You can run a continuous YouTube stream from an old laptop with OBS, but only while the laptop stays powered, cool, connected and able to encode the video. For prerecorded, low-motion content, start with a simple scene and conservative settings, then test at the actual streaming location. If the laptop cannot stay on or the connection keeps failing, a cloud service built for prerecorded YouTube streams may be a better fit.
What “continuous” means on an old laptop
A laptop-based stream is not truly independent of the laptop: sleep, overheating, power loss, an ISP outage or encoder overload can interrupt it. YouTube’s published encoder settings are recommendations, not a guarantee that an older machine can encode reliably or that an Indian internet connection can sustain a particular bitrate. There is no single minimum laptop specification established for a 24/7 session; performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.
For a low-motion prerecorded video, a simple OBS scene is a sensible starting point. Confirm your machine’s ability to run the stream with a representative test before relying on it.
Prepare YouTube access and the stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction during the prior 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so activate it before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then retrieve its server URL and stream key for the encoder. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it could send a feed to your broadcast.
- Enter the stream details in OBS. Use YouTube as the service and enter the server URL and stream key supplied for that broadcast. Start the stream in OBS, then confirm that the Live Control Room receives the feed before sharing or starting the public broadcast.
Configure OBS for a low-end laptop
Keep the scene simple
Start with one static image or a simple video source and only the audio you need. Avoid adding unnecessary animated overlays, browser sources, filters or extra scenes while diagnosing performance. OBS notes that system requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; meeting compatibility requirements does not prove that a computer can stream adequately. Its system requirements page states that compatible hardware is not a guarantee of streaming or recording capability.

Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain
For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder guidance, checked in 2026, recommends 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. Its stated minimums are 3 Mbps at 720p30 and 0.4 Mbps at 480p30. These figures are not guarantees of stability. A lower resolution reduces network demand, but the laptop still has to encode the stream without overload.

These are YouTube’s published figures, not laptop performance targets. Choose a quality that is reliable on the connection at the stream location. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking stream health; its encoder guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Measure upload speed at the location
Measure sustained upload speed, not just download speed. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance uses 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate in that troubleshooting context; treat it as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee or an India-wide target. Leave room for other devices, network variation and overhead rather than setting OBS at the absolute measured maximum.
If Wi-Fi is unstable, OBS recommends a wired connection. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is an option only if the laptop and router have compatible ports. Ethernet cannot fix an ISP outage, inadequate upload capacity or a power failure. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

Test before relying on a long broadcast
- Use a private or unlisted test stream. Include the same kind of video motion and audio you expect in the real broadcast.
- Watch YouTube stream health. Check whether YouTube reports a healthy incoming feed in Live Control Room.
- Watch OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators. Rising dropped frames or a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- Test for long enough to expose problems. A brief successful start does not establish that the laptop, power and network can stay reliable for a long session. Observe temperatures and whether the machine throttles, sleeps or disconnects.
- Adjust one setting at a time. If the connection falters, reduce bitrate or resolution and retest. If OBS reports encoding overload, simplify the scene or reduce the output demands, then test again.
Plan for power, data use and archives
Keep the laptop available
Disable sleep for the planned streaming period, keep the laptop on reliable power and ensure ventilation is not blocked. These steps reduce avoidable interruptions but do not guarantee continuous operation. YouTube and OBS do not publish a specific laptop specification or an uninterrupted-session guarantee for this use case.
Estimate how much data the stream may transfer
At a constant video bitrate alone, 4 Mbps transfers about 43.2 decimal GB per day; 8 Mbps transfers about 86.4 decimal GB per day. These are arithmetic estimates (bitrate × time ÷ 8), before audio, protocol overhead, retransmissions and differences in billing units—not figures published by YouTube. Check your own broadband or mobile plan’s data policy; there is no single India-wide data cost to apply.

Do not assume a long stream will be archived
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer continuous broadcast, do not assume an archive will be available. If you need a recording, plan a separate recording method or shorter scheduled segments, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive. For local OBS, your laptop supplies the encoder compute and must remain powered and connected. You control the scene and settings directly, but you also have to monitor the machine, connection and broadcast. A cloud service for prerecorded streams moves the streaming workload to its service, while you still need to upload the source video and manage the YouTube broadcast. Availability, price and archive behavior depend on the particular service and its terms; verify them for your location. YouTube’s encoder page lists cloud services such as Gyre and Upstream, but that listing does not establish their price or availability in India.
