You can run a prerecorded study-video stream on YouTube Live from a Linux VPS by looping a media file with FFmpeg and sending the feed to YouTube’s encoder endpoint. First confirm that your channel can live stream and that you have the rights to every part of the video and audio. Then configure FFmpeg to match the settings YouTube Studio provides, test the stream privately, and monitor the VPS: looping a file does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime.

Before you begin

Confirm that your channel can stream

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Age requirements also apply. Check YouTube’s current eligibility guidance before configuring the VPS: Get started with live streaming.

You can configure a stream manually in YouTube Studio and use its encoder settings. The YouTube Live Streaming API is an optional route for software that manages broadcasts; it is not required just to send an encoder feed. Keep your stream key private because someone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.

Clear the rights to the entire video

Use footage, images, animation, and music you created or are authorized to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if it detects a match. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: ask the rights owner whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube explains the process in Copyright issues with live streams.

A purchased track or a “royalty-free” label is not, by itself, proof that a track is cleared for this use or that Content ID will not flag it. Keep license records and resolve any allowlisting requirement before going live.

Choose a VPS that fits the stream

There is no universal VPS size for this job. The right plan depends on the configured bitrate, whether FFmpeg must transcode the media, storage requirements, and the provider’s current network and billing terms. Compare plans using these factors:

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)
  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
  • Outbound transfer: Check the sustained transfer allowance and any egress charges. A continuously running stream sends data for as long as it is live.
  • CPU: Transcoding requires more CPU than passing through compatible encoded streams. Test the chosen file and settings on the VPS before committing to a plan.
  • Network and location: Consider network quality and the server’s region relative to YouTube’s selected ingestion endpoint and your administration location.
  • Operations: Check storage for the media file, restart and monitoring controls, and support terms. A VPS can still become unavailable or lose its connection.
  • Total cost: Include the hosting charge and any transfer fees, using the provider’s current terms.

Estimate transfer from the actual configured bitrate and expected running time, allowing for audio and protocol overhead. Do not rely on a generic monthly data estimate: the result changes with bitrate and operating time.

Prepare the file and obtain YouTube’s stream settings

  1. Review the source media. Confirm that you have permission for every visual and audio element, and that the file plays correctly through its full duration.
  2. Create or configure the live stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the current ingestion URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Treat the key as a credential; do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, or repositories.
  3. Note the target settings. Choose the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the applicable bitrate and codec guidance.
  4. Check the VPS tools. Install FFmpeg using the VPS operating system’s supported method. Confirm the installed version and its local help or documentation, since FFmpeg documentation and options can change.

Loop the video with FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as an input option that loops an input indefinitely. Place it before the relevant input in the command line. This option repeats the media file; it does not, on its own, configure YouTube delivery, repair a failed connection, or guarantee continuous operation.

There is no single production-ready command that is safe to copy for every file and VPS. The correct stream mapping, choice between re-encoding and stream-copying, audio behavior at file boundaries, timestamp continuity, and reconnection behavior depend on the source, installed FFmpeg build, target settings, and deployment. Use FFmpeg’s documentation and documentation index to check the options available in your installed version.

  1. Validate the media and encoding. Check the file’s video and audio streams and make sure they are compatible with the output you intend to send. If they are not, determine the appropriate mapping or transcoding settings for that file and target.
  2. Build the command around the input. Associate -stream_loop -1 with the media input. Add the required stream mapping and output options for the settings YouTube Studio shows. Do not assume that copying a file’s encoded streams will work for every source.
  3. Use the Studio-provided destination and key. Supply the current ingestion endpoint and stream key without exposing the key in shared logs or public materials.
  4. Run a short test first. Use YouTube’s private or unlisted controls and confirm that the live preview receives data. Check the picture, audio, synchronization, and behavior at the loop boundary before a public launch.

Use RTMPS and match YouTube’s encoder guidance

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its RTMPS guide requires an RTMPS URL, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and application path, and port 443. Use the endpoint and stream key shown by YouTube Studio rather than guessing or reusing an old destination. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. Bitrate recommendations depend on resolution and frame rate, so use the current table for your chosen output instead of applying one bitrate to every stream. These are platform configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or source file will perform well.

Test, launch, and monitor the stream

  1. Check the preview. Confirm that YouTube Studio receives the feed and that the intended video and audio play correctly.
  2. Watch a loop boundary. Confirm that playback continues cleanly when the file repeats, without an audio gap, sync drift, or a frozen image.
  3. Review Studio alerts. Check for encoder warnings, policy notices, or copyright matches before making the broadcast public.
  4. Observe the VPS process and connection. A looped input will keep repeating only while the process, host, and outbound connection remain available. Decide how you will detect a stopped process or lost connection and test recovery on the selected host.

FFmpeg looping and YouTube ingestion documentation do not establish a universal VPS size, automatic recovery setup, or uptime guarantee. Host failures, network interruptions, software exits, and platform interruptions remain possible; monitor the deployment you actually use.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • You cannot start a live stream: Recheck channel verification, any live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and applicable age requirements in YouTube’s current eligibility guidance.
  • YouTube Studio receives no data: Verify the RTMPS URL, endpoint, application path, port 443, and stream key against the current Studio values. Check that the VPS can make an outbound connection.
  • The stream starts but shows encoder warnings: Compare the output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder table. Avoid applying a bitrate recommendation for a different resolution or frame rate.
  • The stream stops after a while: Infinite input looping does not restart a crashed process or restore a failed host or network connection. Inspect FFmpeg output and VPS monitoring, then test a recovery method appropriate to your deployment.
  • Playback stutters or the process struggles: Check whether FFmpeg is transcoding, the VPS CPU load, network stability, and available transfer. Reassess the plan against the actual source and output settings.
  • YouTube interrupts the broadcast for copyright: Review the detected content and rights documentation. For licensed third-party media, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; a license alone may not prevent automated interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not maintain a VPS and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo keeps a prerecorded YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
