To run a podcast continuously on YouTube with FFmpeg, create a YouTube Live event, loop the podcast file with FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option, encode it with settings YouTube accepts, and send it to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL using your stream key. The loop repeats only while FFmpeg, the host computer, and the network remain available; it does not by itself provide automatic recovery or guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to live stream. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 and says channels must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility rules.
  • FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can stay on, with a stable internet connection and enough upload capacity for your chosen output.
  • A podcast audio file and an intentional visual for the live video, such as a still image. Confirm you have the rights to every episode, music bed, image, and other asset in the stream; YouTube requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
  • A stream event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, including its title, privacy, schedule, and other metadata.

YouTube’s encoder setup requires the encoder to connect using the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not put it in a public command, screenshot, repository, or log. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and stream settings guidance.

Prepare the YouTube Live event and ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then set its privacy and metadata.
  2. Choose the encoder option and copy the current stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Use the server format displayed there; do not assume an ingest URL from an old setup.
  3. Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before going live again.
  4. Leave the Live Control Room open for the preview and status checks you will use during testing.

Build the FFmpeg loop and send it to YouTube

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping of the following input. Put that option before the media input it applies to. The command below illustrates the structure for a podcast audio file and a still image; substitute the paths and the RTMPS destination shown in your Live Control Room. Because builds, media formats, and ingest URL formats vary, confirm the relevant options with the FFmpeg version installed on your host.

ffmpeg
  -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/podcast-audio.mp3"
  -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i "/path/to/podcast-cover.jpg"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR-INGEST-URL/YOUR-STREAM-KEY"

This example targets a 720p-class still-image stream at 30 fps only if the image and output sizing are configured accordingly; as written, FFmpeg will use the image’s dimensions unless you add a scale filter. For example, add -vf "scale=1280:720,format=yuv420p" as an output video filter when that output size is appropriate. Replace the destination with the exact RTMPS URL and key format YouTube gives you. Do not paste a real key into public documentation or shareable terminal history.

-re reads file input at its native rate and is useful when output packet timing needs to behave in real time. FFmpeg cautions in its documentation that it is not appropriate to blindly throttle true live capture or network sources. The still image’s -loop 1 keeps that input available while the audio loops; options apply to the next input or output, so ordering matters. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for the installed build’s exact option behavior.

Choose settings that match YouTube’s ingest guidance

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Its current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table when selecting the output.

Example H.264 output YouTube-recommended bitrate Practical note
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps A modest choice for a static podcast visual, if the output is actually set to 720p.
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps Use only if there is a reason to deliver the larger image and the connection sustains it.
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps Usually unnecessary for a still cover image; YouTube lists this recommendation for the specified format.

These figures are YouTube recommendations, not independent performance tests. YouTube’s table separately lists minimum bitrates and values for other codecs, so do not treat these selected H.264 figures as universal requirements. The command’s -g 60 at 30 fps makes a two-second GOP; if you change frame rate, recalculate the GOP to preserve the intended interval. Keep bitrate constant and choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain.

Test the stream before relying on it

  1. Start FFmpeg and wait for the encoder preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  2. Check that YouTube receives video and audio, that the image is correctly sized, and that playback is not silent, clipped, distorted, or out of sync.
  3. Open the public or unlisted watch page on another device, including a phone, to verify the viewer experience.
  4. Check a local recording if you are making one, and test how your chosen host and FFmpeg build behave when the network briefly disconnects.
  5. Before a long run, check the host’s process status, CPU or hardware-encoder load, disk space, and network path. These are operational checks, not guarantees of availability.

YouTube advises setting up an encoder well before an event, checking the preview, testing failover, confirming the stream is viewable, and continuously monitoring audio and video. Its network guidance recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and accounting for both primary and backup stream bitrates where applicable. A wired network connection is optional but can avoid some Wi-Fi variability; YouTube specifies no required cable type or speed. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and network guidance.

Keep FFmpeg running and plan for recovery

An infinite input loop means the file repeats while the FFmpeg process continues. It does not supervise the process, restart it after a crash, or ensure YouTube reconnects after every network interruption. If you need unattended operation, run FFmpeg under a service manager or process supervisor configured to restart on failure, add alerts for process exit and stream health, and test the recovery behavior before relying on it. The restart policy, monitoring, and reconnection behavior depend on your deployment and must be validated on that host.

A local FFmpeg process is the most direct setup, but the stream depends on that computer, its power, and its internet connection. A dedicated server or always-on host can separate streaming from your everyday computer, but adds hosting, monitoring, and restart configuration choices. No approach guarantees 24/7 service; compare options by recovery behavior, bandwidth stability, encoding workload, observability, cost, and control of the media and stream key.

Understand YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is not a promise that one event can run indefinitely or that a single 24/7 event will remain one archive. If you need recordings, plan scheduled segments or restarts and verify the current archive behavior in Studio. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube never shows an encoder preview Wrong ingest URL or stream key, event not ready, or outbound connection failure. Copy the current URL and key from the Live Control Room, confirm the event status, and check the FFmpeg output for connection errors. Keep the key private.
FFmpeg connects but YouTube reports unstable stream Insufficient or variable upload bandwidth, or bitrate settings beyond what the connection can sustain. Reduce output bitrate or resolution, check available upload capacity, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
Audio plays once and stops The loop option may be missing or placed after the audio input. Place -stream_loop -1 before the podcast input, then verify that the FFmpeg process remains active.
The still image disappears or output ends The image input is not looping or its options are applied to the wrong input. Check image input looping and option ordering for the installed FFmpeg build.
Audio/video quality or sync is wrong Unexpected source dimensions, unsupported output settings, or an overloaded encoder. Check the actual output resolution, codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, bitrate, and FFmpeg logs; compare settings with YouTube’s current encoder table.
Stream stops after an outage or process exit FFmpeg or the network did not recover, and no supervisor restarted the process. Check logs and host/network status, then configure and test a process supervisor and alerting for your deployment.
