You can loop a rain video into a YouTube Live broadcast with FFmpeg by creating a YouTube stream in Live Control Room, then sending a paced, continuously looped file to YouTube’s ingest URL with its stream key. The command keeps playing only while FFmpeg, the host computer, and the network connection remain available; it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.
Before you start
- A rain video file that contains the intended picture and audio, or separate audio and video files you can combine.
- FFmpeg installed with the encoders and RTMPS protocol support you plan to use. Check the build with
ffmpeg -versionand available encoders withffmpeg -encoders. - A computer that can encode the chosen resolution and frame rate continuously, plus an upload connection that can sustain the output bitrate. Run an upload speed test and leave capacity for network variation.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live broadcast. YouTube’s current instructions and account requirements are in its encoder setup guide.
- Rain audio and visuals you created or are authorized to use. Check that the audio and image streams are present and that the loop point does not produce an abrupt sound or visibly jarring cut.
Make the source long enough that its repeated picture does not become distracting. This is a production choice, not a technical requirement. If audio and video come from different files, plan and test their loop lengths: one ending before the other or loops drifting out of sync can interrupt the intended presentation.
Create the YouTube Live broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room and configure the stream. The exact screens may vary with YouTube’s interface and channel setup.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Use the exact ingest URL YouTube supplies; do not guess or substitute an endpoint.
- Keep the stream key private. It authorizes publishing to your channel, so do not include a real key in a public script, screenshot, or support post. Store it securely and replace it in the example command below.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the preview and stream health information in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, use the control room’s go-live action when the preview is ready.
YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and video representative of the actual broadcast, then monitoring stream health while it runs. Its encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS where supported, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. It lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Check the current guidance for the resolution, frame rate, and codec combination you intend to send.
Run a looped rain video with FFmpeg
For a local MP4 containing both rain visuals and audio, use this as a starting template:

The destination must be the server URL and key from Live Control Room, combined in the format expected by that endpoint. Keep the actual key out of any script you share or publish. This is an illustrative command, not a tested recipe or a universal bitrate recommendation: the 4500 kbps video value is an example choice, not a YouTube-prescribed setting.
What the important options do
-rereads the input at its native frame rate, pacing a prerecorded file rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely while the FFmpeg process is running.-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264. The preset and tune in the example are encoding choices; test that your computer can sustain them at the selected resolution and frame rate.-b:vsets the target video bitrate.-maxrateand-bufsizeshape rate control; use a bitrate appropriate to YouTube’s current settings for your output and to your tested upload capacity.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP. It equals a two-second keyframe interval only at 30 frames per second. In general, set the GOP to about twice the chosen frame rate to match YouTube’s two-second recommendation.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at the example bitrate and sample rate. Confirm the result sounds right for your source and meets current ingest requirements.-f flvselects the FLV container commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS output.
FFmpeg documents -re and -stream_loop -1 in its command-line documentation. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its RTMPS ingestion documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS and uses a valid endpoint on port 443. Use the RTMPS URL supplied for your broadcast and confirm your FFmpeg build supports it.

Choose settings for your source and connection
There is no single bitrate in the example that suits every rain stream. Set output resolution and frame rate based on the source, your computer’s sustained encoding capacity, YouTube’s current codec-and-resolution guidance, and a real upload test. A high-quality setting is useful only if the encoder can maintain it and the connection can carry it reliably. CBR and the two-second keyframe interval are YouTube’s recommendations; verify stream health with representative content before relying on a long run.
If audio and video are separate
Assign the audio and video as separate FFmpeg inputs and arrange looping and pacing so both remain available for the whole output. Test the combined result: different source durations can create drift, abrupt transitions, or an input ending first. A practical alternative is to prepare one muxed file, check its loop point, then use the command template with that file. These options require testing with your actual media; they do not ensure seamless loops automatically.

Keep the broadcast running and recover from interruptions
The loop option repeats media; it does not restart a crashed FFmpeg process, repair an internet outage, or guarantee that YouTube will resume the same live session seamlessly. For unattended operation, use an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor configured to restart FFmpeg after failure. Monitor FFmpeg logs as well as Live Control Room stream health, and verify the preview and broadcast state after any restart. A restart may interrupt the stream.
YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive statement, not a stated maximum ingest duration and not a promise that a stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived automatically. If keeping a recording matters, plan a separate local recording or deliberately scheduled shorter broadcasts, and check YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive.

Copyright and monetization for an ambience stream
Use cleared rain recordings, music, images, and video. YouTube says copyright restrictions can affect an active live stream; its live-stream restrictions also cover advertising suitability and paid product placement requirements. If the stream includes sponsorship, follow the applicable disclosure rules.
Permission to use a recording and eligibility for YouTube monetization are different questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policies expect original, authentic content and flag generic, repetitive, mass-produced, or reused material. The reused-content review applies to a channel, and permission alone does not settle eligibility. Keep records of source provenance and licenses, and make the soundscape or presentation meaningfully identifiable as your own work. No particular rain stream or channel is guaranteed monetization approval.

Troubleshoot common failures
