You can run a YouTube livestream from an old Windows laptop with OBS, but whether it stays reliable depends on the laptop’s encoder, the stream settings, cooling, power behavior, and internet connection. Set it up conservatively, test the exact content and audio under supervision, and plan for interruptions: the available guidance does not establish that any laptop or YouTube session will remain live indefinitely.
Before you start: confirm the channel and laptop can do the job
Check YouTube Live eligibility
Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old. If this is the channel’s first time streaming, enabling live access can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Check the laptop realistically
OBS supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 and lists a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic requirements. Meeting those requirements does not mean a specific laptop can sustain your intended stream: OBS says performance also depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. “Old” alone is not enough to predict performance; the laptop’s CPU and GPU, condition, drivers, content, and network all matter. Review OBS system requirements and OBS encoding-performance guidance.
For an older machine, reduce work before increasing it: use a simple scene, avoid unnecessary animated overlays and browser sources, and do not add extra cameras unless the stream needs them. Start at a lower resolution and frame rate if the laptop struggles. These are ways to reduce workload, not a guarantee that a particular computer will stay stable.

Choose settings the laptop and connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s settings as a starting point
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as encoder options. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate column for the codec you actually select. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations and minimums, not a measure of the laptop’s capacity or a guarantee that your internet connection has enough headroom.
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
There is an apparent inconsistency in YouTube’s listed H.264 values: its table gives 2 Mbps minimum and 3 Mbps recommended for 720p/30fps, while the 480p/30fps recommended value is 4 Mbps. Treat the table as published rather than assuming the numbers rise smoothly with resolution; check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table when configuring your stream.

Leave upload headroom
Your upload connection must carry the selected stream reliably, with room for normal variation and other network use. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Compare the result with your chosen encoder bitrate and leave margin rather than setting the stream to the full measured upload rate. A speed-test result is not proof of sustained stability, so test the stream itself at the intended time and location.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Enable live streaming ahead of time. Sign in to the verified channel, check its live-streaming eligibility, and enable access if needed. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and set up or select the event. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the stream workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. Use the values for the correct event and keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send video to your channel.
- Configure OBS conservatively. Choose an output resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate your laptop and connection can handle. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, following YouTube’s current codec-specific settings. Keep the scene simple; do not add sources that are not needed.
- Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the intended picture and sound arrive correctly before starting the public event. If the preview is missing or wrong, do not assume the stream is ready.
- Test representative content and motion. A still image or quiet segment will not reveal how the laptop handles a busy scene or louder audio. Run a supervised test using the real content and settings, and check stream health while it runs.
Stop Windows from sleeping during the stream
Being plugged in does not necessarily prevent sleep. Microsoft notes that many laptops sleep when their lid closes. Before leaving the stream unattended, check both the lid-close action and the plugged-in sleep timeout in Windows settings. On Windows 11, sleep timeouts are available under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep; review the plugged-in options and set an appropriate sleep behavior. Windows 10 labels and layout can differ. Microsoft’s power and sleep guidance covers the relevant controls. If you want to close the lid, verify that its plugged-in action will not suspend the laptop; do not assume.

Run a supervised preflight before leaving it live
Do not make the first long unattended run the first real test. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend checking the encoder before an event, previewing the stream, monitoring quality, and verifying access from channel or watch pages and a mobile device. For a solo creator, use those checks as a supervised preflight:
- Confirm YouTube’s preview shows the intended video and that audio is audible and correctly timed.
- Watch the stream-health indicators while representative content plays; reduce output demands if the encoder or connection cannot keep up.
- Open the public watch page and check it from another device or browser session.
- If recording locally, confirm the archive file is being written and continues to grow.
- If you have a failover plan, test it before relying on it.
- Check that the laptop remains awake while plugged in and with the lid in the position you intend to use.
Plan for interruptions, archives, and YouTube rules
A 24/7 title is not a guarantee of one uninterrupted session
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule does not establish a universal maximum duration for a live session, nor does it guarantee a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. The laptop may sleep, lose power, overheat, lose network access, or stop encoding; YouTube can also drop an incoming stream. Plan how you will notice a failure and restart the encoder or event, and check the current behavior shown in Live Control Room for your account. If uninterrupted availability matters, consider planned restarts or separate segments rather than assuming one session will run forever.

Use content you have the right to stream
A live loop is still a public YouTube broadcast. Make sure you have the rights to the video, music, images, and other material you stream, and check YouTube’s current policies and any restrictions shown for your channel. A stream key and successful preview do not grant permission to use third-party content. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance is a useful place to review operational recommendations; consult YouTube’s current policy pages for copyright and monetization questions specific to your content.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show the incoming stream | Live access, event selection, stream URL or key | Confirm live streaming is enabled, the correct event is selected, and OBS uses that event’s URL and private key. Check whether first-time activation is still pending. |
| Preview appears, but video stutters or encoder health degrades | Encoder workload or upload stability | Simplify the scene, lower resolution or frame rate, and check the bitrate against a fresh upload-speed test with margin. Retest the actual content. |
| Video arrives without expected sound | OBS audio sources or levels | Check that the intended audio source is selected and active in OBS, then listen to the YouTube preview before going live. |
| The stream stops when the lid closes or after a period of inactivity | Windows power behavior | Review the plugged-in sleep timeout and lid-close action. Verify the behavior with a supervised test before leaving the laptop. |
| The stream disappears unexpectedly | Power, network, encoder, or YouTube session | Check the laptop and network, then inspect Live Control Room and the public watch page. Restart the encoder or event as appropriate; do not assume reconnection happened automatically. |
| The stream is live but no archive appears | Stream duration or archive processing | YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Check the event in Studio and consult current account-specific behavior; do not infer a universal archive guarantee for longer sessions. |
What it costs to keep the laptop running
The do-it-yourself route avoids a cloud-streaming subscription, but it requires the laptop to remain powered, awake, connected, and able to encode continuously. Its practical costs depend on electricity, the machine’s condition, and the time you spend monitoring and recovering it; those costs cannot be estimated from the laptop’s age alone. A cloud service is an alternative when keeping a computer running at home is the problem.
