You can run a 24/7 rain ambience stream from a Raspberry Pi, but first choose what “stream” means: a self-hosted internet-radio audio feed or a live audio-and-video broadcast to YouTube. The radio route uses an audio generator such as Liquidsoap and a relay server such as Icecast; the YouTube route uses an encoder, YouTube’s stream URL and key, and its Live Control Room. A Pi can be the source for either design, but no particular setup is established as guaranteed to run continuously without interruption.

Choose the kind of stream you want

These two designs deliver rain ambience in different ways. Pick the one that matches where and how you want people to listen.

Decision Self-hosted audio radio YouTube Live
What listeners receive An audio feed at a server mount point, opened in a compatible player. A live audio-and-video broadcast hosted on YouTube.
Main components An audio generator/encoder such as Liquidsoap, an Icecast relay server, and a player. An encoder, YouTube’s ingestion URL and stream key, and Live Control Room.
Who delivers the stream Your relay server and network connection deliver audio to listeners. More listeners require more bandwidth. YouTube distributes the broadcast to viewers. Your upload connection must sustain the encoder’s output.
What you need to verify Audio source, server and mount point, firewall and listener access, and playback from another device. Stream key and endpoint, encoder settings, preview, and stream health.

Choose internet radio for an audio-only feed

With internet radio, Liquidsoap generates and encodes audio and sends it to Icecast, which relays it to connected listeners. The Pi can provide the audio source, but the relay’s network connection and capacity also matter; do not assume a particular listener limit without sizing and testing the actual server and connection.

Choose YouTube for a platform live broadcast

YouTube Live requires an encoder to send audio and video to YouTube using its server URL and stream key. This is not the same as publishing an audio-radio mount point. If you want a rain image or animation with the sound, create or select that visual in the encoder workflow as well.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi

Install an operating system and arrange remote access

  1. Choose a Raspberry Pi model that can run the software and encoding workload you plan to use. The available guidance does not establish one minimum model for every design.
  2. Use Raspberry Pi Imager to install Raspberry Pi OS Lite if you want a command-line-only, headless setup. Raspberry Pi recommends at least an 8 GB card for Raspberry Pi OS Lite.
  3. In Imager, configure network access and remote access, such as SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect, before first boot. Connect to the Pi remotely after it joins your network.

Match the supply to the exact board

Check the current official power guidance for your exact model and the peripherals you will attach. Raspberry Pi’s surfaced recommendations include 5 V at 5 A for Pi 5 and Pi 500 (with peripheral-current limits at 3 A), 5 V at 3 A for Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400, and 5 V at 2.5 A for older listed models including Pi 3 and Zero. The hardware documentation specifies 5.1 V for all models and notes that consumption varies with attached peripherals. Treat those figures as model-specific guidance to verify before buying a supply, not a promise that every setup has the same power needs.

Decide whether the Pi needs a physical audio output

If the Pi is only sending encoded audio over the network, a local speaker output may not be necessary. For monitoring or local playback, Raspberry Pi documentation lists HDMI and USB across models, Bluetooth where equipped, and a 3.5 mm jack on Pi 1 through Pi 4. The 3.5 mm output is line-level and may need amplification. A HAT or USB audio interface is optional; choose one only when the project needs a particular analog or digital output.

Build a self-hosted rain radio feed

The core arrangement is a rain-audio file or playlist feeding a generator/encoder, which sends audio to an Icecast server. Listeners connect to a mount point on that server using a compatible player. Liquidsoap’s documentation describes this relationship as: “Liquidsoap generates and encodes the stream, sends it to an Icecast server, and the Icecast server relays it to all its listeners.”

Plan the parts before installing software

  • Rain source: Choose an audio file or playlist that the generator can read, and keep the source available locally if you want playback to continue without relying on a remote file.
  • Generator and encoder: Configure Liquidsoap, or another suitable audio source/encoder, to supply the rain audio.
  • Relay server: Configure Icecast with a server address, credentials, and mount point. Keep passwords private; do not publish them in a guide, player link, or public configuration.
  • Network access: Ensure the server can receive the encoded source and that intended listeners can reach the mount point. Check firewall and network rules on the actual server and router.
  • Playback check: Open the mount point from a different device and confirm that audio plays. A successful local source or encoder start alone does not prove that listeners can reach the relay.

Package names, installation commands, and configuration syntax can vary by Raspberry Pi OS and software release. The Liquidsoap setup material available for this topic is development documentation marked 2.5.x; verify the syntax and package availability for the specific releases you choose rather than copying an unverified command sequence.

Account for listeners and bandwidth

In this design, the server sends a feed to each connected listener, so additional listeners consume additional bandwidth. The Pi may be a low-power audio source, but that does not remove the relay’s delivery requirements. Estimate demand for the actual audio bitrate and expected concurrent listeners, then test the real connection; no listener-capacity figure is established for this Pi workload.

Send a rain ambience broadcast to YouTube Live

For YouTube, the Pi must produce an audio-and-video stream through an encoder and send it to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint. YouTube’s setup guidance has you enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder, start sending the stream, and then use the Live Control Room controls. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the stream configuration because recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
  1. Set up the YouTube live broadcast. In YouTube’s live setup, obtain the server URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or include it in public instructions.
  2. Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s URL and the stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding.
  3. Choose settings your Pi and upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec; there is no single bitrate that applies to every stream. For a mostly static rain visual, a needlessly high resolution or frame rate adds work without being necessary to convey the scene. This is a practical recommendation, not a benchmark of a particular Pi model.
  4. Test representative content. Send the actual rain audio and visual at the intended settings. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and video and running a speed test to check the upload connection.
  5. Start sending and check the preview. Confirm that the encoder is sending to YouTube, then use the Live Control Room controls to review the preview and start the broadcast as appropriate.
  6. Monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the event. A successful start does not establish that the connection or encoder will remain healthy indefinitely.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that a 24/7 broadcast will produce one unbroken archive, so do not rely on it as a guarantee of a complete recording.

  • Keep YouTube stream keys and Icecast credentials private, and confirm that the audio and any visuals are authorized for the way you plan to use them.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next check
The encoder runs, but a radio player cannot connect. Icecast address, mount point, listener reachability, or firewall/network rules. Confirm the exact mount point and server configuration, then test from a separate device and network path.
The source sends audio, but listeners hear silence or the wrong content. Rain file or playlist selection, generator configuration, or audio routing. Verify the selected source and listen to the feed from another device; check the generator’s status and configuration.
YouTube does not receive the broadcast. Server URL, stream key, encoder connection, or network access. Recheck the URL and key in the encoder without exposing the key, then review YouTube’s Live Control Room messages.
The YouTube preview is unstable or stream health reports an issue. Upload capacity or encoder settings that the connection cannot sustain. Run a speed test, reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate, and test again with representative content using YouTube’s current recommendations.
The stream stops after a restart or network drop. Service restart behavior, source availability, or network recovery. Test reboot and network-loss recovery deliberately; configure restart behavior and confirm the source is available after recovery.
The Pi behaves inconsistently under load. Power supply, attached peripherals, temperature, or storage. Verify the model-specific supply guidance and inspect power, temperature, and storage during a representative run.
