Use the spare PC as the streaming and encoding computer: send it the source PC’s video and audio, add that feed in OBS, and send a 3840×2160, 60 fps stream to YouTube. A dual-PC setup can separate streaming work from gameplay, but it does not guarantee better quality. The spare PC, capture path, encoder, and upload connection must all handle the target.
Choose the right setup for your stream
YouTube does not require a second PC. A spare streaming PC is useful when you want to keep encoding and broadcast tasks off the gaming computer, but it adds a signal path to configure and troubleshoot.
| Setup | How it works | Best fit | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| One PC | The same computer runs the game or other source and OBS captures it directly. | A capable PC that can handle the source and encode 4K60 simultaneously. | The source workload and encoding workload share the same system. |
| Dual PC | The source PC sends its picture and audio to the spare PC; the spare PC runs OBS and encodes the stream. | A source computer whose performance you want to separate from streaming tasks. | The spare PC still needs a capable encoder, and the capture path must actually carry 4K60. |
For a typical dual-PC setup, the source PC’s HDMI output goes to a capture device connected to the streaming PC. OBS then uses that device as a video source. Some arrangements duplicate the source display so it feeds both a monitor and the capture device; follow the instructions for your GPU, display, and capture card rather than assuming every port or card behaves the same way. A capture card is one common approach, not a YouTube requirement.
Before buying or connecting hardware, verify the exact GPU or other encoder in the spare PC, the capture device’s supported capture mode, the host connection’s bandwidth, and your upload capacity. No universal CPU, GPU, or memory minimum can establish that an arbitrary older computer will sustain 4K60.

Verify that the capture path supports 4K60
Read the specifications for the exact capture-card model and distinguish capture from passthrough. A card may pass a 4K60 signal through to a display while capturing at a lower resolution or frame rate. Passthrough alone does not show what OBS can receive.
- Confirm the supported capture resolution and frame rate, not just the passthrough maximum.
- Check the required PCIe slot or USB connection and whether the streaming PC can provide the needed interface bandwidth.
- Check operating-system support, audio handling, and any HDR limits.
- Confirm the source GPU can output the intended resolution and refresh rate with the chosen monitor-and-capture arrangement.
- Make sure the spare PC’s encoder and OBS configuration can encode the resulting signal at 4K60.
Once connected, open OBS and verify that the capture source is actually delivering 3840×2160 at 60 fps. Do not infer the incoming mode from the source monitor’s settings alone. If the card, connection, or host cannot deliver it, choose a supported lower capture mode or revise the hardware path.

Configure OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Install and prepare OBS. Use the OBS official knowledge base to find its Quick Start, system requirements, and capture setup guidance. Select the encoder supported by the spare PC; OBS being installable does not mean the machine can encode 4K60.
- Add the incoming picture and audio. In the scene you plan to broadcast, add the capture device as a video source and select its audio path as appropriate for your card and routing. Check that game/source sound and microphone audio reach OBS as intended, and that they are synchronized.
- Set the video target. In OBS video settings, configure the output to 3840×2160 and 60 fps. Ensure the source, capture device, canvas, and output settings are consistent. If the encoder or connection cannot sustain this target, use a lower frame rate or resolution rather than forcing a failing configuration.
- Connect the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and use its stream key in OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. YouTube’s encoder setup page describes its encoder options.
- Choose the ingest protocol and encoder settings. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and the H.264, HEVC, and AV1 codecs. It recommends RTMPS. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Select a codec that the spare PC’s hardware and OBS encoder actually support.
- Set the 4K60 video bitrate for the chosen codec. Use the current YouTube live-ingest recommendations shown below. These are recommended ingest values, not evidence that your particular encoder or internet connection can sustain them.
- Start a test broadcast and inspect it. Check the picture, motion, audio routing and sync, and encoder performance before the real event. YouTube advises testing with audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast and monitoring stream health and messages while live.
Use YouTube’s 4K60 live-ingest settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, gives different bitrate recommendations by codec for 2160p60. Do not substitute recommendations for uploading prerecorded video; these figures are for live ingest.
| Codec at 4K/2160p, 60 fps | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | YouTube-listed minimum video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
The listed minimum is not a good target for an unstable connection: a stream that fluctuates or drops packets may still fail even if its nominal bitrate is at or above that number. Leave upload headroom beyond the video bitrate for audio and network variation, and check stability under the conditions in which you will actually stream. If your connection cannot reliably carry the selected setting, lower the stream target.

If 60 fps is not sustainable, 4K30 is a possible fallback, but it changes the requested target. YouTube’s same live-ingest table lists AV1 or HEVC at 30 Mbps recommended and 8 Mbps minimum for 4K30, and H.264 at 42 Mbps recommended and 11 Mbps minimum.
Useful advanced settings
YouTube’s advanced SDR guidance lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709, and 8-bit depth. Audio guidance for stereo is AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC, 48 kHz, and 384 kbps guidance. Encoder controls and labels vary, so apply the settings that are available for the encoder you selected rather than assuming every OBS encoder exposes an identical control panel. YouTube automatically transcodes live video into viewer formats, but that does not compensate for an unstable or incorrectly configured ingest stream.

Test stream health before relying on the setup
Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before an event. Include the same kind of movement and audio you expect to broadcast; a static desktop can conceal problems that appear during gameplay or other fast motion.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator and messages in Live Control Room while OBS is sending the stream.
- Check OBS for dropped frames and encoder lag. Network-related dropped frames point toward the connection; encoder lag suggests the spare PC cannot keep up with the selected workload.
- Listen for missing, duplicated, delayed, or out-of-sync audio, and verify which devices carry source audio and microphone audio.
- Confirm the capture feed remains at the intended resolution and frame rate rather than silently falling back.
- Test for long enough to expose fluctuations, not just a brief successful connection.
YouTube says 4K/2160 streams do not have the low-latency option and run at normal latency. If low-latency interaction is essential, 4K may not meet that requirement.

HDR is a separate, more demanding configuration
Do not assume a standard SDR setup becomes HDR just by enabling HDR on the source display. YouTube’s HDR live-streaming instructions state that HDR live streaming currently requires HEVC and describe additional OBS configuration. HDR depends on the source and capture path as well as the encoder profile, bit depth, color format, color space, and stream-key requirements. Check YouTube’s dedicated steps and the exact capture device’s HDR support before enabling it.
Troubleshoot common 4K60 failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS shows a lower resolution or frame rate than expected. | Capture mode, card capability, host bandwidth, or source output. | Check the capture device’s capture specification and selected mode, then verify the source output, connection, and OBS settings. Do not rely on passthrough specifications. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream buffers. | Upload stability or an ingest bitrate that the connection cannot sustain. | Check stream-health messages and network-related dropped frames. Test upload stability; use a lower bitrate or reduce resolution/frame rate if the connection cannot hold the target. Wired Ethernet may help in a relevant network setup, but YouTube does not require it. |
| Frames drop or OBS reports encoder lag. | Network congestion, encoder workload, or a configuration beyond the spare PC’s capability. | Use OBS and YouTube diagnostics to distinguish network drops from encoder lag. Reduce the workload or output target, or use an encoder the PC supports effectively. |
| Video works but sound is missing or delayed. | Capture-card audio selection, OBS source routing, or synchronization. | Check the capture device’s audio path and OBS mixer, then test source and microphone audio together and adjust routing or sync based on what the test reveals. |
| The display works at 4K60 but the stream does not. | Passthrough is being mistaken for 4K60 capture. | Confirm the card’s capture resolution and frame rate, host connection bandwidth, and OBS input mode separately from its passthrough capability. |
| HDR looks washed out or is not available. | Incomplete HDR support or mismatched color and encoder settings. | Verify the source, capture device, and encoder path, then follow YouTube’s HDR-specific instructions instead of treating SDR settings as interchangeable. |
Or let it run in the cloud
A spare PC and OBS are for sending a live source such as gameplay. If instead your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
