Keep that endpoint private: a practical option is AWS Systems Manager Session Manager port forwarding, which can provide access without opening inbound ports. Playwright MCP is not a security boundary, so do not expose an unauthenticated listener to untrusted clients.
What you are deploying
Playwright MCP is a Model Context Protocol server that lets a compatible client drive a browser, navigate to a page, and capture screenshots. The documented standalone HTTP endpoint uses the path /mcp on port 8931. For a client on the same machine, Playwright gives the endpoint form http://localhost:8931/mcp; for an EC2 host, the client needs a private route to the instance or a local port forward. See the Playwright MCP getting-started guide.
A Mumbai deployment places the instance in AWS region ap-south-1. Choosing that region alone does not guarantee a particular latency, data-residency outcome, or compliance result; those depend on the workload and its configuration. AWS documents Mumbai as ap-south-1 in its Systems Manager endpoints and quotas reference.
Launch and configure the EC2 server
- Choose the region. In the AWS console, select Asia Pacific (Mumbai),
ap-south-1, before creating the instance. - Launch a Linux EC2 instance. Select a currently supported Linux AMI appropriate for your environment. Size the instance for the browser workload you expect, then monitor CPU and memory under real use; browser demand varies with page weight, concurrency, and enabled capabilities. The available AWS setup tutorial uses an older Amazon Linux 2 example, so do not treat its AMI or
t2.microexample as a current universal recommendation. See AWS’s managed-instance setup guide. - Set up administration before installing the service. For Session Manager access, the instance must be managed by Systems Manager and have an appropriate IAM role. AWS specifies
AmazonSSMManagedInstanceCorewhen using an attached instance profile instead of default host management. Follow AWS’s Session Manager connection instructions and confirm the required network connectivity for your setup. - Keep inbound access narrow. If you will use Session Manager port forwarding, do not add a public inbound security-group rule for port
8931. If you choose SSH instead, restrict SSH ingress to an administrator-controlled source IP range rather than allowing access from everywhere. AWS describes security groups as instance-level firewalls in its security-group guide.
Install and start Playwright MCP
Run the Node.js server
The official getting-started guide requires Node.js 20 or newer. A documented headless launch command is:

npx @playwright/mcp@latest --headless --port 8931This uses a floating latest package tag for convenience. For repeatable production deployments, choose and pin a package version you have reviewed rather than relying indefinitely on the moving tag. Keep the process running with the host service manager or process supervisor you choose; the official setup examples do not prescribe a single production supervisor or availability target.

--headless --browser chromium --no-sandbox --port 8931The example starts the MCP CLI on port 8931 and binds within the container to 0.0.0.0. Its host port mapping does not make the service safe to expose publicly; use security-group and host-firewall controls to limit who can reach it. The repository says this Docker implementation currently supports headless Chromium only. It includes --no-sandbox; do not copy that switch without understanding and accepting the container-isolation assumptions for your deployment. See the official Playwright MCP repository.
Connect an MCP client privately
For a local service, configure the MCP client with http://localhost:8931/mcp, as shown in the Playwright getting-started documentation. For an EC2-hosted service, either use a private network address reachable from the client or forward the server port to the client machine and continue using the local endpoint.

Session Manager supports interactive shell access and port forwarding. Use AWS’s current CLI procedure for your platform; a local Session Manager plugin may be required. Consult the Session Manager documentation for setup and forwarding details. With forwarding configured, the client can connect through its local forwarded port without an inbound public rule for the MCP listener.
Once connected, ask the client to navigate to a test page and take a screenshot. Screenshot capture is a documented MCP interaction, but the exact output path depends on the server configuration and MCP client; verify where your chosen client writes artifacts rather than assuming a particular location.

Secure the browser and its clients
- Trust the client. The project states, “Playwright MCP is not a security boundary.” The getting-started guide warns that
browser_run_code_unsafe“runs arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is RCE-equivalent — only enable it for trusted MCP clients.” Do not enable that tool for clients you do not trust. See the security notes in the getting-started guide and the project repository. - Do not mistake configuration guardrails for isolation. Playwright describes secret redaction, origin lists, and file-access guardrails as convenience protections rather than security boundaries. They can help shape behavior but do not replace OS or container isolation, careful client authorization, and network restrictions. Review the configuration options.
- Protect browser state. Playwright MCP can retain browser state in its default profile mode. Cookies and authenticated sessions are sensitive; use a separate, access-controlled profile and storage approach when login state is needed, and do not share one browser context across untrusted clients.
- Do not assume the standalone endpoint authenticates clients. The documented HTTP example does not describe an authentication mechanism. Keep the listener reachable only through an access-controlled private route, such as Session Manager forwarding, unless you have separately designed and implemented an authenticated remote-access layer.
Keep the service reliable and diagnose failures
The official launch examples are configuration guidance, not a performance guarantee. Choose instance capacity by observing the CPU and memory demands of your pages and concurrency. For a persistent service, configure restart behavior and logs using your chosen host service manager or container runtime; the cited documentation does not establish a canonical supervisor, availability target, or screenshot-retention policy.
- The client cannot connect: confirm the MCP process is running on port
8931, the endpoint path is/mcp, and the client is using the correct private address or forwarded local port. For Session Manager, check that the instance is managed by Systems Manager, has the required IAM role, and can reach the required Systems Manager endpoints. - Port forwarding does not start: verify Session Manager prerequisites and install or update the local Session Manager plugin if required for your platform. Follow AWS’s current connection procedure.
- The listener is unreachable from outside: that is expected if you have not opened a public inbound rule. Use the configured private route or port forward; do not solve the problem by broadly exposing port
8931. - The browser fails to launch or runs out of resources: check the process or container logs, available memory and CPU, and whether the selected runtime and browser match your deployment. Reduce concurrent captures or increase instance capacity based on observation; no instance-size benchmark is established here.
- Docker behavior differs from a full browser installation: the documented image currently supports headless Chromium only. If you need another browser, check the current project documentation for supported deployment options.
- A screenshot is missing or saved somewhere unexpected: confirm the MCP client’s artifact settings and any mounted output directory. The exact output location is configuration-dependent.
