To keep a YouTube playlist stream running after you log out of your Indian Linux server, run the encoder on that server inside a named tmux session, detach from the session, and then close SSH. The encoder can continue sending video while the server, input files, network connection, and YouTube ingest remain healthy. tmux protects against an SSH disconnect; it does not restart a crashed encoder or survive a server reboot.
What logging out does—and does not—stop
Closing your laptop’s SSH window disconnects your terminal client. It does not necessarily stop a process that is still running on the remote server. That is different from stopping the encoder, ending the broadcast in YouTube Studio, or rebooting the server. The encoder must remain active on the server and send video to YouTube using the stream URL and key configured for the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes that URL-and-key workflow.
The server’s location in India does not, according to the official setup guidance covered here, create a special India-only configuration requirement. Use the current ingest details displayed for your stream in YouTube Studio.
Prepare the playlist stream on the server
Check the encoder and playlist
Make sure the encoder and the playlist’s media files are available to the same Linux account that will run the stream. Playlist looping is specific to the encoder and the way its input is configured; there is no universal loop command that can safely be prescribed without knowing those details. Test the playlist before leaving it unattended and confirm that it repeats as intended.

Get the current YouTube stream details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream’s settings into the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, leave it in public shell history, or expose it in logs.
- If your encoder supports it, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube defines RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Use the current displayed URL rather than one copied from an old tutorial. If SSL negotiation fails, check that the URL uses
rtmps, verify the host, and consider port443as described in YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Keep the encoder running after SSH logout with tmux
- Connect to the Indian server as the Linux user who has access to the encoder and playlist files.
- Start a named tmux session, for example:
tmux new -s youtube-playlist. - Start your encoder and playlist command inside that session. The exact command depends on the encoder and input format; first verify that it loops correctly and uses the YouTube URL and key above.
- Wait for the encoder to connect and check that the broadcast is receiving video and audio.
- Detach from tmux by pressing
Ctrl-b, thend. This leaves the session running on the server. - Only after detaching, close SSH. Later, reconnect as the same server user and run
tmux attach -t youtube-playlistto inspect the session and encoder output.
tmux preserves the terminal session across a client disconnect; it is not health monitoring. A session can remain open even if the encoder has failed, so a running tmux session alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving valid video or audio.
Verify the broadcast before leaving it unattended
Check the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio, then follow the scheduled-stream flow and click Go live when the preview is ready. Also check the viewer-facing stream if possible. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that platform rule is not a guarantee that a stream will remain connected for that long. What to use when tmux is not enough

Using systemd is general Linux operational guidance, not a YouTube requirement. Configure the service deliberately, capture useful logs, and test both process-exit and reboot behavior before relying on it. Neither a service manager nor tmux can restore a failed input file, network path, or YouTube ingest connection by itself.
RTMPS or HLS?

HLS is a separate ingestion option, not a requirement for an ordinary playlist stream. Choose it only when its format support meets your needs and your encoder can meet YouTube’s documented constraints.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops or never appears
- SSH closes and the stream stops: You may have closed the terminal without detaching, or started the encoder outside tmux. Reconnect, start a named session, launch the encoder inside it, and detach with
Ctrl-bfollowed byd. - The tmux session exists but YouTube shows no video: The encoder may have exited or may not be sending valid media. Reattach with
tmux attach -t youtube-playlist, inspect its output, and check the Live Control Room preview and health indicators. - The playlist ends instead of repeating: Loop behavior depends on the encoder and input workflow. Review that tool’s documentation and test the exact playlist before relying on it unattended.
- RTMPS connection or SSL negotiation fails: Check the current RTMPS URL and hostname in Live Control Room, confirm the scheme is
rtmps, and consider port443using YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance. - The stream stops after a server reboot: tmux does not persist through reboot. If the encoder must start again automatically, configure and test a service manager such as systemd.
- You are automating broadcasts through the YouTube API: A basic encoder setup uses the stream URL and key; API automation that manages YouTube user data is a separate matter. Google’s OAuth 2.0 guidance says the Live Streaming API does not support service-account flow and the channel must be approved for Live.
