Before leaving the PC unattended, test the actual video, audio, connection and Live Control Room preview. A spare PC is not automatically capable of sustaining a particular stream, and neither OBS nor YouTube guarantees an uninterrupted overnight broadcast.
Before you start: check channel, PC and connection
Confirm YouTube live-stream access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the evening you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder-streaming instructions.
Check the spare PC
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic Windows requirements. Those are not a promise that a particular computer can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate: OBS cautions, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Test the exact machine and settings you intend to use. Measure upload capacity
Choose a stream bitrate your connection can sustain, leaving roughly 20% headroom between the total streaming bitrate and available upload bandwidth, as YouTube recommends. For example, if your measured upload capacity is 10 Mbps, do not plan a 10 Mbps stream; allow room for variation and other network traffic. YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Check its current encoder settings and run an upload test from the location where the PC will operate.

A wired Ethernet connection is an option if the PC and router support it and running a cable is practical. YouTube recommends a reliable connection; that does not mean every Wi-Fi setup is inadequate, and a cable cannot guarantee continuity.
Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Use the Manage tab to schedule a stream or select the event you have already created.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, then enter the URL and key if OBS asks for them. Depending on the OBS connection workflow, you may instead connect your account. Follow the fields shown in your version of OBS.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not show it in a screenshot or recording. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before the broadcast.
YouTube supports software encoders such as OBS as well as standalone hardware encoders; dedicated hardware is an option, not a stated requirement for this setup.
Add the prerecorded video in OBS
Loop one video file
- In OBS, select the scene you want to use. Under Sources, click + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, then select the video file stored on the PC. Keep the file in a location that will remain available; do not rely on a removable drive that might be disconnected.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties, then click OK.
- Check the OBS preview. Confirm the picture fits the canvas and that the source’s audio is present in the audio mixer. Play through the end of the file and confirm it starts again as expected.
OBS’s Media Source supports local files and a Loop setting. For several files, OBS also offers a separate VLC Video source with a playlist and Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed. See OBS Media Sources.

Choose video settings that fit the PC and connection
In OBS, use Settings > Video for the canvas and output resolution and frame rate, and Settings > Output for the encoder and bitrate controls. Available choices depend on the OBS version and encoder selected. Avoid assuming that the source file’s resolution is a safe streaming profile: the PC must decode the file and encode the outgoing stream, while the connection must carry it steadily.

These are YouTube’s figures for that profile, not a universal setting for every resolution, frame rate, encoder or connection. Consult the current YouTube bitrate and encoder settings table, then test your chosen profile against actual upload capacity and leave headroom.
Keep Windows awake overnight
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set the sleep timeout long enough that the PC will not sleep during the planned stream. The screen timeout is separate, so you can allow the display to turn off without putting the computer to sleep. See Microsoft’s power and sleep settings guidance; labels may differ on other Windows versions.

Keep the computer connected to power and avoid a Windows restart or update that could interrupt the session. These precautions do not protect a desktop or laptop from power loss, a crash or a network outage.
Test before you leave the PC
- Start the encoder early. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder two hours ahead and checking 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Treat these as preparation recommendations, not guarantees.
- Check Live Control Room. Start sending the feed from OBS and inspect the YouTube preview before making the event public. For a practice run, use unlisted visibility where appropriate.
- Verify the actual output. Listen for sound, watch for motion and confirm the video loops. Check that the event visibility and schedule are correct, then review the stream health indicators in Live Control Room.
- Observe a meaningful test period. A brief preview can catch setup errors, but cannot establish that the stream will run all night. Watch long enough to see the source play and loop, and monitor audio, video and stream health.
- Leave the system in its intended state. Confirm OBS is still sending, Windows will not sleep, the video file remains accessible, and the network is connected before you step away.
YouTube recommends ongoing monitoring of audio, video and stream health. An unattended overnight stream cannot be monitored in the same way, so understand that a disconnect or local PC problem may require someone to intervene.

End the broadcast and handle the archive
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” If a complete archive matters, keep the stream under 12 hours rather than assuming a longer broadcast will be saved in full. When the event is finished, end it in YouTube as appropriate, then stop streaming in OBS. See YouTube’s live-streaming archive guidance.

Use content you have permission to stream
Only stream video and audio you are entitled to use. YouTube requires streams to comply with its Community Guidelines and warns that trailer content must not infringe others’ rights; that trailer-specific warning is not a complete explanation of copyright rules for every kind of prerecorded material. Review YouTube’s encoder guidance and the applicable rules for your content before broadcasting. A looping format does not itself establish that you have the necessary rights.
Troubleshooting common overnight-stream problems
