You can loop a local fireplace video with FFmpeg and publish it to a live-streaming platform’s RTMP ingest endpoint, then use systemd to restart FFmpeg if it exits. That keeps the process running, but it does not prove viewers can see a healthy stream: check both the Ubuntu service logs and the platform’s incoming-stream preview or public player.

How the setup works

The pipeline has four parts: a fireplace video and audio file you have the right to broadcast, FFmpeg to loop and encode it, the destination platform’s current ingest URL and stream key, and a service manager to restart FFmpeg after a failure. FFmpeg supports input looping and RTMP publishing with FLV output; the destination determines which codecs, bitrates, frame rates, and other settings it accepts. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg command-line documentation.

This guide describes the software pipeline rather than a guaranteed YouTube preset. Confirm the current requirements and ingest details in the platform’s own live-stream controls before starting. The available sources do not establish current YouTube bitrate, codec, frame-size, keyframe, or continuous-broadcast requirements, so do not treat sample values or an old endpoint format as authoritative.

Prepare Ubuntu and your media

Check FFmpeg and available encoders

Install FFmpeg using the Ubuntu package or another deliberate installation method, then inspect the build on the actual server before choosing codecs. Package contents vary, so an encoder available on one Ubuntu host may not be available on another.

  1. Check the installed version with ffmpeg -version.

  2. Review available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders, and confirm that the video and audio encoders you intend to use are present.

  3. Keep the full command-line options in line with the installed FFmpeg build and the destination’s current ingest guidance.

Choose one combined file or a playlist

A single combined video file is the simplest first setup: picture and sound remain together, and FFmpeg loops that input. A playlist of several videos can add variety, but you need to check each transition, audio continuity, total playlist duration, and what happens if a file is missing or unreadable.

If you have separate video and audio files, plan synchronization and their independent loop lengths rather than assuming both will stay aligned. One community setup uses separate playlists but reports an audio-demuxer failure in that deployment; that is an implementation anecdote, not evidence of a general FFmpeg defect or a universal fix. See the community implementation notes.

Verify broadcast rights

Use fireplace footage and crackling audio that you own or are licensed to broadcast, and retain the relevant license records. Finding a file online does not establish that it is safe to rebroadcast; the copyright status of any particular asset must be checked separately.

Loop and publish the fireplace video

For a combined file, the loop option belongs before the input filename. The conceptual input pattern is -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/fireplace.mp4. The following is a command shape, not a universal platform preset: substitute the current ingest URL, a protected stream-key source, and codecs and encoding settings supported by both your FFmpeg build and the destination.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/fireplace.mp4
  -c:v <video-encoder> -c:a <audio-encoder>
  -f flv "<current-RTMP-ingest-URL>/<protected-stream-key>"

FFmpeg’s RTMP documentation describes publishing using FLV output, but it does not make the command’s endpoint or codec choices current for every platform. Before relying on this example, confirm the destination’s URL, stream-key procedure, accepted output format, codecs, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval in its current guidance. Do not copy a third-party command as if it were an approved preset.

Protect the stream key

Treat the stream key as a password. Do not put a real key in source control, a public repository, or a unit file that others can read. Project documentation for one community setup gives the same warning and uses a placeholder rather than a real key. If a key is exposed, rotate it using the platform’s current controls.

For a service, provide the credential through a protected mechanism appropriate to your host’s permissions, and make sure only the service account and authorized administrators can access it. Avoid printing the key in logs or shell histories.

Keep FFmpeg running with systemd

Run the long-lived command as a dedicated, unprivileged user. A systemd service can start it at boot and restart it after a failure; configure it to start after network readiness when that is appropriate for your host. Write useful logs to the journal so you can diagnose failures. The exact unit settings depend on your command, account, credential mechanism, and Ubuntu installation.

A service marked active only says that systemd sees a running process. It cannot confirm that the destination is receiving usable audio and video or that viewers can play them.

Troubleshoot common failures

FFmpeg exits immediately

Read the journal and run the command manually as the service account to expose errors that may be hidden by permissions or an incorrect working directory. Check that the media path exists, the service user can read the file and credential, the installed build includes the selected encoders, and the command syntax matches the installed FFmpeg version.

The service is active but the platform shows no usable stream

Check the current ingest URL and key, output format, and destination-specific encoding requirements. Then inspect FFmpeg’s journal output and the platform’s preview. Restarting a process does not correct an invalid key, incompatible output, or an unreachable ingest endpoint.

Video or audio stops, repeats poorly, or drifts

Test the source file’s playback and loop boundary. For separate media inputs, review synchronization and independent loop lengths; confirm that each file and playlist continues to be read. A multi-file design also needs checks for transition gaps and missing files.

FFmpeg repeatedly restarts

Use the journal to identify whether the underlying error is a missing file, encoder problem, credential access issue, or network failure. systemd can restart a failed process, but repeated restarts are not proof that the stream is healthy; check the destination preview as well.

DIY costs and trade-offs

The FFmpeg method uses your own Ubuntu host and network connection, which must remain available for the stream to continue. Encoding locally may use meaningful CPU resources; compatible stream-copying may reduce that work, but only when the source and destination requirements allow it. A single combined file is easier to loop and troubleshoot, while playlists make content updates and transitions more involved. The sources establish no universal uptime, audience, bitrate, or system-resource figure for this setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for service details, or start your free first day.
