FFmpeg can loop a media file and send it to YouTube Live, but a working command is only one part of a dependable 24/7 stream. You also need a live-eligible channel, rights to the recording and any accompanying visuals, a tested encoder profile, enough upload bandwidth, and a plan to detect and recover from failures. This guide walks through those steps, including a sample RTMPS command and the limits of what it guarantees.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • FFmpeg installed on a computer that can stay on and connected for as long as you want to run the DIY stream.
  • A media file with the music and, for a conventional video stream, a compatible visual track. You can use a static image or a simple visual loop if that suits the program.
  • Permission to use the specific recording, composition or arrangement, and visual material in a livestream and its possible archive.
  • Reliable outbound internet capacity for the chosen video and audio bitrates, with additional headroom.

FFmpeg can publish real-time media to an RTMP server, and YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Neither FFmpeg nor a single command supplies monitoring, a failover plan, or a guarantee that a connection will recover by itself.

Check music rights before you schedule the stream

A raga, traditional composition, or other old repertoire may have a different rights status from a particular modern performance of it. A recording can be protected even when the underlying composition is traditional; arrangements, accompanying material, and visuals can have their own rights as well. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the actual content you plan to broadcast and, if relevant, archive.

YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions put the responsibility on the provider to have necessary rights, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content. A match can prompt a warning, replace the live image with a placeholder, interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. YouTube says a stream can still be interrupted even when you have a licence unless the rightsholder has added your channel to the Content ID allowlist. Archived streams may receive Content ID claims after the live broadcast ends. Ask the relevant rightsholder about allowlisting before you go live; do not assume that a licence automatically prevents an automated interruption.

Enable live streaming and create a YouTube stream

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Review the current YouTube live-streaming requirements if the feature is unavailable or your channel’s status is unclear.
  2. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, open Create and choose Go live to reach Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the options presented for your channel.
  3. Choose encoder streaming. Select the encoder workflow and copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values from Live Control Room rather than an example server address.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public scripts, repositories, screen shares, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the FFmpeg output configuration.
  5. Use RTMPS if available. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data between the encoder and YouTube’s servers. Copy the protocol and ingest URL that YouTube provides for your stream.

The YouTube Help article on stream settings explains the encoder workflow and key handling. Interface wording and available controls can change, so follow the labels currently shown in your Studio account.

Choose resolution, bitrate, and audio settings

Use the settings guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually select; a bitrate recommendation is not a universal preset. For an audio-led program with a static image or restrained visual loop, a modest supported video profile may be sufficient. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS.

Example H.264 profile YouTube-listed minimum video bitrate YouTube-listed recommended video bitrate
480p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are values in YouTube’s encoder guidance, not a claim that every music stream needs the highest listed rate. For stereo audio, YouTube’s guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for your chosen profile before relying on these values.

Before launching a long broadcast, test the intended media and settings in Live Control Room. Confirm the preview appears, listen for silence, clipping, distortion, or unwanted gaps, and check stream health. A static image does not remove the need to validate the complete output.

Loop a media file with FFmpeg

For a local file that already contains both video and audio, this command illustrates a real-time loop sent to an RTMPS ingest URL:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "music-and-visual.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY"
  1. Replace music-and-visual.mp4 with the path to your tested local file.
  2. Replace the quoted output value with the exact RTMPS ingest address and stream key from Live Control Room. Do not publish the key or reuse a sample host value.
  3. Match the output dimensions and bitrate to the profile you selected in YouTube’s current guidance and to your tested upload capacity. The example’s 30 fps, 60-frame GOP, and 2500 kbps video rate are illustrative settings, not a universal YouTube preset.
  4. Run the command in a test session and inspect Live Control Room’s preview and health indicators before treating it as production-ready.

The command assumes an FFmpeg build that includes the named encoder and accepts these options for the input format. FFmpeg builds and source formats differ, so check the options supported by your installed build if an option or encoder is rejected.

If your source is audio-only

The sample command expects a video stream as well as audio. An audio file alone does not provide the visual output that command expects. Add a compatible image or video source using a method verified with your installed FFmpeg build, then test the entire output in Live Control Room before scheduling a continuous broadcast. The exact source/filter construction depends on your input and build, so do not assume an untested command will work for every audio format.

If you want a playlist rather than one repeating file

A file loop repeats the source; it does not create a gapless or musically seamless transition. Listen to the loop boundary for silence, an abrupt cut, clipped notes, or an unintended return to the opening. For multiple recordings, prepare the intended order and explicitly test how your chosen playlist method handles transitions, end-of-file behavior, and a missing or unreadable file.

Keep the stream operating continuously

Leave bandwidth headroom

YouTube recommends upload capacity above the total stream bitrate, with roughly 20% reserved as headroom. Measure outbound capacity rather than relying on download speed. If you use more than one output, account for their combined bitrate. A wired connection may be an option when suitable for your setup, but it does not guarantee reliability.

Monitor FFmpeg and YouTube

For a DIY 24/7 stream, arrange a way to notice when FFmpeg exits, stops making progress, or begins reporting errors, and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators as well. Test the actual restart procedure and the time it takes to regain a live signal. A command running in a terminal is not a recovery plan if the computer reboots, the process exits, or the network fails.

FFmpeg documents reconnect controls such as reconnect_at_eof for certain HTTP inputs. Those HTTP input options are not a general guarantee that a failed RTMP/RTMPS publishing session will reconnect. Test disconnect and restart behavior with your exact FFmpeg build, operating environment, and YouTube configuration.

Plan archive handling

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 session will be archived indefinitely or specify a best procedure for a continuous station. If you need archives, verify current Studio behavior and test a controlled session-rotation plan and any local recording process before launch.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Possible cause What to check or do
Live Control Room does not show the incoming stream Incorrect or stale ingest URL/key, wrong output protocol, or channel not yet able to livestream Recheck the current stream’s URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the output uses the provided RTMPS address, and review channel eligibility.
YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity for the selected bitrate Measure outbound bandwidth, leave the recommended headroom, and retest at a supported profile with a lower bitrate if necessary.
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or option The installed build or input format does not support a named encoder or option Check the installed build’s available encoders and option documentation, then adapt and test the command rather than assuming every build is identical.
Stream starts but has no audio, distorted audio, or gaps Wrong input mapping or audio format, clipping in the source, or an audible gap at the loop boundary Play the source locally, verify the complete output in a test stream, and inspect audio levels and the end-to-start transition.
Broadcast is interrupted after a copyright warning A live Content ID match or rights/allowlist issue Do not simply restart unchanged. Confirm rights for the recording and other material, contact the rightsholder about Content ID allowlisting, and resolve the match before resuming.
Stream stops after a computer, process, or network interruption FFmpeg exited or lost its publishing connection; HTTP input reconnect settings do not guarantee output recovery Check process output and logs, restore the source and network, then use the restart procedure you tested. Confirm the new signal appears in Live Control Room.
Expected archive is missing or incomplete The session exceeded the stated under-12-hour automatic-archive guidance or archive behavior differed from the tested plan Check current Studio status and use a tested shorter-session rotation or local recording plan if an archive is essential.
