Yes. You can run a 24/7 YouTube Live stream from an Amazon EC2 Linux server by sending an encoder’s output to the stream URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. The server can keep a prerecorded loop or another server-side source running without a home computer, but the exact EC2 size and monthly cost depend on what you stream and whether the server must encode it. This guide covers the setup and its limits; it does not assume a tested FFmpeg command or guaranteed 24/7 uptime.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with access to live streaming and YouTube Live Control Room.
- An AWS account and an Amazon EC2 Linux instance. An EC2 instance is a virtual server; its type determines available compute, memory, network, and storage resources.
- An encoder such as FFmpeg, configured for your source and YouTube’s supported settings.
- A source: for example, a video file for a loop, a generated scene, or a live feed available to the server. These cases have different compute and storage needs. A prerecorded file loop is not the same workload as live capture or real-time transcoding.
- The rights to stream the material. Confirm those rights before broadcasting; the technical setup does not grant permission to rebroadcast music, video, or other content.
For a prerecorded loop, make sure the media is available to the instance and that the encoder can read it continuously. A stream sourced from a camera or other live feed needs that feed to reach the server; EC2 does not create a camera input by itself.
Choose an AWS region and instance carefully
Choose a region based on current EC2 availability, the route to YouTube ingest, reliability needs, and cost—not just geographic distance from India. AWS lists Asia Pacific (Mumbai) among the regions for its Live Streaming on AWS with S3 solution, but that does not establish availability of every EC2 type or service needed for a different design. Check current regional service and instance availability before launching.
There is no defensible universal minimum instance size for this job. An instance that only forwards or loops an already encoded source has different CPU needs from one that transcodes or generates video. Test the intended source, resolution, frame rate, and encoder on the instance type you plan to use, and observe CPU, memory, storage, and sustained network throughput.

AWS network capacity varies by instance type and network path. Some smaller instances can burst above a baseline only temporarily, so an “up to” network rate is not a guarantee of continuous throughput. Choose an instance that can sustain the stream rather than relying on a short burst.
Launch and secure the EC2 instance
- Select a Linux image and instance type. In the AWS EC2 console, launch an instance using a supported Linux image. Select a type appropriate to the actual encoding workload, then validate it with a sustained test.
- Choose storage. Provide enough persistent storage for the operating system, encoder, logs, and any media kept on the instance. If the source file is stored elsewhere, account for how it will be accessed and whether that adds services or network dependencies.
- Restrict access. Configure the instance’s security group, AWS’s network firewall control. Limit SSH access to a trusted source address where practical. A server sending an outbound stream ordinarily does not need an inbound RTMP port open.
- Connect through a controlled method. Keep credentials private and limit who can access the server. Avoid exposing management access to the entire internet when a narrower rule is practical.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream using the channel’s live-stream workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder configuration. Use the current values shown by YouTube rather than an old saved key or a URL copied from an unrelated setup.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not place it in a public repository, screenshot, article, or world-readable command history. Restrict access to configuration files that contain it.
- If you suspect the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. A key reset will interrupt any encoder still using the old key until it is updated.
Configure the encoder for YouTube
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, CBR (constant bitrate), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use settings that match the source and the sustained capacity of both the instance and its route to YouTube.

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not measurements of an EC2 instance’s performance. YouTube also advises leaving bandwidth headroom—20% is recommended—and testing the actual upload path. If CPU use or sustained throughput is unreliable at your target format, choose a lower supported resolution or frame rate rather than assuming that a momentary successful start proves the server can hold it.
This guide does not provide a copy-and-paste FFmpeg command: the correct input, looping behavior, codecs, and options depend on whether you are reading a file, capturing a live source, generating graphics, or transcoding a feed. Configure and validate the encoder for that exact source; do not use a command intended for a different input type.

Start with a test, then operate continuously
- Start the encoder and check that it connects to YouTube using the correct stream URL and key.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Verify that both audio and video are present and that stream health is acceptable.
- Use the control room’s go-live flow only after checking the preview. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- For 24/7 operation, run the encoder under a process supervisor configured to restart it after an exit, and retain logs that help identify encoder and connection errors. Monitor the process, instance status, and YouTube stream health.
- Test recovery deliberately and recheck after an instance reboot or stream-key rotation. A restart policy alone does not prove that the stream has recovered correctly.
These are operational recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular systemd unit, FFmpeg reconnect option, AWS instance, or network path will prevent interruption. EC2 and network connections can fail. A business-critical broadcast needs tested monitoring and redundancy beyond a single instance.
Plan for cost from India
A running On-Demand EC2 instance is billed for its running time, with a 60-second minimum. A 24/7 stream keeps the instance in a billable running state. The total also depends on the selected region and instance, storage, public IPv4 or other network charges where applicable, outbound data transfer, and any supporting services. AWS pricing varies by those choices, so there is no reliable single India-specific monthly total without stated architecture and usage assumptions.

Check current AWS EC2 pricing and use the AWS pricing calculator for the precise region, instance, storage, and traffic you expect. Estimate for continuous operation, not a short test session. Also consider whether a file loop needs enough local storage or whether retrieving media from another service introduces additional costs and failure points.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived as a single complete video. If an archive is important, verify YouTube’s current behavior and plan stream duration separately from encoder uptime. Segmenting broadcasts may be worth investigating, but the guidance here does not certify a specific segmentation workflow.
