You can broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event by running FFmpeg in a Docker container and sending its output to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The video was recorded earlier, but viewers encounter it as a live broadcast. This guide assumes you have permission to broadcast the media and that live streaming is enabled on your YouTube channel.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- A video file you are authorized to broadcast.
- Docker installed on the computer or host that will run the sender.
- An FFmpeg container image appropriate to your deployment. Choose and pin a specific image rather than relying on an unpinned tag; the command below is a template, not a tested image-specific command.
- A stable network connection with enough upload capacity for the selected video bitrate.
You do not need a capture card or physical encoder for an existing file: FFmpeg can read the file and send its audio and video to YouTube.
Create the YouTube Live event and get its credentials
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream, or open Manage to schedule one.
- Set the event title, audience, privacy, and other metadata. Check that the event is scheduled or public as intended.
- Open the stream settings in Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS URL YouTube displays when your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the ingest connection.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not put it in a Dockerfile, source repository, command that may be retained in shell history, or a public log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the runtime configuration.
Check the file and choose how FFmpeg will send it
Stream copy when the source is compatible
Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding: FFmpeg copies the input packets into the output. It uses less CPU, but only works when the file’s codecs and streams are compatible with YouTube ingest and the chosen output container. An MP4 filename alone does not establish compatibility.
Re-encode when compatibility or settings require it
If the source is incompatible, or you need to control resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframes, or audio format, encode the streams instead of copying them. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings as the authority; bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so there is no one rate that fits every file.

Run FFmpeg in Docker
Set the two environment variables in your protected runtime configuration or inject them through your deployment’s secret mechanism. Make sure the stream key does not appear in logs. Replace YOUR_PINNED_FFMPEG_IMAGE with the pinned image you selected. The example uses stream copy and the RTMPS URL/key arrangement; confirm that arrangement against the exact values shown in Live Control Room and verify RTMPS support in the image’s FFmpeg build.

Set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL to the server URL copied from YouTube and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY to the private key. The image must provide a shell and FFmpeg for this command form; image layouts and protocol support vary, so check the image documentation and FFmpeg build before relying on it.

The -re option belongs before -i because it is an input option. It reads the file at its native frame rate, pacing a file input for real-time output. Without rate limiting, FFmpeg can process a file faster than real time. The command is one pass: when the finite file reaches its end, the sender exits. It does not loop automatically.
Set encoder parameters for YouTube
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC only. Its recommended keyframe frequency is 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a successful stream.

Use the row that matches the output you actually send, and consult YouTube’s settings guidance for other resolutions and frame rates. Ensure the host’s sustained upload capacity can support the video and audio output; a connection that fluctuates near the target rate can cause instability. If re-encoding, set the encoder for CBR and configure a 2-second keyframe interval in the encoder’s own units. Do not copy a bitrate from one resolution, frame rate, or codec to another.
Start, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Run the container and open the event in Live Control Room.
- Wait for the incoming signal and preview. If there is no preview, use the troubleshooting checks below before making the event public.
- For a scheduled broadcast, starting FFmpeg does not necessarily publish the event. When the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room.
- When the broadcast should finish, end the event in Live Control Room, then stop the containerized sender if it is still running.
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.”

Protect the stream key in Docker
Do not bake the key into the image with Dockerfile ENV: Docker documents that ENV values persist in the resulting image. A Dockerfile ARG is a build-time value and is not available in the final container, but it is not a substitute for a runtime secret. Inject credentials at runtime using the secret facility for your deployment or a protected runtime configuration, limit who can inspect that configuration, and keep secrets out of logs. Secret handling differs across Docker and orchestration environments, so follow the mechanism documented for the one you use.
Troubleshoot common problems
No preview in Live Control Room
- Check that the stream URL and key match the current event; avoid using an old endpoint copied from a tutorial.
- Confirm that the host can reach the ingest endpoint and that the selected FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
- Review stream health in Live Control Room and inspect FFmpeg’s error output without exposing the key in captured logs.
Preview works, but viewers cannot see the event
For a scheduled stream, the operator may still need to click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. Check the event’s privacy and schedule settings as well.

YouTube rejects the video or playback is unstable
- Inspect the input streams with FFmpeg tooling and confirm that the output codecs and FLV muxing are compatible.
- If stream copy is incompatible, re-encode to a supported video and audio format.
- Use the bitrate, keyframe, frame-rate, and audio guidance for the actual resolution and codec being sent; verify that upload capacity is adequate.
The container exits when the video ends
That is expected for a one-pass finite file. If you intend to repeat the video, add an explicit looping design and test it with the selected FFmpeg build; looping changes the broadcast’s behavior and should not be assumed from the command shown here.
The key was exposed
Reset the stream key in Live Control Room, then replace the protected runtime value used by the container. Do not continue sending with a credential that may have been copied or logged.
