.
-
Use a representative test with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

Check the Live Control Room preview for the expected image and audible sound, then inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
-
Read the container’s FFmpeg output for missing input files, encoder errors, failed connections, or premature source endings. Confirm that your actual source continues for the intended duration.
-
Before leaving the stream unattended, arrange process supervision and alerting. Test what happens after an input ends, a network interruption occurs, or the container exits.
Container restarts do not solve invalid media, incorrect credentials, inadequate upstream bandwidth, or copyright and other rights issues. Make sure you have the rights needed to stream the music and visuals you use, and review YouTube’s applicable policies before broadcasting.

| Method | Practical distinction | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | YouTube recommends it for ordinary live content; it uses a secure RTMP connection and the broadcast’s endpoint and application path. | Use as the default for a conventional encoder-to-YouTube workflow. |
| HLS | Uses HTTPS and media playlists with muxed audio/video and segment/file rules. YouTube notes its segment-based approach usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. | Consider only when your workflow supports YouTube’s specific HLS packaging and latency trade-off. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide. |
| DASH | YouTube documents it as another ingestion protocol; setup and packaging differ from the RTMPS command pattern. | Use only if your encoder and workflow are designed for YouTube’s DASH requirements. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison. |
For protocol details and comparisons, consult YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison. Do not treat HLS or DASH as a drop-in replacement for the RTMPS URL in the example.
Common problems and fixes
-
YouTube does not receive a signal: Check the current Studio server address, application path, key, and RTMPS support in your FFmpeg build. Keep the endpoint and key separate while checking them, and regenerate or replace a leaked key through YouTube Studio.
-
The container starts but FFmpeg exits: Inspect logs for an incorrect media path, unavailable encoder, malformed option, or unsupported input. Verify the file is mounted at the path used by the command and that the image includes the required codec.

Video appears but audio is missing: Check stream mappings and confirm the source contains the mapped audio track. For audio-only media, verify that both the audio and chosen visual input are mapped into the output.
-
The stream freezes or drops: Compare the outgoing bitrate with available upload capacity, inspect the network and FFmpeg connection errors, and confirm that the source itself has not stopped. Restarting the container cannot fix persistent bandwidth or source problems.
-
YouTube reports poor stream health: Review the selected codec, constant bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution-specific bitrate, and audio settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Then retest with representative content.
-
The stream stops when a file ends: Confirm that the intended input is actually looped or that the playlist advances as designed. Looping behavior varies by input type; test end-of-file handling before relying on it unattended.

The broadcast has sound but no suitable picture: Add or correct a visual input, map it to the output, and check the preview. A YouTube radio stream still needs a compatible video output for this setup.
