You can run FFmpeg on an OVHcloud VPS to send a playlist to YouTube Live, but keeping it online around the clock takes more than starting an encoder: you need compatible media, enough outbound bandwidth, a protected stream key, monitoring, and a plan for restarts. This guide shows how to prepare and test the workflow while distinguishing a continuous live stream from YouTube’s replay archive.
How the 24/7 setup works
The VPS is the always-on host for FFmpeg. Your media files must be available on that server, and FFmpeg sends the encoded output from the VPS to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Your home computer does not need to remain on once the process is running.
There is no single OVHcloud VPS plan established as suitable for every playlist. Before ordering, check the current plan’s CPU, memory, storage, outbound network capacity, region, and applicable contract against your media and encoding choices. OVHcloud says physical host resources are shared and that the customer is responsible for administering the VPS. Its contract also allows bandwidth to be restricted to 1 Mbps in cases of excessive use; that is a contractual caveat, not a statement of typical plan speed. Review the applicable OVHcloud terms.
Prepare an ordered, compatible playlist
Put the media on the VPS
Place the intended files in a directory FFmpeg can read, such as /srv/playlist/. Confirm that the files are complete and that the VPS has enough storage for them. The concat demuxer reads entries in sequence and adjusts timestamps, but it is not a general-purpose fix for arbitrary differences between files: the input streams should match, including codecs and time bases. Incorrect durations can produce timestamp artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Create the concat list
Make a text file whose first line is exactly ffconcat version 1.0, followed by one file entry per item in the desired order. For example:
ffconcat version 1.0

file '/srv/playlist/clip-02.mp4'Use valid paths. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters. This list describes the sequence; it does not by itself demonstrate a tested, endlessly repeating command for every FFmpeg build or mixed-media playlist. Test your actual files and transitions before relying on a long-running stream. If the assets differ, normalize them to compatible streams and verify the result.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. FFmpeg needs both to send the output to YouTube. YouTube Help says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, shell history, or exposed logs. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and stream settings guide explain the controls.
- Use the secure ingest URL when available. Select the RTMPS URL supplied by Live Control Room if your FFmpeg setup supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS and explains how to retrieve the secure URL in its RTMPS guide.
- Reset a compromised key. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. A process still using the old key may stop authenticating.
Choose output settings for the source and VPS
Use the current YouTube encoder settings table as the reference, and check it again before deployment because recommendations can change. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video codecs, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 10 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. This is guidance for that output format, not a guaranteed minimum for every source or a guarantee that your VPS can sustain it. Match resolution and frame rate to the source and choose a bitrate the VPS can deliver consistently. YouTube also recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Measure or confirm outbound capacity for the VPS itself; a speed test on your home connection does not establish the server’s capacity. YouTube’s bitrate guidance provides the current recommendations.

Test the stream before leaving it running
- Start with a short private or unlisted test. Use the intended playlist and output settings before scheduling a public, extended broadcast.
- Check Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview shows moving video and that audio is present where expected. Inspect stream health rather than assuming a running FFmpeg process means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Watch transitions. Check the change from one file to the next for gaps, freezes, timestamp jumps, or audio changes. Resolve incompatibilities before extending the test.
- Review the logs and restart plan. Decide how you will notice FFmpeg failures and restart the process after a process exit or host reboot. A service manager can restart a process, but it cannot fix every cause, such as a rejected key, a network restriction, host failure, or a YouTube-side problem.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Its guidance does not promise uninterrupted application-level operation for an encoder hosted on a VPS. Read YouTube’s live encoder guide before relying on the setup.
Keep the VPS secure and maintainable
- Apply operating-system security updates and limit remote administration to the access you need.
- Configure a local firewall. OVHcloud’s Edge Network Firewall documentation covers filtering at its network edge and advises configuring a local firewall as well.
- Keep the playlist and FFmpeg logs accessible to the administrator, but avoid logging the stream key in plain text.
- Check backup or snapshot options for the VPS product you order. Availability depends on the product; see OVHcloud’s VPS backup guidance.
Plan for YouTube’s replay archive separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee that one continuous 24-hour stream will be archived as a complete replay. Decide whether to schedule distinct sessions, accept that the full long stream may not become a replay, or make a separate recording if you have the rights and storage to do so. Check the current Studio behavior and controls for your channel before depending on an archive. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the under-12-hour archive behavior.

Troubleshooting common failures
