You can run a YouTube radio stream from a Mac mini using OBS Studio: create a YouTube livestream, connect OBS with the stream URL and key, add your audio and visuals, then test the stream before going live. For unattended operation, plan for monitoring, music rights, reconnects, and YouTube’s archive limit; a Mac mini and encoder alone do not make a stream reliably 24/7.
Before you set up the stream
Check that the YouTube channel is eligible and that the Mac can run the current OBS release. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Identify whether the Mac mini uses an Intel or Apple Silicon processor and check its macOS version.
- Measure sustained upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate.
- Decide what audio source you will use and whether the broadcast will be a scheduled program or a long-running loop.
- Confirm that every track’s rights cover YouTube live transmission and any saved replay.
Install OBS Studio on the Mac mini
OBS Studio is free streaming software. The current OBS download page lists macOS 13 and newer and provides separate Intel and Apple Silicon installers. Choose the installer that matches the Mac’s processor; older OBS releases may support different macOS versions. Follow the OBS download page and Mac installation guide: open the downloaded disk image and move OBS into Applications.
Meeting OBS’s system requirements does not guarantee that a particular Mac mini can stream every combination of resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test the actual scene and settings you plan to use. The exact Mac mini generation and workload matter.

Create a YouTube livestream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create an encoder livestream, or schedule one if you want a watch page available in advance. The setup steps are in YouTube’s encoder livestream guide.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. The URL is the destination; the key identifies the stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details. If you use a custom server option, enter the URL and key in their corresponding fields.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event; do not show it in a screenshot or on stream.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room’s preview. Go live from the control room only after the preview and stream health look right.
Build a simple radio scene and route audio
A radio-style YouTube stream can pair the program audio with a still image, title card, or visualizer. In OBS, add a visual source to a scene and select an audio source appropriate to your playback setup. Watch the OBS audio mixer while audio plays: its meters should move, and a short test recording or unlisted test broadcast can confirm that viewers will hear the same mix.
Audio routing depends on the playback application and macOS setup. A system-audio workflow may need additional routing software, but there is no single universally correct driver or configuration for every Mac. Test the actual source, avoid capturing unintended sounds, and check for clipping or silence before the public broadcast.

Choose settings that your connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations as the reference for the selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs over RTMP(S), frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. For RTMP(S) audio, it lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS unless your workflow has a specific reason to use another supported transport.
- Rate control: Set the encoder to CBR.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and bitrate: Choose a combination supported by the YouTube recommendations and by your sustained upload connection. Higher is not automatically better for a radio program, particularly if a stable long session is the priority.
- Audio: Confirm the selected audio codec and bitrate, and listen to the test for level, balance, and dropouts.
Do not treat any preset as guaranteed for every Mac mini or internet connection. Test with audio and motion similar to the intended show, and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before relying on the configuration.

Test and monitor the broadcast
Before announcing the stream, run a realistic test. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend checking stream health and the preview. Verify that the event can be opened from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device, and confirm that the local recording is growing if you are making one.
- Listen for silence, clipping, unexpected system sounds, and audio that drifts out of sync.
- Check that the image or visualizer is present and that the encoder reports no persistent connection or dropped-frame problem.
- Watch the stream after it starts; a successful preview does not prove the stream will remain healthy unattended.
- For a stationary Mac mini, Ethernet may be a convenient option if the Mac and network equipment support it. Check the exact model, port or adapter needs, and cable route. YouTube’s general hardwiring guidance concerns playback devices, so Ethernet is not a guaranteed fix for upload problems.
Protect music rights and plan the archive
Use only music whose license or permission covers the intended live broadcast and any replay, including applicable territories and attribution requirements. YouTube warns that a livestream may be terminated after a copyright strike, and an archived completed stream can receive a Content ID claim. Keep documentation for the music you use and check each track’s terms; possession of an audio file does not itself grant streaming rights. YouTube Creator Music is documented as available to creators in the U.S. YouTube Partner Program, with expansion to non-U.S. YPP creators pending. Its licensing is track-specific; do not assume that a Creator Music license automatically covers continuous radio-style live use. Review the terms for each track in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s track licensing guidance.
Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy of a continuous broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends a local recording backup. For a 24/7 schedule, plan session rotations below that threshold, decide how breaks and new watch pages should work, and test local recording independently. Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm the event is the one selected in Live Control Room, the stream URL and key were copied correctly, and OBS is actively sending. Keep the key private while checking it.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Verify the channel and check for a live restriction. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for enablement.
- Stream health is poor or the feed disconnects: Check sustained upload capacity against the chosen bitrate, lower resolution or bitrate if needed, and retest. Confirm RTMPS, CBR, and the recommended keyframe interval.
- Viewers cannot hear the program: Check that the intended source is selected in OBS, that mixer meters respond, and that the source is not muted. Test the exact playback and routing setup before restarting the public stream.
- OBS works but YouTube does not retain the full replay: The stream may have exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive boundary. Use shorter sessions and a local recording backup.
- A music claim or interruption occurs: Recheck the live and replay permissions for the specific track and territory. Remove or replace material for which you cannot establish the necessary rights.
