To run a continuous live broadcast of prerecorded sermons, use an AWS Lightsail Linux instance to run an encoder that sends a prepared video or playlist to YouTube Live. YouTube then distributes the stream to viewers. If you only want visitors to replay sermons on your church website, embed a YouTube playlist instead; that does not require a VPS to stream.

Choose the kind of sermon loop you need

“Sermon loop” can mean either a continuous live stream assembled from prerecorded sermons or an embedded YouTube player that repeats a video or playlist. Choose based on how viewers should experience playback.

Need Use What viewers experience
A channel broadcast that appears live, with live notifications or chat An encoder running on Lightsail and sending video to YouTube Live Viewers join the same live event, rather than starting the sermon independently.
A page where each visitor can start or replay sermons An embedded YouTube playlist Playback starts for each visitor; there is no single synchronized live event.

The live-stream approach has more operational work: you maintain the VPS and encoder, monitor the YouTube event, and plan for interruptions. An embed is generally simpler when a live event, synchronized playback, and live chat are not requirements. The sources do not establish which choice suits every church audience.

Check channel eligibility and sermon rights

Before configuring Lightsail, verify that the church’s YouTube channel can go live. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of a planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Confirm that the church has permission to broadcast every sermon recording and any music, images, or other material included. The cited YouTube and AWS documentation does not determine the church’s rebroadcast rights; obtain permission where needed before streaming.

Set up a live sermon stream on Lightsail

In this design, Lightsail is cloud compute running the encoder; it is not a dedicated streaming appliance. The encoder reads prepared media and sends the output to YouTube Live. The steps below cover the architecture and YouTube handoff without prescribing an unverified encoder command or universal instance size.

  1. Prepare the media and playlist. Have the sermon files ready in the format your chosen encoder supports. Decide the order and what should happen when the end of the playlist is reached. Confirm the media is authorized for rebroadcast.
  2. Create a Linux/Unix Lightsail instance. Choose a bundle after estimating the encoder’s CPU and memory needs, media and log storage, and expected transfer. AWS lists vCPU, memory, storage, data allowance, and plan pricing by bundle in its Lightsail pricing and bundle information. Requirements depend on the media format, resolution, and encoder settings; test your actual workload instead of treating a particular bundle as a universal minimum.
  3. Decide whether to attach a static IP. If a domain name or other configuration needs a stable instance address, attach a static IPv4 address. Lightsail’s default public IPv4 changes when you stop and restart the instance; an attached static IP remains stable. See AWS Lightsail static IP documentation.
  4. Limit inbound firewall access. Allow SSH only as needed for administration. Add HTTP or HTTPS only if the instance also hosts the church website. Do not open an inbound streaming port just because the encoder sends video to YouTube: Lightsail allows outbound traffic, while its firewall rules control inbound connections. Configure IPv4 and IPv6 rules separately. See AWS Lightsail firewall documentation.
  5. Install and configure a suitable encoder. Choose an encoder that can read your prepared media and run on the selected Linux instance. Its ongoing maintenance, resource requirements, and restart behavior must be checked for that particular software and workload. Do not assume an example command for one encoder will fit another.
  6. Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or choose the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder configuration. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  7. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a secret: do not place it in a public script, screenshot, or source-control repository. Limit access to the VPS and to the configuration holding the key.
  8. Start the encoder and complete YouTube’s launch step. Start the encoder with the prepared media and verify that YouTube Live Control Room receives the signal. Complete the launch action there when YouTube indicates the stream is ready. Keep the Live Control Room available to monitor the event.
  9. Test interruption and restart behavior. Before relying on the stream, test what happens if the encoder process stops, the VPS restarts, or YouTube drops the connection. Confirm whether the chosen encoder resumes the media and reconnects as intended, and decide who will receive alerts.

Configure an embedded looping playlist instead

If the goal is replay on a church website rather than a live channel event, use YouTube’s share/embed workflow or player parameters. The player parameter loop enables looping for a playlist. To loop one video, the playlist parameter must also contain that video’s ID. Autoplay may be restricted by browser policies, so treat it as optional rather than guaranteed. Refer to YouTube player parameters.

A VPS is only relevant to this option if the church independently needs one to host its website; it is not needed to make YouTube repeat the embedded playlist.

Plan for recovery, archives, and maintenance

Use snapshots for machine recovery, not stream recovery

Enable automatic snapshots for a Linux/Unix Lightsail instance if point-in-time machine recovery is useful. AWS retains the seven most recent automatic snapshots. A snapshot preserves machine state; it does not demonstrate that an encoder will restart, reconnect to YouTube, or resume the live event. Test those behaviors separately. See AWS automatic snapshot documentation.

Monitor the process and arrange a fallback

Decide who checks the Live Control Room and responds to a stopped encoder, lost connection, or failed restart. Plan maintenance windows and an alternate playback option for viewers. The cited documentation does not establish an uptime guarantee for this particular VPS-and-encoder setup or promise an uninterrupted stream indefinitely.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is useful for replay, but it is not a promise that a longer event will be archived. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • YouTube will not let the channel start a live stream: Check verification and whether a live-stream restriction occurred in the preceding 90 days. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube receives no encoder signal: Check that the encoder has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, that the process is running, and that the VPS has outbound connectivity. Keep the key private while correcting configuration.
  • The stream stops after a process or instance interruption: Determine whether the encoder restarts and reconnects; do not infer that behavior from a successful snapshot. Test restart and reconnection independently and assign someone to monitor alerts.
  • The instance address changes after a stop/start: The default public IPv4 can change. Attach a static IP if a stable address is required for a domain or other configuration.
  • An embedded video does not autoplay or repeat: Browser autoplay policies can prevent autoplay. Check that looping is enabled and, for a single video, that the player’s playlist parameter contains the same video ID.
  • A live archive is missing for a long event: YouTube’s stated automatic archiving applies to streams under 12 hours; do not rely on that provision for a longer stream.
