To rotate videos on a YouTube Live stream from a low-cost VPS, use FFmpeg as the encoder and playlist player: it reads your media files in order, sends one continuous audio/video feed to YouTube over RTMPS, and starts again when the list ends. YouTube receives the feed; it does not rotate your files for you. The steps below cover the YouTube destination, playlist setup, encoding choices, VPS requirements, process supervision, and common failures.
How the playlist-to-live-stream setup works
You need three parts: media stored on the VPS, an FFmpeg process that plays and encodes that media, and a YouTube Live destination that accepts the incoming feed. In YouTube’s API model, a liveBroadcast is the viewer-facing event and a liveStream is the incoming encoder feed. A channel can reuse a stream resource for different events at different times; separate channels need separate stream resources. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
For a conventional FFmpeg feed, use the RTMPS ingestion address and stream key provided for the event or stream. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS; YouTube documents secure ingestion using port 443 and the endpoint details. Do not copy a sample key into a script or publish your real key. Confirm the channel can go live
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and retrieve its stream URL and key from the stream settings. Channel eligibility and setup requirements can vary; follow the status and prompts shown in Studio. Use the destination associated with that event, or a reusable stream resource if you manage the destination through the API.

Install FFmpeg and prepare media
Install FFmpeg from your VPS operating system’s package manager or a trusted build, then check that it is available with ffmpeg -version. Store the videos in a stable directory, such as /srv/youtube/media, and create a playlist file at /srv/youtube/playlist.txt. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer expects entries in a defined format; for example:

The FFmpeg concat demuxer works most reliably when files have compatible streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and time bases. The list itself does not make dissimilar files identical. Choose the output settings and bandwidth
Use a single, consistent output format for the live feed. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube detects the encoder settings and transcodes the feed into viewer output formats in the standard Live Control Room workflow.
The bitrate values below are YouTube-recommended encoder settings, not guaranteed minimum VPS network speeds. Choose a VPS route that can sustain the selected bitrate continuously, with room for network variation and audio. Figures were verified against YouTube Help in 2026; that is the verification date, not a stated publication date for the page.

For a 24/7 feed, the bitrate is sustained egress, not an occasional peak. Ask the VPS provider about monthly outbound-transfer caps, sustained network performance, and CPU capacity if you will re-encode. No current India VPS provider price or plan limit is established here, so compare those figures directly with providers rather than assuming a plan advertised as “low-cost” can handle your chosen output.
Build and test the FFmpeg rotation command
The following is a starting point for a playlist of compatible MP4 files, encoded as 720p30 H.264 with AAC audio. Replace YOUR_RTMPS_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY with the exact RTMPS destination and key shown for your stream. Treat the command as a template: FFmpeg options can vary with the installed build and source codecs, so test it with your actual files before relying on it.

This template re-encodes video, which costs CPU. If all files have compatible streams and you use stream copy to reduce CPU load, remove filters and encoding options only after confirming the assets’ codecs, resolution, frame rate, timestamps, and audio are suitable as one continuous output. Stream copy cannot resize, normalize frame rates, or fix incompatible media. FFmpeg’s documentation describes media options, but it does not certify this exact command for every build or source-file combination.
Test before scheduling a long run
- Run the command in a terminal session and check FFmpeg’s output for connection errors, missing streams, or decode warnings.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the event and wait for the incoming feed and stream-health status. Confirm both picture and sound, and watch the transition between at least two files.
- Play the stream as a viewer from another device or browser. Check that the video is not stretched or cropped unexpectedly, the audio is present and correctly paced, and the playlist advances.
- Test the VPS’s sustained outbound performance at the selected rate. YouTube advises testing with audio and motion similar to the real program, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
Keep FFmpeg running on the VPS
A terminal command is not a complete 24/7 operating plan: a disconnected session, process crash, server reboot, full disk, or lost network connection can stop it. Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd, configure restart behavior, and send standard output and error to logs you can inspect. The service should run as a restricted user with read access to the media and access to its secret key configuration. Avoid placing the key in a world-readable script or sharing logs that expose it.

For a robust deployment, keep the playlist and media in a persistent location, monitor free disk space, review logs for repeated reconnects or file decode errors, and arrange an alert if the service stops. A restart policy can restart the process after failure, but it does not prove uninterrupted streaming; verify recovery in YouTube Studio after any restart. If a playlist file changes while FFmpeg is running, do not assume the existing process reloads it automatically—restart or otherwise manage the process deliberately and check the resulting feed.
Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not receive the feed: check that the event is live or configured to accept the feed, the RTMPS address and stream key are copied exactly, and outbound connections on port 443 are allowed. Regenerate a leaked key and update the service securely.
- Stream health reports unstable bitrate or dropped frames: lower resolution or bitrate, check sustained VPS egress and transfer limits, and inspect CPU use. Re-encoding at a high resolution can saturate a small VPS even if its advertised network port is fast.
- FFmpeg stops at a file boundary: compare the playlist entries and file paths, permissions, codecs, stream layout, and timestamps. Normalize incompatible files to a common format, then test the full rotation rather than just the first clip.
- There is no audio or it cuts out: inspect whether every file has an audio stream and a compatible layout. The optional audio mapping allows video-only inputs, but it does not synthesize audio; normalize mixed inputs if transitions fail.
- The picture is distorted or has black bars: black bars are expected when preserving aspect ratio with the scale-and-pad filter. If the picture is stretched, verify the filter and output dimensions; choose a target resolution that matches the intended presentation.
- The feed does not restart after a reboot: check the supervisor’s service status and logs, file paths, permissions, environment or secret configuration, and network readiness. Confirm the service is enabled at boot and verify the recovered feed in Studio.
Copyright, reused media, and monetization
Technical ability to loop a file does not grant the right to broadcast it. YouTube’s live-streaming terms say the content provider must have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights, and comply with applicable laws. Obtain rights before streaming or archiving material. See YouTube Terms of Service.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and evaluates originality and authenticity at the channel level; reused-content review is distinct from copyright review. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” to clarify its treatment of repetitive or mass-produced material. That does not mean every looped playlist violates policy, but a technically valid stream is not a guarantee of monetization approval. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
