The PC must stay powered on and connected while it streams. Test its upload and encoding performance before relying on it for a long broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast.
- A spare PC that can run OBS and remain powered on and connected to the internet for the length of the stream.
- OBS Studio, available at no charge as open-source software and listed by YouTube as an encoder.
- A visual for the broadcast, such as a station image, plus an audio source and permission to broadcast all music and other program material.
- Enough upload capacity for the bitrate you choose, with headroom for normal network variation.
OBS’s System Requirements page cautions that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; there is no universal spare-PC model or CPU benchmark that guarantees a 24/7 stream.
Set up and test the radio stream
1. Enable YouTube live streaming
Open YouTube Studio and follow the channel’s live-streaming setup flow. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Do not leave setup until the moment you intend to go live.
2. Configure OBS
Install and open OBS Studio, then run its Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting configuration for the PC and connection. Choose a conservative output that the machine and upload connection can sustain; a static radio visual generally does not need elaborate motion or effects.

3. Add the image and audio sources
- In OBS, create a scene and add an image or another suitable visual source. A radio-style stream still sends video, so do not expect an audio-only feed to create a live YouTube broadcast.
- Add the correct audio input or playback source for the music, microphone, or other program audio you intend to transmit.
- Play representative audio and check the OBS audio meters. If no signal appears, select the intended input or playback device manually in the source settings.
- Keep the scene simple and confirm that the visual is visible in the OBS preview while the audio meters respond.
4. Create the broadcast and connect OBS
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings, or use YouTube integration if OBS offers it for your setup. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
5. Choose settings, then test
YouTube recommends selecting a quality that is reliable on your connection and checking upload capacity with a speed test. Its current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 4 Mbps for 480p30; these are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or older PC will sustain them. Start with the OBS wizard’s recommendation, then adjust downward if the stream health or encoding performance is unstable.

Before a long broadcast, run a few minutes of representative audio and movement. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and check that OBS is not reporting a persistent encoding or connection problem. The OBS Quick Start documentation and System Requirements page are dated August 25, 2021; those dates are documentation dates, not performance tests of your PC.
6. Start the stream and monitor it
Start streaming from OBS and confirm that the preview reaches the Live Control Room and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream before you begin the program in earnest. Keep the PC awake, OBS running, and network connection available. A spare PC does not become a managed 24/7 service simply because OBS can encode a stream: power loss, operating-system restarts, software errors, or an internet outage can interrupt it.

7. End or archive deliberately
End the broadcast from the encoder and YouTube workflow when the program is finished. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that automatic archive condition for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer; plan separately if retaining a recording matters.

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A detected match can lead YouTube to replace the live image, warn you, interrupt the stream, or terminate it.

Use music and other material you own or are authorized to broadcast on YouTube live. Buying a track, having a subscription, or being able to play it personally does not by itself establish live-stream rights. If a rights holder has licensed the material for your channel, ask whether the channel needs to be added to that holder’s Content ID allowlist; licensed content may still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted.
When a spare PC is the right choice
OBS is a no-charge way to run the encoder you already control, and it gives you direct control over the visual and audio mix. The trade-off is that the local PC, its power, and its internet connection must remain available, and you need to handle testing and recovery yourself. A cloud service or dedicated hardware may suit someone who wants managed continuous operation or does not want a PC running at home; neither option should be assumed to guarantee uninterrupted streaming. YouTube’s verified-encoder list includes OBS, cloud options such as Gyre and Upstream, and hardware such as AJA HELO Plus.
