To run a study stream on YouTube from Ubuntu, use OBS Studio to send a simple, tested scene to a YouTube Live broadcast. Confirm your channel can go live, install OBS, connect it with the stream details in YouTube Studio, and test the actual scene before leaving it running. A 24/7 stream is an operating goal, not a guaranteed outcome: your computer, power, internet connection, OBS, and YouTube can all interrupt it.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel verified for live streaming and without a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service: Get started with live streaming.
  • An Ubuntu computer capable of running OBS and encoding your chosen video settings. OBS lists Linux requirements including an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X window system or Wayland, but meeting those requirements alone does not prove a computer can stream reliably. CPU and encoder load depend on resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity: OBS system requirements.
  • A stable internet connection with upload capacity for your chosen bitrate, plus access to YouTube Studio.
  • A study visual and any audio you plan to use, with permission to use that material.

Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu

OBS’s Linux installation instructions, dated August 26, 2021, give these PPA steps for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer. Check the official page for current package guidance before installing: OBS Linux Installation.

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Add the OBS Studio PPA:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
  3. Install OBS Studio:
    sudo apt install obs-studio
  4. Launch OBS Studio from your applications menu and complete its initial configuration. Choose settings you can sustain; do not assume every Ubuntu computer can encode continuously at high resolution.

Build a simple study scene

In OBS, create a scene for the content you intend to repeat. For a study stream, a restrained static visual can be easier to encode and monitor than a complicated layout. Add a clock or session indicator only if it serves viewers. Use only audio you have the rights to broadcast; a low-volume background track is still copyrighted material unless your license permits this use.

  1. In the Scenes panel, add a scene and give it a clear name.
  2. In Sources, add the visual source you intend to broadcast, such as an image or a prepared media source. Arrange and preview the scene.
  3. If you use audio, add the intended source and check its level in OBS’s audio mixer. Verify the audio is actually present in your test stream and does not clip or unexpectedly stop at a loop point.
  4. Preview every transition, media loop, and scene change that viewers may encounter. Avoid relying on a scene that has only been checked at its opening frame.

OBS labels and available sources can vary by version and installation. The essential check is that the preview shows the intended content and the mixer reflects any intended audio.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup guidance and confirm live access is enabled for your channel.
  2. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the broadcast and open its current stream configuration. Use the server URL and stream key shown there; do not reuse an old key without checking the current configuration.
  3. In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose the YouTube service if available, then enter the current stream details from Studio. If OBS presents a server field, use the ingest server and protocol YouTube specifies in the current broadcast configuration.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Never show it in a public screenshot, recording, or guide.
  5. Use RTMPS when supported by the current YouTube and OBS connection options. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP; Google’s protocol documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP over SSL and notes that the ingest connection needs valid protocol, server, path, and port details: YouTube encoder settings and Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Choose encoder settings your connection can sustain

YouTube’s recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are its recommended H.264 bitrates for the specified modes, not universal presets or guarantees. Check YouTube’s current table when configuring OBS: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Output mode YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate Practical consideration
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps Requires sustained upload capacity beyond the video bitrate to leave room for network variation and other traffic.
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps Higher frame rate increases encoding and bandwidth demands; use it only if it benefits the content and your system and connection can handle it.
  • Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends for live encoding.
  • Keyframes: set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Resolution and frame rate: choose a lower mode if the connection or computer struggles. A mostly static study visual may not benefit from a high frame rate.
  • Encoder: choose an available software or hardware encoder based on the computer’s resources, then test it with the actual scene. No single encoder choice is right for every Ubuntu machine.
  • Protocol: use RTMPS when available in the Studio configuration and supported by the encoder.

Run an upload-speed test and leave headroom rather than treating a speed-test result as guaranteed, continuous capacity. Competing uploads, Wi-Fi interference, or ISP variation can reduce usable bandwidth after the test.

Test before leaving the stream on

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event: encoder settings and testing guidance.

  1. Start a private or unlisted test broadcast, as appropriate for your channel and audience plans.
  2. Use the exact resolution, frame rate, bitrate, scene, audio, and loop behavior intended for the long-running stream.
  3. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages. Confirm that video and audio arrive, the scene remains stable, and there are no encoder overload or network warnings.
  4. Watch a full media loop or scene transition. Check that audio does not cut out, restart unexpectedly, or continue when you expect silence.
  5. Stop the test and correct any problems before starting the public broadcast.

Plan for interruptions instead of assuming 24/7 uptime

Neither the cited YouTube guidance nor the OBS documentation promises uninterrupted streaming from a particular Ubuntu setup or provides a complete official automatic-recovery recipe. A running OBS session can still be interrupted by a host freeze, power loss, network outage, software failure, or a YouTube-side problem. YouTube recommends watching stream health; that is monitoring, not a guarantee that a failed stream will restart by itself.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

For a long-running installation, practical safeguards can reduce some local risks, but they do not eliminate outages:

  • Prefer a stable wired connection where practical; it cannot prevent ISP or platform outages.
  • Provide suitable cooling and power for a computer under continuous encoding load. An optional UPS may help through some short local power interruptions, but it does not protect against internet or YouTube failures.
  • Decide how you will notice a stopped or unhealthy broadcast when away from the computer. Test your monitoring and recovery procedure rather than assuming it works.
  • Plan how OBS and the host will be restarted after a crash or reboot, and verify that the stream can be reconnected to the intended YouTube broadcast. Automatic restart behavior needs to be configured and tested for your own system; it is not a YouTube or OBS 24/7 guarantee.
  • Keep a person responsible for checking stream health and handling issues that an automatic restart cannot resolve.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not accept the broadcast Live access is not enabled, the stream key or server details are wrong, or the channel has a live restriction. Confirm channel eligibility in YouTube Studio and copy the current connection details again. Keep the key private.
Stream health reports network problems or viewers see buffering Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating for the selected bitrate. Run an upload test, reduce bitrate or output mode, stop competing uploads, and test again.
OBS reports encoding overload or the computer becomes unstable The chosen encoder settings or scene are too demanding for the machine. Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and test a suitable available encoder. OBS’s baseline Linux requirements are not a performance guarantee.
Video arrives but audio is missing or behaves unexpectedly The audio source, mixer level, or media loop behavior differs from what was expected. Check the source and mixer in OBS, then retest the actual audio and loop point in a YouTube test broadcast.
The stream stops after the computer, OBS, network, or platform fails The setup has no working recovery path for that particular failure. Use stream-health messages to identify the issue, restore the host or connection as needed, and reconnect using the current Studio details. Verify any restart or monitoring safeguards before relying on them.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want an Ubuntu computer and home connection to run continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded content from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
