To keep a vMix YouTube playlist running after a Windows update, configure and save the vMix List input, verify YouTube’s encoder settings, then test the full reboot-and-recovery sequence on the actual computer. A looping playlist does not by itself restart vMix or reconnect the YouTube broadcast: vMix’s documented playlist controls handle playback, while Windows startup and stream recovery must be checked separately.
What can and cannot be automated
vMix’s List input can play video and audio files in sequence, advance automatically, and loop. That makes it suitable for continuous playlist playback, but it is not a time-of-day scheduler. vMix says it “does not support time of day scheduling” in its scheduling guidance, last updated January 17, 2025.
There are several distinct states to verify after a reboot: Windows is ready, vMix has opened the intended production, the playlist is advancing, vMix is connected to YouTube, YouTube marks the stream live, and the public watch page has picture and sound. Success at one stage does not establish success at the next.
Configure and save the playlist in vMix
- Create the List input. Add the video and audio files you want to play, or use an M3U playlist. See the vMix List input guide for the supported workflow.
- Check Auto Next and Loop. Auto Next is enabled by default according to the guide, but confirm it in the actual production. Enable Loop if the list should repeat after the final item.
- Test playback. Let the list advance through items and, if practical, reach the end to confirm that it loops as intended. Check the sound and video of the files you plan to use.
- Save the production. Save the configured vMix production so you can verify that the expected setup returns after restarting the application.
vMix’s Playlist and List features provide basic playback automation, including continuous looping; they do not provide clock-based scheduling. For scheduled input changes or transitions, test the exact production behavior rather than assuming the List will act as a time-of-day scheduler.

Set up the YouTube stream separately
- Configure the destination in vMix. Follow the vMix YouTube Live Stream Now instructions to create a stream or select an event. The documented flow includes pressing Start in vMix.
- Check the stream in YouTube Studio. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm the stream setup and stream key for the intended event. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Review Auto-start and Auto-stop. YouTube’s encoder stream settings have separate Auto-start and Auto-stop controls. Confirm their state for the specific stream in the Live Control Room stream settings. When enabled, these settings allow the encoder to control stream start and stop; they do not prove that Windows will reopen vMix or restore its session after a reboot.
Test recovery on the actual Windows computer
Do not treat a generic startup task or an application launch as proof that the broadcast will resume. The vMix startup options documentation describes application options, but does not establish a universal procedure for reopening the correct production, resuming playlist playback, authenticating, and reconnecting to YouTube after an update-triggered restart. Test the full sequence with your Windows build, vMix version, saved production, account state, and stream configuration.
- Run a controlled Windows restart or update restart when you can monitor the system and recover it if necessary.
- After Windows finishes restarting, confirm the expected user session is available and the network connection is working.
- Check whether vMix opened the intended saved production. Confirm the List is advancing and looping, rather than merely seeing the vMix application window.
- Check vMix’s stream status and the YouTube Live Control Room preview. If the event is not live, use the documented vMix Start flow and check the stream’s Auto-start behavior.
- Open the public YouTube watch page. Confirm that it is live and that the current playlist item has both picture and audible sound.
Record which of these stages completed on your own system. A Windows login, an open vMix window, or a moving playlist alone does not confirm the other stages.

Check the live stream and bandwidth
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom over the stream bitrate. Its live streaming tips also recommend checking the preview, confirming the stream is accessible, and monitoring audio and video quality. Treat those checks as part of the reboot test, not as a one-time setup step.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| What you see | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| vMix did not open after restart | Whether Windows reached the expected user session and whether the machine-specific startup setup launched vMix. | Open vMix manually, load the intended saved production, and note that automatic relaunch has not been established on this computer. |
| vMix opens, but the wrong production or no playlist appears | The production that loaded and whether it contains the intended List input. | Load the saved production you tested, then verify the List contents, Auto Next, and Loop. |
| The List is open but not advancing or looping | Auto Next, Loop, and whether the list has reached its final item. | Correct the List settings and test advancement and loop behavior before relying on unattended playback. |
| Playlist plays, but YouTube is not live | vMix stream status, the selected YouTube event, the stream key, and that stream’s Auto-start setting. | Use vMix’s Start action if needed, then check the Live Control Room preview and status. |
| YouTube says live, but viewers see no picture or hear no sound | The public watch page, current playlist item, and audio/video quality. | Check the preview and public page, then inspect the production’s output and source playback. |
| The stream starts but becomes unstable | Available upload bandwidth compared with the stream bitrate. | Check connection stability and aim for YouTube’s recommended 20% upload bandwidth headroom. |
Keep the content and channel in good standing
A technically continuous stream is not a substitute for rights to the material or compliance with YouTube’s rules. Use recordings you own or are authorized to stream, and check the applicable copyright safety checklist before leaving a playlist unattended. Review YouTube’s current channel and live-stream requirements for your account and content.
