A successful charity livestream starts with a donation route the charity accepts, a clear program and schedule, and a stream that has been tested before supporters arrive. Confirm where donations go and how they will be reported, make the campaign link easy to find, and plan how you will thank donors and share a verified outcome afterward.
1. Choose a cause and confirm how donations will reach it
Pick an organization and a reason for fundraising that you can explain sincerely. Before setting up a page, ask the charity which fundraising methods and platforms it accepts or prefers. Confirm who receives the donations, what receipts or reporting are available, how funds are transferred, and whether any fees apply.
Use a charity-approved campaign route when one is available rather than sending donations through a personal account. A personal route can make verification harder and create fee or transparency complications. A charity livestream guide created in 2015 offers useful planning principles, but its old list of platforms and fee claims should not be treated as current recommendations.
2. Choose the platform, event time, and campaign page
Choose a streaming venue that fits your audience and activity, then pick a date and duration you can host reliably. Consider audience time zones as well as your own availability. Create a campaign or event page with the cause, schedule, stream details, and a single, easy-to-share donation link.

JustGiving’s getting-started guidance describes selecting a charity or cause, setting up a stream using built-in overlays or an embedded stream, connecting a service, and promoting the fundraiser on social media. The British Red Cross’s Tiltify guide describes campaign pages with stream and social connections, donor rewards, schedules, goals, and shareable links. Features, eligibility, donation routing, and terms can change, so verify them directly with the service and charity before publishing.
Compare fundraising routes on the details that matter
- Charity acceptance: Does the organization approve or prefer this method?
- Donation flow: Is it clear who receives the donations and how they reach the charity?
- Receipts and reporting: Can you track contributions and confirm transfers or totals?
- Fees: Check current terms and determine the net amount the charity receives; do not rely on old fee comparisons.
- Stream integration: Does the service currently support your streaming setup, overlays, alerts, or progress widgets?
- Sharing: Can supporters find the fundraiser through one clear campaign link?
3. Build a program people can follow and join
Gaming is only one possible format. Choose an activity that suits you and your audience, such as creative arts, cooking, fitness, hobbies, or a special event. Give the stream a simple structure so viewers know what is happening and when.

Write a practical run of show
- Set a start, main activity, breaks, any guest appearances, and a clear close.
- Assign guest roles and plan transitions, especially if more than one person will host or operate the stream.
- Choose a few natural moments to explain the cause and point viewers to the donation page.
- Plan how viewers can participate, such as asking questions or choosing a suitable challenge.
- Set goals and incentives you can fulfill. If you offer a donor reward or promise an extra activity, make sure the time and resources are available.
4. Set up the stream and rehearse before event day
Test the stream before the fundraiser and rehearse any complicated transitions. Check that the stream is visible, the donation link works, any overlays display correctly, and the audio is understandable. A British Red Cross search-result excerpt recommends wired Ethernet for connection stability and identifies a headset microphone or a separate microphone and headset as audio options. That is a starting point, not a requirement to buy new equipment: use what you have and test it first.
Pre-event technical checklist
- Check the internet connection from the place you will stream; use wired Ethernet if practical.
- Test microphone level and clarity, then listen through headphones for unwanted noise or echo.
- Confirm the correct stream destination and that the stream appears as expected.
- Open the campaign page on another device or browser and test that its donation route and share link work.
- Check overlays, alerts, and progress tools if you are using them.
- Rehearse guest handoffs, scene changes, breaks, and the closing announcement.
- Keep a backup way to display or say the campaign link if an overlay or integration fails.
5. Promote the event before you go live
Share the date, time with time zone, schedule, cause, and campaign link in advance. Give people a preview of what will happen and post reminders through your social channels and relevant community spaces. WWF recommends promoting early and often and sharing teasers; JustGiving also points fundraisers to social promotion guidance. Tailor announcements to the communities you already reach rather than relying on a last-minute post.

6. Keep the purpose and donation route visible during the stream
Explain why you chose the cause and make the donation link easy to find throughout the event. Use an available overlay or progress tool if it helps, but also say where the link is so viewers who miss an on-screen prompt can still find it. Thank donors, share the fundraiser, and invite participation at natural breaks rather than interrupting every moment of the program.
WWF and the Red Cross recommend donor acknowledgments, goals, reminders, and collaboration as practical ways to support engagement. These are planning suggestions, not guarantees of fundraising results. If you set milestones or offer incentives, choose ones that fit the event and that you can deliver; if a goal is reached early, you can add a realistic next milestone.

7. Close the loop after the stream
Thank supporters after the event and confirm the amount raised and transfer status using the fundraising platform’s reporting and, where appropriate, the charity’s confirmation. Share a concise update explaining the verified outcome and what happens next. Keep records of the campaign link, final totals, and any outstanding transfer or reward commitments so you can resolve questions transparently.
