You can loop a prepared Kannada devotional video or audio-and-image source into YouTube Live with FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi: prepare media you have rights to use, copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, configure FFmpeg for real-time playback and a suitable output profile, then test the stream before making it public. Whether a particular Pi can sustain your chosen encoding settings is something to measure on that board; the available evidence does not establish a capable model or guaranteed 24/7 performance.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming available and a stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio.
  • A Raspberry Pi and a locally accessible source file, or a prepared set of visual and audio inputs. The board is the host for this workflow, but no specific generation can be recommended as capable of a particular encode profile without testing.
  • FFmpeg installed with the required input, output, and encoder support. Builds and package versions differ; check the options available on your installation.
  • A stable internet connection with upload capacity above the combined outgoing audio and video bitrate, plus headroom.
  • Media that you are entitled to stream, including its music, performances, artwork, images, and video.

Can I livestream devotional songs I found online?

Not simply because they are devotional or publicly available. YouTube’s livestream terms require you to hold all necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers and other rights participants. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and confirm that your permission covers livestreaming and the relevant territories.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies such content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the content remains. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. Do not assume that a recording is safe to stream because it is a bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani, or other devotional work; check the rights to the specific recording and arrangement.

Choose how your media is arranged

Source you have FFmpeg setup What to check
One video file containing both picture and devotional audio Loop that file as an input. Confirm the file’s video and audio streams are the ones you intend to send.
A still image or visual plus one or more audio files Provide separate visual and audio inputs, then map the intended video and audio streams. Check that the image remains visible and that the selected audio plays as intended.
A playlist of files Prepare and verify the playlist or concatenated source before streaming. Do not assume that mixed formats or arbitrary files will loop seamlessly; test transitions and playback order.

These arrangements are not interchangeable: input mapping and supported codecs depend on the actual files and FFmpeg build. You can inspect available options with ffmpeg -h full.

How do I stream a video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg?

1. Create or schedule the YouTube stream

In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its Live Control Room. The encoder workflow uses the server URL and stream key shown there. YouTube’s encoder guide recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS; use the RTMPS endpoint when it is available. The normal URL may be shown by default, so use the lock control in Live Control Room to reveal the RTMPS URL. Copy the current URL and key rather than relying on an old saved endpoint. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder and its encoder settings guidance.

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, shared terminal history, screenshot, or public repository. Store it in a protected configuration or environment file where practical. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.

2. Pick an output profile your network and board can sustain

YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. For 720p at 30 fps, YouTube lists a video bitrate range of 2–6 Mbps. For 30 fps, a GOP of 60 frames corresponds to the recommended two-second interval. YouTube lists stereo AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Check its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before going live.

A lower-motion devotional visual may look acceptable at a lower bitrate than fast-moving footage, but that is not a guarantee of ingest acceptance or quality. Test the exact media and settings. Re-encoding to H.264 gives you control over an output profile but consumes CPU; stream-copying avoids video re-encoding but depends on the source streams and container being compatible with YouTube ingest. A Pi’s ability to re-encode a chosen profile is not established here, so measure its performance rather than assuming it.

3. Use a real-time loop command as a starting pattern

FFmpeg’s -stream_loop is an input option. In common builds, -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping; put it before the input it applies to. For file playback, -re reads at native rate so FFmpeg does not send the file as quickly as the machine can process it. Confirm option behavior on your installed build with ffmpeg -h full. FFmpeg documents these options in its command-line documentation.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i devotional.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST:443/APP/STREAM_KEY'

This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested Raspberry Pi command or a YouTube-certified profile. The 2.5 Mbps video setting is an example within YouTube’s stated 720p30 range, not a universal recommendation. Replace the endpoint with the exact RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, and adjust dimensions, frame rate, codecs, and bitrate to suit the source, installed encoders, network, and measured board load. The example assumes one file with both audio and video; separate inputs need appropriate mapping and may need different options.

How do I loop a video on YouTube Live?

Loop the input file with -stream_loop -1 before its -i option and use -re for real-time file playback, as in the example above. The loop happens in FFmpeg before the encoder sends the stream to YouTube. Verify the end-to-start transition with your own file: looping a file does not by itself remove silence, blank frames, or an audible seam. For a playlist, prepare and test the sequence rather than assuming a mixed-format playlist will loop cleanly.

Can I use a Raspberry Pi for a YouTube live stream?

A Pi is a plausible host for this kind of FFmpeg workflow, but the available Pi example is a community report from around 2022, not a current benchmark. It does not establish which present-day model can encode a given resolution, frame rate, or codec continuously. Before relying on the setup, test the exact workload on the actual board and installation.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

For a continuous run, treat power, storage, cooling, and network stability as operational concerns. The sources do not establish a universal Pi model, power supply, cooling arrangement, or uptime guarantee. During a representative-duration test, watch CPU load and temperature, FFmpeg errors or dropped frames, and remote playback. Decide how you will restart the process after a power loss or network interruption; a command that works once is not by itself a recovery plan.

Connect the encoder and test before going public

  1. Confirm the destination. Check the RTMPS host, path, and port against the current Live Control Room endpoint, and verify that the key belongs to the stream you created.
  2. Start FFmpeg privately. Run the command and wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room. If it does not appear, inspect FFmpeg’s error output and recheck the endpoint and key.
  3. Check both picture and sound. Confirm the intended visual, audio selection, loop transition, and stream-health status. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health.
  4. Check upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the total streaming bitrate. Include audio and overhead in the total; a download speed result is not upload capacity. For the illustrative 2.5 Mbps video plus audio and overhead, plan materially more than 2.5 Mbps of stable upload.
  5. Verify the viewer experience. Check the public or unlisted watch page and listen to playback before making the stream public or using the final go-live control.
  6. Plan archive duration. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For longer schedules, plan carefully and verify current platform behavior in YouTube’s encoder live-stream guide.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely check Next step
No preview appears in Live Control Room. Wrong or outdated server URL, protocol, port, path, key, or unsupported RTMPS setup in the FFmpeg build. Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room; check FFmpeg error output and confirm the installed build supports the required protocol.
Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong. The source may have separate streams, or FFmpeg may be selecting a different audio stream than intended. Inspect the input and explicitly map the intended audio and video streams for your source layout.
Playback stutters or stream health deteriorates. Upload capacity may be insufficient, or the board may not sustain the selected encode workload. Measure stable upload capacity, leave the recommended 20% headroom above total bitrate, and test a more conservative profile while observing board load.
Stream stops or shows a copyright placeholder. YouTube may have matched third-party content; a rights holder may also need to allowlist a licensed channel through Content ID. Review the content match and your rights, then contact the rights holder about allowlisting where appropriate. Do not restart with the same material unless you have resolved the rights issue.
The loop restarts but has a gap or abrupt transition. The file may contain silence, blank frames, or a cut at its beginning or end. Edit or replace the source and test the transition before using it in a public stream.
The stream does not resume after an outage. The FFmpeg process may have exited or the connection may not have recovered. Check the process and logs, restart as needed, and establish a process supervision and power/network recovery plan before depending on continuous operation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a Pi, computer, or home connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the content from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
