To run a 24/7 YouTube stream with OBS, keep a computer encoding continuously, maintain a stable upload connection to YouTube, and keep the computer and network equipment powered. Start with a conservative bitrate that your connection can sustain, use Ethernet if possible, configure YouTube-compatible encoding, and test the setup during the hours it will run. No advertised broadband speed or single speed test guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
What a 24/7 OBS stream requires
OBS sends the video from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server. That means the computer must remain on and encoding, the internet connection must sustain outbound traffic, and the modem/router must stay powered. If power or internet fails, the stream may stop; a local setup cannot guarantee that it will stay live through those interruptions.
- A computer capable of encoding your chosen resolution and frame rate continuously.
- A stable upload connection to YouTube, with headroom above the selected video bitrate.
- A YouTube stream configured to accept the encoder’s output.
- Continuous power for the computer and network equipment.
Check Indian broadband upload speed and FUP
Compare plans using their stated typical upload speed, fair-use policy (FUP), post-FUP speed, and availability at your address—not just the headline download speed or the word “unlimited.” Test upload from the computer and connection you intend to use, ideally during the hours the stream will run and while normal household devices are online. TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum download or upload speed; providers must state typical speeds and FUP terms. It points subscribers to the TRAI MySpeed app or portal for speed checks (TRAI broadband FAQ).
After an unlimited-plan FUP allowance is exhausted, speed may be reduced; the provider must state the allowance and reduced speed. For example, Airtel’s terms describe a 3333 GB billing-cycle allowance followed by reduction to 1 Mbps, but that is an Airtel-specific example, not a standard for Indian broadband. The terms also say FUP may change and availability depends on network feasibility at the address. Check the current terms for the exact plan and location before relying on it (Airtel broadband terms).

Choose a YouTube bitrate your connection can sustain
Bitrate is the amount of video data sent each second. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these recommended H.264 video bitrates:

These are YouTube recommendations, not promises that a connection can carry the stream continuously. Choose a profile according to stable upload capacity and the visual detail you need. A 720p30 trial is a reasonable reliability-first choice when upload varies; 1080p30 requires more sustained upload but provides more detail. Leave headroom for fluctuations and other household traffic. OBS suggests starting at no more than 75% of total upload speed when troubleshooting; treat that as a rule of thumb, not an all-day reliability guarantee (OBS connection troubleshooting).

Connect OBS to YouTube and configure the encoder
- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it in a screen recording. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers live encoder setup and ingest settings (YouTube encoder settings).
- Enter the key in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key using the available option in your OBS version. Confirm the selected service and key before going live.
- Set the video profile. In Settings → Video, choose the output resolution and frame rate you intend to stream, such as 1280×720 at 30 fps or 1920×1080 at 30 fps. Make the output match the profile whose bitrate you chose; higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if the upload cannot sustain it.
- Set the stream bitrate and rate control. In Settings → Output, use the streaming encoder settings and choose CBR (constant bitrate). Set the video bitrate to the chosen YouTube recommendation, then adjust down if testing shows instability. Available encoder names and controls vary by OBS version and hardware.
- Set keyframes and protocol. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as supported protocols and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds in OBS if the encoder exposes the control.
- Check audio and start a test. Ensure the intended audio source is active and at a sensible level. Start an unlisted or otherwise suitable test before committing to a continuous broadcast.
YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 support. The bitrate recommendations in the table above are specifically the H.264 values; consult YouTube’s codec-specific table if you choose another codec rather than applying those figures indiscriminately.
Use Ethernet and test the stream under real conditions
Connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet where practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. Ethernet removes one source of variability, but it cannot fix an unstable ISP route or prevent an outage.

- Run an upload test from the streaming computer at the location where it will operate.
- Test during the hours the stream is meant to run, with ordinary household devices active.
- Start an OBS test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast; a static screen alone may not reflect the intended stream.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health notices and OBS for network-dropped-frame statistics.
- Keep the test long enough to expose fluctuations, then check again during the actual streaming hours.
A speed test is only a snapshot; it does not establish that the route from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server will remain stable. OBS attributes network-dropped frames to an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to sustain the selected bitrate, and notes that network problems are typically outside OBS itself (OBS connection troubleshooting).
Plan for power and internet interruptions
A UPS can provide short-duration power to connected equipment, but the runtime depends on the computer, modem/router, and battery. It cannot keep the stream online through an ISP outage, a local fiber fault, or a wider network interruption. Check the equipment load and desired runtime before choosing a UPS; there is no single capacity that fits every setup.

If you need a stream to recover after a disruption, understand that a UPS and OBS alone do not provide an internet backup path. A second connection may help only if it is available and configured to take over; do not assume that a power backup solves connectivity failures.

- OBS reports network-dropped frames or disconnects: Lower the bitrate and retest. Check whether another ingest server is available. Inspect the Ethernet cable, router/modem, network drivers, VPN or security software, and possible route congestion. OBS notes that congestion or ISP-side changes can contribute; contact the provider if local checks do not resolve the issue.
- The stream is on Wi-Fi and keeps stuttering: Test over Ethernet first. Wi-Fi may be unstable even when a nearby speed test looks adequate.
- YouTube says incoming video is insufficient: Check the stream-health message, bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval. YouTube’s API health reference includes high or low bitrate, unsupported codec, excessively long keyframe interval, and “video ingestion starved” among configuration or ingestion issues (YouTube Live health-status messages).
- A speed test looks fine but the stream still drops: Test at the intended time and inspect OBS and YouTube health messages. The route to YouTube can be unstable even when a speed test result appears adequate; gather timestamps and symptoms before deciding whether the issue is local or provider-side.
- Settings appear correct but interruptions continue: Check router/modem status and cabling, note when interruptions occur and the exact health messages, then contact your ISP with those details.
- The stream stops after a power cut: Restart the computer and network equipment, check that OBS is connected to the intended stream, and verify the stream key and YouTube Live Control Room state before restarting. A UPS can only help if it had enough runtime for the interruption.
