You can loop a bhajan playlist into a YouTube Live stream with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, real-time input pacing, and an RTMPS stream key. The tracks must be compatible for stream copying—or normalized and re-encoded—and the computer and internet connection running FFmpeg must remain available. A looping command is not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service.
What you need before you start
- A computer or server that can stay on, with FFmpeg installed and access to the audio files.
- A reliable upload connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total bitrate; a connectivity disruption can break the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- A YouTube channel that can go live, plus the current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- Broadcast permission for both the composition and the particular recording. “Traditional,” devotional, or freely available online does not by itself establish that a recording is cleared.
This workflow is for prerecorded audio sent as a live stream, not a live microphone or camera broadcast. If YouTube’s current stream setup requires video, provide a continuous visual along with the audio; do not assume every destination accepts an audio-only input.
Prepare a concat manifest
Create a UTF-8 text file named bhajans.ffconcat. Put the format declaration on the first line, then list tracks in playback order:

file '/srv/media/bhajan-03.mp4'Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. Quote paths containing spaces or special characters correctly. Do not disable FFmpeg’s safe-path checks for a manifest you do not trust.

The concat demuxer joins files at the packet level and adjusts timestamps. FFmpeg requires the inputs to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases; inaccurate duration information can place later tracks incorrectly and cause artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Choose stream copy or re-encoding
Use stream copy only for compatible tracks
Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding, so it can reduce CPU use. It is appropriate only when the files expose matching streams and their codecs and container are accepted by the destination. If tracks differ, a command that assumes compatibility may fail or produce glitches.

Normalize mismatched files first
For a mixed library, make the tracks consistent in audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and container before building the playlist. This is a practical response to the demuxer’s matching-stream requirement, not a universally best preset. If you need to combine inputs while re-encoding, FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter rather than the concat demuxer: FFmpeg concat FAQ. Test the resulting playlist before using it for a public broadcast.
Send the playlist to YouTube Live
For a compatible playlist and an RTMP-family destination, this is an illustrative starting command. It encodes AAC audio and generates a basic still video:

-shortest -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"Replace the destination placeholder with the exact server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public logs, shared commands, and source control.
This is not a tested universal command. In particular, validate how -shortest interacts with the generated video on your installed FFmpeg build; it may stop output when the shorter input ends instead of sustaining a visual for the whole playlist loop. For a robust static visual, use a looping image or video input and a filter graph designed to keep video running indefinitely while audio loops. Test the actual command and output before scheduling a broadcast.

Use real-time pacing and suitable encoder settings
-re paces file input in real time, while -stream_loop -1 repeats the input list. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Its advanced guidance includes 44.1 kHz stereo audio and 128 kbps stereo audio. The example’s audio settings follow that audio guidance; choose video resolution and bitrate based on the stream setup and actual upload capacity, rather than assuming one bitrate suits every connection. Get the current YouTube destination details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the current server/ingest URL and stream key shown for that setup.
- Enter those values in your FFmpeg output destination and keep the key private.
- Confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream before sharing the event.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That note does not establish that one event can remain live indefinitely or that a 24-hour stream will be fully archived. The current maximum continuous event duration and archive behavior for a 24/7 event are not established here; check the current Live Control Room guidance for your channel rather than extrapolating from the under-12-hour note. When HLS is actually needed
RTMPS is the straightforward choice for this basic FFmpeg workflow. YouTube also documents HLS ingest for use cases that need it, but HLS requires HTTPS, TS segments, segments of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; YouTube describes it as higher latency than RTMP. It is not a drop-in replacement for the RTMPS command above. See YouTube HLS ingest requirements.

- Run the full playlist and output setup privately or in a controlled test before announcing the stream. Check audio levels, track transitions, the visual, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Confirm total streaming bitrate fits your upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Monitor FFmpeg’s process and output, as well as host load, disk availability, network status, and the destination’s live-health indicator.
- Plan how the process will restart after an application failure, and how you will learn about a host reboot or network outage. A restart policy and remote monitoring can reduce manual recovery, but cannot guarantee uptime.
FFmpeg documents an RTMP FIFO output pattern that attempts recovery after temporary output failures. Consult the current FFmpeg format documentation for the applicable options and validate them with your build. Output recovery cannot fix power loss, a reboot, disk failure, expired credentials, or a stream ended on YouTube’s side. A file loop makes playback repeat; it does not make the host or network immortal.
Troubleshooting concat and live-stream failures
