Send that scene to YouTube Live using the stream key for your event, then test the complete audio and video path before going live. YouTube receives a video stream with audio, so even an audio-led show needs a visual in the scene.
Choose the visual you actually need
| Visual approach | What viewers see | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Static cover art | A still image, such as episode artwork or a show logo. | The simplest option, with few moving parts. |
| Looped animation | A pre-rendered video that repeats while the podcast plays. | Adds motion, but does not necessarily respond to the audio. |
| Audio-reactive visualizer | Bars, a waveform, or another effect that changes with the sound. | Requires a source or tool that receives the intended audio signal. OBS’s official source documentation does not identify a built-in audio-reactive visualizer; verify any plugin or browser source against your OBS version, operating system, and audio routing before relying on it. |
OBS supports image and media sources, which are practical ways to add artwork or a loop to a scene. Its plugin compatibility can vary by platform, architecture, and OBS version. OBS Sources Guide · OBS Media Sources
Build the podcast scene in OBS
- Decide what audio OBS should receive. For a live show, use the microphone or mixer input; for a remote conversation, use the mixed program feed or the appropriate application audio; for a prerecorded episode, use a media source. OBS’s Audio Input/Output Capture source lets you select a device for a scene. On supported Windows versions, OBS also documents per-application audio capture. OBS Audio Sources
- Add the audio source. In the Sources dock, click + and choose the relevant audio input/output capture source, application capture where available, or Media Source for a prerecorded file. Select the intended device or application. Speak or play audio and confirm that the corresponding meter moves in the Audio Mixer.
- Avoid capturing the same device twice. If a scene-level source captures a device already captured globally, disable one of the duplicate captures. OBS warns that capturing the same audio device twice can cause echo. OBS Audio Sources
- Add the visual. In the Sources dock, click + and select Image for artwork or Media Source for a loop. Position and resize it in the preview, and check the source order so essential title text remains visible. OBS documents image, slideshow, and media sources, along with source ordering and positioning. OBS Sources Guide · OBS Media Sources
- For a live-reactive effect, verify the signal path before the show. Use a third-party plugin or browser-based source only after confirming that it supports your installed OBS version and operating system, receives the audio you intend to visualize, and runs without excessive system load. A rendered loop can add motion, but it is not an audio-reactive visualizer unless it actually responds to the live audio.
- Check the scene from a viewer’s perspective. Confirm that the image or animation is visible, the audio meter responds, and artwork or captions are not obscured. If the visualizer has separate audio routing, confirm it reacts to the same program audio that viewers will hear.
For prerecorded segments, OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Test file playback and routing in the scene rather than assuming a file is audible just because it loads. OBS Media Sources
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event in the Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream destination and stream key shown for that event into OBS’s stream settings. A stream key is a credential: do not show it in a screenshot, stream, or public tutorial.
- Use RTMPS if available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder ingestion. YouTube’s default encoder configuration detects settings automatically; its documentation says a custom key is needed to select resolution and frame rate manually. YouTube live encoder settings
- Start a test stream or recording before the public broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and verify the feed as a viewer would experience it.
Choose video and audio output settings
For a mostly static podcast visual, start with a conservative frame rate and resolution that your computer and upload connection can sustain. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than lower frame rates. YouTube’s recommendations below are for H.264 video; they are guidance, not universal minimum requirements or a promise of a particular viewer experience. | Output choice | YouTube’s H.264 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 10 Mbps |
For audio, YouTube lists 128 kbps as its recommended stereo bitrate and AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. The same guidance lists CBR, a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), and up to 60 fps. For stereo, YouTube lists a 44.1 kHz audio sample rate; its listed 48 kHz rate is for 5.1 audio, which a typical podcast does not need unless the production is specifically mixed for surround sound. These are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026. YouTube live encoder settings
Choose settings based on the upload connection and encoder headroom, not simply the largest available numbers. A static image or modest loop usually has less visual motion than a fast-moving scene, but the full stream still needs to remain stable. Test your chosen settings with the complete scene.

Test before the episode goes live
YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during the event. OBS also recommends testing before a first stream. YouTube live encoder settings · OBS Quick Start Guide
- Confirm the intended microphone, mixer, application, or prerecorded program is audible.
- Watch the OBS audio meter while someone speaks or playback runs.
- Listen for echo caused by duplicate device capture.
- Check that artwork, looped media, or the visualizer is visible and behaves as intended.
- Verify that the visual does not cover important show or episode text.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators before announcing the live show.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No sound reaches the stream | The wrong input or output device is selected, or the media source is not routed as expected. | Check the source’s selected device and the OBS mixer meter while speaking or playing audio. Test Media Source playback and routing. |
| Echo or doubled voice | The same device is captured both globally and in the scene. | Disable one of the duplicate captures and listen to another test before going live. |
| The visualizer does not move | The source may be a static image or ordinary loop, or it may not receive the program audio. | Confirm that the source is genuinely audio-reactive and that it receives the intended signal; verify platform and OBS-version compatibility. |
| Stream is unstable or stream health reports a problem | Output settings may exceed available upload or encoder capacity. | Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a sustainable combination and retest; monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| Artwork or title text is hidden | Source order, sizing, or positioning puts another source over the important content. | Adjust source order and placement in OBS’s preview, then check the YouTube preview. |
| OBS will not connect to the event | The destination or stream key may not match the event. | Copy the destination and key shown for the correct YouTube Live Control Room event, keeping the key private. |
