Yes, you can run an LLM privately on a normal personal computer. Install a local runtime such as Ollama or LM Studio, download model weights while you are online, and then generate responses on your own machine. For a strict privacy boundary, disconnect the computer or block the runtime’s network access after downloads and updates finish. Keep model files on storage you control, leave the local API bound to localhost, and do not enable cloud models.
What “local and private” actually means
A local LLM performs inference on your computer instead of sending each prompt to a hosted AI service. The model files, your prompt, the generated response, and any local document-retrieval work can remain on the PC. This removes the routine cloud-submission step, but it does not mean the application never communicates over the internet.
There are two separate questions:
- Where does inference happen? With a downloaded local model, the calculation occurs on your CPU, GPU, or both.
- When does the software use the network? Model searches, downloads, runtime downloads, update checks, optional cloud models, and any deliberately exposed API can still create network traffic.
LM Studio documentation says that chats with downloaded models and document RAG stay on the machine. Its privacy policy, effective March 28, 2025, separately describes update checks, model searches and downloads, email, and cloud requests; local chat content is excluded unless a cloud service is used. Ollama’s privacy policy, updated in March 2026, states that locally processed prompts, responses, and model interactions are not collected, stored, or transmitted by Ollama. Cloud-hosted models are a separate mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConsequently, “private” should mean local inference for the selected operation, with cloud features disabled and network access controlled. It is not a promise that an installed program will never check for updates.

Choose a runtime before downloading anything
The runtime loads model weights, prepares the context window, selects an available hardware backend, and exposes a chat interface or API. Choose based on how you want to work rather than on a universal speed claim; actual performance depends on the exact model, quantization, context length, and hardware.
| Runtime | Best fit | Interface and connectivity | Hardware and control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ollama | A simple local service, command line, and localhost API | Runs a background service and provides an API at http://localhost:11434. Models are downloaded from the command line or compatible tools. |
Ollama for Windows supports NVIDIA and AMD Radeon GPUs. Windows installation normally needs no administrator rights, and model storage can be moved with OLLAMA_MODELS. |
| LM Studio | People who want a graphical model browser, chat workspace, or local document chat | Available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. The Discover tab searches online catalogs and downloads files while connected. It can serve OpenAI-compatible endpoints locally or on a local network. | GUI controls make it easy to select a model and start a server; keep the bind address at localhost unless another trusted device needs access. |
| llama.cpp | Developers who need direct control over compilation, backends, and inference parameters | Lower-level tools and libraries rather than a single polished desktop workflow. | Supports backends including Metal, CUDA, Vulkan, SYCL, OpenVINO, and ROCm-related paths. Building or selecting the right backend requires more technical setup. |
You can use more than one runtime, but each may keep its own model directory and cache. Plan storage accordingly and avoid downloading duplicate quantizations without a reason.
Check the PC, operating system, and storage
Start with disk space, because storage is the first hard requirement. Ollama’s Windows documentation specifies at least 4 GB for the application itself. Downloaded models can consume tens to hundreds of gigabytes, depending on the number of models, parameter sizes, quantization formats, context-related files, logs, and updates. Reserve room for more than the first model so an update does not fill the drive unexpectedly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check free space on the drive that will hold the runtime and model files.
- Decide whether models belong on the internal drive or a portable external SSD. An SSD is preferable to a slow hard disk for loading large weights.
- Keep the model directory inside an account or volume protected by your operating system’s normal permissions.
- Note the operating system and graphics hardware. Ollama’s Windows GPU support includes NVIDIA and AMD Radeon; llama.cpp offers several accelerator backends, but the correct one depends on the platform and driver.
Do not choose a model solely by its advertised parameter count. File size, quantization, context length, and the runtime’s backend all change memory use. There is no single RAM, VRAM, or tokens-per-second number that applies to every model and PC. A smaller quantized model may fit comfortably where a larger or higher-precision file does not.

Install the runtime and obtain model weights
Ollama on Windows
- Download and run the Windows installer. Ollama’s installer is designed to run without administrator rights and places the application in the user’s account by default.
- If the default model location is unsuitable, create or edit the
OLLAMA_MODELSenvironment variable so model files go to a drive with enough capacity. Restart the Ollama service or sign out and back in after changing the variable so the new location is used. - Connect to the internet and pull a model that fits your disk and intended work. Treat the model’s license as a separate decision from its technical fit; read the license before using it commercially or redistributing outputs.
- Wait for the download to complete before disconnecting. A partially downloaded file is not a usable offline model.
The exact model name changes as catalogs evolve, so use the runtime’s current model listing rather than copying an old tutorial’s tag. Keep a note of the model name, quantization, and version you downloaded; that information is essential when reproducing a setup or diagnosing a memory problem.
LM Studio
- Install LM Studio for macOS, Windows, or Linux.
- Open the Discover tab while online. Search the catalog, inspect the file size and quantization, and download a model that matches your hardware and license requirements.
- Load the completed download in the chat workspace and send a short test prompt before going offline. This catches an incomplete download or an incompatible format while you still have connectivity.
- If you need an application integration, open the local server controls and start the OpenAI-like endpoint. Leave its bind address at localhost unless a specific trusted device must connect.
LM Studio’s document-chat and RAG features can use files on the machine with a downloaded model. Cloud model options are distinct; do not select them when your requirement is a local-only workflow.
llama.cpp
llama.cpp is the lower-level choice. Obtain a compatible model file, install or build the executable for the backend your machine supports, and select the appropriate accelerator options. Metal is used on supported Apple hardware; CUDA, Vulkan, SYCL, OpenVINO, and ROCm-related paths cover different processor and GPU combinations. Because build flags, drivers, and command-line options vary by release, record the exact binary and backend you use. This route offers the most control but gives you more setup and troubleshooting responsibility than a GUI or managed local service.
Run a local test and verify that it is not a cloud request
Test the smallest useful workflow before importing private documents or automating an application. The test should prove that the model loads, the runtime answers, and the endpoint is local.

Ollama API test in PowerShell
After Ollama is running and a model is available, send a request to its localhost API. Replace MODEL_NAME with the model tag you downloaded:
$body = '{"model":"MODEL_NAME","prompt":"Reply with the word local.","stream":false}'
Invoke-RestMethod -Uri 'http://localhost:11434/api/generate' -Method Post -ContentType 'application/json' -Body $body
A JSON response from the localhost service confirms that the request reached the local runtime. If the command cannot connect, first open the Ollama application or start its service, then verify that the model name exactly matches the installed tag.
LM Studio server test
In LM Studio, load the downloaded model, start the local server, and use its displayed endpoint and port from a client that supports OpenAI-style APIs. The server panel shows whether it is listening only on localhost or on a broader interface. A localhost address limits requests to that computer; a LAN address permits other devices to attempt connections.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Confirm the boundary
- Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet after downloads and updates, then repeat a short prompt. A functioning response while disconnected demonstrates that the selected model and runtime do not require a live cloud connection.
- Check that you did not select a cloud model, remote provider, or plug-in that sends documents elsewhere.
- Inspect the server’s bind address.
127.0.0.1orlocalhostis the narrow default;0.0.0.0or a LAN address exposes the service beyond the PC.
Set a deliberate privacy boundary
Use an offline period for sensitive work
For the strongest practical boundary, finish model and runtime downloads, install updates, close cloud features, and disconnect the PC before entering sensitive prompts. This is more decisive than assuming a privacy label covers every auxiliary feature.

Restrict network access when you must stay online
If the computer must remain connected for other work, use the operating system firewall to block outbound access for the runtime after maintenance. Apply the rule to the actual executable and revisit it only when you intentionally need a model download or update. A firewall rule does not protect against a separately installed plug-in or client, so review integrations individually.
Keep APIs private
Do not port-forward a local LLM server to the internet. Do not bind it to every network interface merely to make a phone or another PC connect. If deliberate LAN access is required, restrict the firewall to a trusted private network, use authentication where the runtime provides it, and shut the server down when finished. Anyone who can reach an unprotected local endpoint may be able to submit prompts, consume resources, or inspect responses.
Protect files and logs
Model directories, chat histories, imported documents, and runtime logs can reveal sensitive information even when inference is local. Use separate operating-system accounts where appropriate, enable full-disk encryption supplied by your platform, and apply normal file permissions. Backups and synchronization services are another possible disclosure path; exclude private chat and document directories from automatic cloud synchronization if your policy requires that data to stay local.
Understand hardware and performance without false promises
Whether you need a GPU depends on the model and the speed you consider acceptable. CPU-only inference can work for a small model or occasional prompts, while a GPU may reduce wait time for larger models. The deciding variables are:
Best Value
- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
- Model size: more parameters generally require more memory and take longer to load.
- Quantization: reduced-precision files use less memory, often with a quality trade-off.
- Context length: long conversations and large document retrieval increase memory use even when the model weights stay the same.
- Backend: Metal, CUDA, Vulkan, SYCL, OpenVINO, ROCm-related paths, and CPU execution have different driver and performance characteristics.
- Offloading: a runtime may split work between system RAM and VRAM, changing both capacity and speed.
Measure on the exact model and settings you intend to use. Record load time, response latency, context length, quantization, and whether the runtime reports GPU offload. A result from one model or one quantization cannot establish a universal tokens-per-second threshold for your PC.
Maintain the installation without breaking privacy
- Schedule a maintenance window in which the PC is online. Update the runtime, download new model versions, and remove files you no longer need.
- Read the release notes and confirm that a new model format or backend still works with your hardware.
- Run a local test while connected, then disconnect and repeat it. Keep the known-good model available until the replacement passes both tests.
- Review privacy settings after updates. Cloud assistants, remote model providers, telemetry, or new extensions may be optional but enabled through a later setup step.
- Back up only what your policy permits. Model files can be large; chat databases and imported documents may be more sensitive than the weights themselves.
LM Studio’s policy notes that update checks can include device and application information and an IP address, while model searches are anonymized. That metadata is different from the content of a local chat, but it is still network activity to account for.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The model will not download or load
- Check free disk space on the model volume, not just the system drive.
- Confirm that the download completed and that the file format is supported by the runtime version.
- Choose a smaller or more aggressively quantized model if memory allocation fails.
- If you changed
OLLAMA_MODELS, restart the service and verify that the new directory is writable.
The response is extremely slow
- Check whether the runtime is using the intended GPU backend and whether the graphics driver is current.
- Reduce context length and avoid loading several models simultaneously.
- Test a smaller quantized model. Do not infer that the PC is defective from one oversized model.
The API works on the PC but not from another device
- Confirm whether the server is bound only to localhost; that behavior is normally the safer default.
- If LAN access is intentional, bind to the private interface, create a narrowly scoped firewall rule, and check that the client and server are on the same trusted network.
- Never solve the problem by forwarding the port to the public internet.
The offline test fails
- Check whether the selected model is actually a cloud model or whether the client switched providers.
- Reconnect only long enough to finish a missing runtime or model download, then test again with networking disabled.
- Inspect extensions and document connectors for remote processing options.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Ollama when you want a straightforward local service, command line, and localhost API.
- Choose LM Studio when a GUI, cross-platform desktop workflow, model catalog, or local document chat matters most.
- Choose llama.cpp when backend selection, compilation, and inference control justify a more technical setup.
- Reserve substantially more than 4 GB if you plan to keep multiple models; that 4 GB figure applies to the Ollama Windows application, not to a complete model library.
- Download and test while online, then use a disconnected session or firewall rule for sensitive work.
- Keep the server on localhost unless you have a specific, controlled reason to share it on a trusted LAN.
The Bottom Line
A private local LLM setup is achievable: install Ollama, LM Studio, or llama.cpp; download a suitably sized model; verify a response through a localhost endpoint; and enforce privacy by disabling cloud features and controlling network access. The model, quantization, context length, backend, and storage you choose determine whether the experience is practical on your particular PC.
