You can run a 24/7 YouTube gaming stream by sending prerecorded gaming videos through an encoder, either on a computer you keep running or through a cloud service. For an unattended playlist, the cloud option avoids relying on a powered-on home computer. Before either approach, verify that your channel can livestream, protect its stream key, test the stream, and plan for network and playback failures.

How a 24/7 playlist stream works

An encoder converts video into a format YouTube can stream. The playlist’s video playback and encoding can run on your own computer or through a cloud service; YouTube documents both software encoders on computers and standalone hardware encoders. Its encoder guidance also lists cloud services for continuous streaming of prerecorded video, including Gyre. A listing is not an endorsement, and it does not establish a provider’s current prices, uptime, or terms. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the available workflow.

This guide is for playing existing gaming videos as a live broadcast. If you want to capture live gameplay from a console, that is a different setup: you need a way to get the console’s live video into the encoder. You do not need a particular gaming PC, graphics card, capture card, or playlist application just to stream prerecorded files; YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe those for this use.

Check channel eligibility and prepare the stream

  1. Confirm livestream access. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s live streaming tips before scheduling an unattended broadcast.
  2. Choose where the playlist will run. For a local setup, choose compatible encoder software or hardware and keep the machine running for the duration of the broadcast. For a cloud workflow, check the provider’s current features and terms, including how it handles playlists and interruptions.
  3. Create or select the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow the encoder’s setup instructions to provide the YouTube stream URL and stream key. In YouTube’s stream settings guidance, the key is treated as functioning like a password and address: keep it private, and do not share it or expose it in a public recording or screenshot.
  4. Test before going live. Prepare the encoder in advance, check the Live Control Room preview before starting, and monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast, as YouTube recommends in its live streaming tips. Confirm that the playlist advances and that the stream remains audible and visible.
  5. Check upload capacity for a local encoder. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate. The bitrate you need depends on what your encoder actually outputs; there is no one bitrate established for every gaming playlist. Connectivity disruptions can interrupt the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  6. Decide whether to enable auto-start and auto-stop. YouTube exposes these options in stream settings. Use them only if they fit your operating plan; they do not guarantee recovery from every encoder, network, or provider failure. Review the setting details.

Run the playlist locally

What the local method requires

Use a computer or standalone encoder capable of sending the playlist to YouTube. The device must stay powered, connected to the internet, and running the playback and encoder workflow for the stream to continue. YouTube does not specify a minimum computer for this use case, so check the encoder’s requirements and test your own files and network rather than assuming a particular PC will run nonstop reliably.

Local operating checklist

  • Queue the intended videos in the encoder or playback workflow and verify that the playlist can advance without manual input.
  • Enter the stream URL and key from the YouTube Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream configuration.
  • Start a test, confirm the preview and audio, then begin the broadcast.
  • Keep the computer and encoder running and monitor the stream. If either playback or encoding stops, the outgoing broadcast can be interrupted.
  • Check that your available upload bandwidth exceeds the stream’s total bitrate by YouTube’s recommended 20% margin.

Choose between a local encoder and a cloud service

The important difference is where continuous playback and encoding happen. YouTube documents both computer-based software and standalone hardware encoders, as well as cloud services for continuous prerecorded streaming. Its documentation does not compare providers’ prices, uptime, or recovery terms, so verify those details directly before relying on a service.

Consideration Local encoder Cloud service
Where playback and encoding run On your computer or standalone encoder In the provider’s cloud environment
Must your home machine stay on? Yes, if it is running the stream No local machine is needed to run the cloud stream
Monitoring Prepare the encoder, check preview, and monitor audio and video as YouTube recommends Check the provider’s monitoring and recovery options; terms vary

Troubleshoot common interruptions

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The stream will not start The channel may not meet livestream prerequisites, or the encoder may have incorrect stream details Check channel verification and restrictions from the prior 90 days; confirm that the stream URL and key match the selected YouTube stream.
The stream drops or becomes unstable Connectivity disruption or insufficient upload headroom For a local encoder, compare available upload capacity with the total stream bitrate and YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. Check the connection for interruptions.
The Live Control Room preview is blank or has no sound The encoder may not be sending the intended video or audio Check the encoder output and playlist playback, then verify the preview and audio before relying on the broadcast.
The playlist stops advancing The local playback or encoder workflow may require attention Test the entire playlist flow before going live and monitor it during the broadcast. For cloud services, check the provider’s playlist and recovery behavior.
An unattended stream fails to resume Auto-start and auto-stop settings do not guarantee recovery from all failures Review the settings and the encoder or provider’s recovery process; do not treat these YouTube options as a complete failover system.

Copyright and suitability of gaming videos

Before streaming, confirm that you have the rights needed for the game footage, music, and other material in every video. A successful encoder setup does not grant those rights or determine whether a channel’s content is eligible for monetization. YouTube’s cited setup and streaming guidance covers technical preparation, not the copyright status or monetization outcome of a particular playlist. Check the rights and applicable YouTube policies for your content before broadcasting.
