You can run a continuous Pomodoro study stream by looping recorded sessions in OBS and sending the encoder feed to YouTube Live. Create a Media Source for one video or a VLC Video source for a playlist, add your YouTube stream URL and key, then test the loop, audio, and stream health before leaving it on. This DIY setup depends on your computer, power, and internet staying available; if you want the stream to run without a home computer, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative described below.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to livestream. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must have had no livestreaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. If livestreaming is new to the channel, enable it ahead of time; activation may not be immediate. YouTube’s getting-started instructions.
- A computer running OBS Studio, your recorded Pomodoro sessions, and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings.
- Permission to livestream and archive every element in the recordings, including music, artwork, ambient sound, and any clips or overlays. A video being available online does not by itself grant rebroadcast rights.
You do not need a camera for this recorded-video workflow. The encoder sends the prerecorded footage as a live feed.
Prepare your Pomodoro recordings and playlist
Choose whether the stream should repeat one session or rotate through several. A single recording gives viewers a consistent cycle. A playlist offers variety; decide whether its order should stay fixed or be shuffled. Include any breaks, countdowns, or clock graphics in the recordings or sources you intend to play, and check that transitions do not produce unexpected silence or black frames.
Before building the scene, play each file locally and confirm its picture, sound, duration, and synchronization. OBS supports common video and audio formats, but playback can depend on the file’s codecs, so test the actual recordings you plan to use. OBS documents its media sources at OBS Media Sources.

Set up the YouTube livestream in OBS
- Create the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter the Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, then set its title, description, visibility, and other details. YouTube’s workflow is documented in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the connection details: In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate custom server option, and enter the details. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Add the recording: In OBS, select a scene, choose Sources > + > Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop. For multiple videos, add a VLC Video source and build a playlist. Check its Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist controls to match the order you want.
- Set output and video: In OBS, open Settings > Output and choose the streaming encoder settings, then open Settings > Video to select the canvas and output resolution and frame rate. Use the same frame rate as your content where practical; avoid upscaling a small recording just to choose a larger stream resolution.
- Start and verify: Click Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room, check stream health, and use the appropriate go-live action for a scheduled stream. Confirm the stream is visible on its watch page before relying on it.
Choose bitrate, keyframes, and latency
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, checked in 2026, varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following figures apply specifically to 30 fps streams; they are recommendations, not guarantees of quality or stability on a particular computer or connection. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
| Resolution and frame rate | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS to encrypt the feed. Check that your selected OBS encoder and YouTube ingest settings agree; codec options depend on the encoder available on your system.

Leave upload headroom rather than matching the stream bitrate to your connection’s best-case speed. YouTube recommends 20% spare upload capacity. If using primary and backup streams, account for both bitrates. Its streaming tips warn that a connectivity disruption can break the stream; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
For a prerecorded study room, ordinary latency is usually a sensible starting point unless real-time chat interaction is central to the format. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture and display; lower latency can increase buffering. See Manage live stream settings.

Test the loop and monitor stream health
Run a test before announcing an all-day stream. Make the test resemble the real broadcast: include moving footage and audio, rather than checking only a static screen. Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, and check the video and audio on the watch page.
- Let the recording reach its end and confirm it returns to the beginning without stopping the encoder.
- For a playlist, check the transition between files and verify that loop and shuffle behave as intended.
- Listen for silence, clipping, unexpected desktop audio, or audio drifting out of sync.
- Check the stream at the selected resolution and frame rate, and make sure the upload connection remains comfortably above the total stream bitrate.
- If you rely on a backup encoder, test its failover rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
A local OBS stream relies on the computer and encoder process staying on, as well as power and internet access. Monitoring and a restart plan help you respond if the stream stops. A UPS can help cover some power interruptions to the computer, but it is not an internet backup or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

Understand 24-hour archives and viewer rewind
Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will become one complete replay. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; they do not promise a complete archive for an unbroken 24/7 stream. If complete replays matter, test a workflow that ends and restarts the broadcast in shorter segments and confirm the resulting archives.
Viewers may be able to pause or rewind using DVR, but YouTube says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. That means a viewer joining late may not be able to rewind to the start of the broadcast. Check YouTube’s live stream DVR guidance and set expectations in the stream description.

Keep the stream within YouTube’s content rules
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies material that remains in the broadcast, it may replace, interrupt, or terminate the stream. This applies to recorded sessions too, including background music and other material captured in the recording. If you have a license, check whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel through Content ID; a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
- Use footage, audio, and graphics you created or have explicit rights to livestream and archive.
- Check that permission covers continuous rebroadcast, not just a one-time upload or personal use.
- Keep documentation of licenses and permissions, and confirm any Content ID allowlisting requirements before going live.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | The stream URL or key is incorrect, the encoder is not started, or the channel is not ready to livestream. | Recheck the URL and key in OBS, confirm streaming is enabled for the channel, and look for an incoming preview in Live Control Room. |
| The stream buffers or health warnings appear | Available upload capacity is insufficient or unstable for the bitrate. | Check actual upload performance, reduce output bitrate or resolution, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. |
| The video stops at the end of a session | The Media Source loop option is off, or the playlist is not configured to loop. | Enable Loop for the Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video, then test through a complete file transition. |
| The stream is interrupted after copyrighted material appears | YouTube’s live scanning detected third-party material, or the channel was not allowlisted where required. | Remove or replace the material, verify streaming and archive rights, and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. |
| The broadcast ends and the full replay is missing | A single continuous stream exceeded the duration for which YouTube describes automatic archiving. | For future broadcasts, test shorter segmented streams and verify that each segment archives as intended. |
